I'm leaning the Gulf in general is still not safe to visit...

Your thoughts?

(also testing to see if the 'mystery' icon this thread banner has (pawn shop/auto tranny/whatever) disolves w/ a new post or not)

No, the new icon hasn't gone away yet; nor is this "new" topic even shown.

I'm glad you found this thread in the dungeons of dungeons zap!

The kids have never seen the ocean yet, and we have cheap access to lodging in S. Texas. I won't put them through TSA to fly there, but driving might be do-able. My concen is if the gulf would be safe for a day visit or not... digging in the sand, going in the water, etc.

Oh No !!!!!!! they have never seen the ocean? Then you gots to go !!! I really don't know about the sand or water, I am not sure there are chemicals in it, Maybe you should put this on general discussion, cause I believe we have some folks down that way who could shed more light onto the subject for you.

yeah - Wear water shoes.

The water is pretty clear down there, has a nice green hue to it.
As far as safety goes, I have wade fished about 100miles north of there several times since the spill. The fish have always been strong and healthy - and the fishing was great.

I ate them. I remain healthy.

I do it because the current runs North - up the TX coast, East across LA, MS, AL to FL, carrying the nasties away from my fishing grounds.

If I started reading reports of sick wildlife in my area, I would quit eating them - And by reports, I mean Locals and fishing Forums - Not MSM.

South Padre Island is not really America. It's no place for gringos.

I used to live in Corpus Christi, and visited Padre Island many times (I used to go metal detecting on Big Shell beach). The way the current of the gulf goes, all the oil was moving in the opposite direction of the Texas coast. I wouldn't want to live there, but a visit should be harmless. This time of year the weather should be quite comfortable.

Am actually thinking more around Easter time, which is April 8 this year. Or will it be overrun w/ "Spring Break" youth?

I don't know exactly when spring break is, but if you go during spring break it's a good bet it will be overrun.

Spring Break for us down here is the week of 3/11, which seems kinda early. So I would guess that SB here will basically encompass March from a tourist season standpoint here in TX.

I get along with Texans of Mexican heritage just fine.

Our spring break is Mar. 25-31, so it appears to miss most of the college breaks. We wouldn't be staying on the island, just there for the day(s) I think. Still checking into options.
