Shortly after a federal raid today brought down the file sharing service Megaupload, hackers aligned with the online collective Anonymous have shut down sites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group and the RIAA.
“It was in retaliation for Megaupload, as was the concurrent attack on Justice.org,” Anonymous operative Barrett Brown tells RT on Thursday afternoon.
Only hours before the DoJ and Universal sites went down, news broke that Megaupload, a massive file sharing site with a reported 50 million daily users, was taken down by federal agents. Four people linked to Megaupload were arrested in New Zealand and an international crackdown led agents to serving at least 20 search warrants across the globe.
Less than an hour after the DoJ and Universal sites came down, the website for the RIAA, or Recording Industry Association of America, went offline as well. With more than 1,600 members, the RIAA serves as a trade organization in the States for the industry and is the entity that declares gold- and platinum-selling records.
Universal Music Group, or UMG, is the largest record company in the United States and under its umbrella are the labels Interscope-Geffen-A&M, the Island Def Jam Motown Music Group and Mercury Records.
Brown adds that “more is coming” and Anonymous-aligned hacktivists are pursuing a joint effort with others to “damage campaign raising abilities of remaining Democrats who support SOPA.”
Although many members of Congress have just this week changed their stance on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, the raid on Megaupload Thursday proved that the feds don’t need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a blow to the Web.
Brown adds that operatives involved in the project will use an “experimental campaign” and search engine optimization techniques “whereby to forever saddle some of these congressmen with their record on this issue.”

This whole thing makes me so livid. The government shut down MegaUpload, one of the largest websites on the Internet that makes up 4% of the entire traffic of the Internet. This should be the biggest news story on the planet right now. The other issue is the US Government is arresting people in foreign countries without any evidence or due process. They just walk into a foreign country and grab these people and all their property, just like that. This is exactly why my avatar is what it is.

Popular file-sharing website megaupload.com gets shutdown by U.S Justice - FBI and charged its founder with violating piracy laws. Four Megaupload members were also arrested. The FBI released a press release on its website which you can view here:

We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn't think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us.

The bad thing is that most of the sites that Anonymous shut down are back up, while Megaupload is gone and the poeple arrested will have their lives ruined.

I'm pretty sure Anonymous are the NSA or some other Agency. They seem to show up at the wrong time for the wrong reason, doing something outlandish that serves TPTB - like the Iowa Republican Party moving the vote-counting to a secret location because Anonymous threatened to "hack" the voting.

Yep.
Plus the method they are using to take down these sites are simple DDOS attacks which are short lived by nature.
Real hackers take down sites by actually cracking their security. Those kinds of breaches are much more serious and have lasting effects.
What I wonder is why they have never publicized (anonymous) methods to attacking/hacking into the backends of these sites. That style attack is much more sophisticated and has many deeper ramifications other than the temporary cosmetic attack via DDOS.

This is why piratebay and the like are hosted in countries that don't honor international warrants with clustered backups waiting in other countries for when they do go down.

I have to agree with other posters that Anonymous is a controlled group, though having been involved with various Anonymous efforts such as those directed against Scientology I do believe the majority of the Anon Collective are good, honest people.
Attacks like these against U.S government infrastructure really don't achieve much except giving the government the excuse to crack down.
Meanwhile going on any Anon-affiliated site and attempting to discuss how the U.S government and private interests are conspiring in subversion of the American people's interests for their own agendas is dismissed by the "agents" within the Collective as crazy conspiracy theories with no basis in fact(and when a topic outlining in great detail over 200 years of progressive subversion is posted the agents spam up the boards to bury it on the 7th page in under an hour, then delete it and it's poster).
But it's not crazy when the Anonymous Collective says the Iranian government is conspiring with the Mullah's and such to subvert the Iranian people's interests for their own agendas. Or in Syria, or Libya, or Iraq, etc.
Any government that the U.S and it's accomplices are opposed to is guilty of evil conspiracies against their own people and need to be deposed but the U.S government(or British, Canadian, etc.) doing much of the same things is innocent of any such conspiracy charges.
It's just the natural progression of authoritarian power in our case, not conspiracy. *wink wink*
I see the Anon Collective like the group in a book called Black Friday(a number of such named books but sadly I can't recall the author) that tells of a group of misguided youth being set-up by secret government forces to shut down a mall(I believe) in protest of capitalism by using electronic jamming devices in their backpacks.
And then the "jamming devices" the secret forces provided them explode and produce a nice false-flag attack similar to how the 7/7 attacks went down with clueless patsies taking the fall.
I don't think Anon will be bombing anyone or anything at all, but they are the cyber equivalent of misguided youths(mostly) being led into working against what they actually want to achieve with false-flag cyber-attacks that will end up removing all freedoms of the internet.

why couldn't they just un-plug the CAT-5E cable ? the thing that hooks you up to the switch/router and/or modem, whether you're using DSL or Coax or whatever.
or un-plug the wireless adapter if it's wireless ...

Hackers claiming an affiliation with Anonymous took credit for crashing the Central Intelligence Agency’s Web site Friday, in what appears to be another distributed denial-of-service attack.
The CIA’s Web site was inaccessible around 3:30 on Friday afternoon. The CIA did not immediately respond to a request for comment as to whether the Web site was down because of unusual activity.
Much like the response to SOPA in the United States, online activists in Europe have been able to generate vigorous pushback.
The hacking collective has targeted several government sites in recent weeks, including the Web site for the Department of Justice and an announced attack on the White House’s Web site.
Previous attacks were said to be in retaliation for online piracy legislation; it was not immediately apparent why Anonymous chose to target the CIA Friday, though members of the group have been central in planning a day of protest against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), an online piracy agreement signed by several European officials.
Legal scholars have said the treaty has implications for the United States, as well. The Obama administration has already agreed to ACTA through an executive agreement, an act that Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) challenged in October. Wyden said that ACTA is a treaty that has implications for U.S. intellectual property law and should have been ratified by the House and Senate. For its part, the Obama administration has said that it does not believe ACTA’s implementation would have any effect on U.S. law.
