View Full Version : Where to move?

Or where not to move? As things are it looks like the last legal representative really messed things up and we won't have enough time to stay put before the lawsuits settle.
So in talking with my family we were condomplating a move and looking local... It will take the same effort to move across the street as it would to travel cross country just more time and a few silver coins.
We all agree we don't want to live in a subdivision or close to a big city. I like rolling acres and trees and so does my son. My wife could care less as long as we are all together (try to get that in the US). I have no family besides these 2 and would miss nothing from the area, neither would they.
I have no clue why but currently the monitors are surfing along the Mississippi River which means nothing at the moment. I have had no time to even look at a map let alone do research on the subject so I figured I would listen to any and all input from here.
Issues: Need electricity, don't like the cold much, like privacy and don't want to make brownies with the neighbors, I just want to be the asshole next door. Prefer acres for hunting and whatever. Don't care much for laws cops or taxes. Have my own business so dont want to be taxed to death on it but will need access to USPS or fedex or whatever.
Hopefully this doesnt go to the 3rd page before I can get back lol.
TIA.

One thing about rural life you need to learn before you move is that your relationship with your neighbors is important and will become more so WTSHTF. Be an asshole in the city...get it out of your system.
A high percentage of rural people live there because they don't want to be around people and they like their privacy. Respect their privacy but when invited to neighborhood get-togethers, come and be friendly. In the city a bad reputation means little, don't try this in the country.
I think you need to define how much heat and how much cold is important to you. If you think you can get along with Mexicans after TSHTF, the Southwest might be OK, otherwise the Northwest. If you're really poor, Missouri is a good place to buy a farmstead cheap.

Question Cebu....where would you like to move to? Climate wise. I'm taking it for granted that ya want to live in the country. I might suggest N Fl panhandle, S Alabama.

People are so tied up with reality they only investigate the WHERE (in moving).
Just as important is the WHEN (as in what time frame you intend to move into).
NOW is just the concept of space/time under the appearance of reality. Reality is subjective and relative. Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one (saying credited to Einstein).
Control time and place becomes less important.

Pick a state in the top ten and research accordingly
Below are listed the States from most to least free according to your current weights. Shown above is a map representing theranking by color: States change from blue to green to yellow as their ranking increases (they become "more free").

He lives in a place (Oregon) where I think he said 60% of the people are on food stamps. Wouldn't want to move there IMO.

I feel really stupid asking this, but it's not going to stop me . . . how do use the sliders? It says "Use the sliders to adjust the weighting of various categories of policies." So, sliding it to the right means that the subject is important to me?

I'm not quite sure myself. I think that if you move it right, it means more of that certain thing, spending, gun control, etc.
"Use the sliders to adjust the weighting of various categories of policies. Categories with a "+" next to them can be expanded to adjust the relative weighting of individual factors within the category."
Idk I just looked at it how it was. Then messed around not knowing wtf I was doing.

Whew, thanks for relieving me from feeling stupid. To me, "weighting" could be the amount of weight that I put on that issue (that's how the term is used in statistics). Or it could be the amount of regulations in that issue. They would have the opposite effect. Still confused. :(

OK, I just moved all of the sliders to 0, and then put gun control up to the highest (25). Alaska is listed as the most "free". Then I used only "Marriage & Civil Union Laws", and Vermont and California are listed as the most free.
So, I say that that "weighting" is for what you value most.

They have another one (http://freedom.robocourt.com/goldwater/) which seems awfully similar in content to the first one:
"The map visually represents the ranking of states according to their constitutional commitment to limited government. "
There is a better explanation on how to use the sliders:
"This online tool allows you to adjust the weighting of each assessment category and subcategory to correspond to your preferences. Moving a slider bar to the right will increase that category's relative weight; moving it to the left will decrease that category's relative weight. "

Yeah, this is what I did. Some of the categories are more cryptic. Like "Spending". What does that mean? I moved everything to zero except Spending, and it listed Wyoming first and Alaska last. The details are in the link, I suppose. It would be nice to have a one-sentence clarification for each.
Fun chart, though. I tried to adjust the sliders (either 0 or 25) to get my state as high as possible; I got it to rank 4th.

If you rate everything exactly in the middle (12.5), you get:
1. Colorado
2. Michigan
3. Virginia
4. Idaho
5. Texas
.
46. Washington
47. New Jersey
48. Rhode Island
49. Maryland
50. New York
Keep in mind that this is just about "freedom". For instance, if you care about Education, the rating is for freedom of education, not how good the educational system is in that state.

where do you want to be when everything we take for granted, late 20th century "safe" civilization, disintegrates ?
for me part of the answer was - i need a public swimming pool within 5 miles. for health reasons - helps me control stress, helps me THINK, helps me figure out how to adapt.
i also think part of the answer needs to be - you need a GOOD coin dealer nearby. some guy or gal that shares Patriot views, that is ready for Collapse.
of course, there's a lot of other parameters -
* how close to family & friends
* the water situation - how reliable is it ? i looked in the Baker City Oregon area. one place was very entertaining. about 5 acres, basically in the desert, with a well that put out .9 gallons per minute. and 2 of my neighbors were deeply engrossed in "water wars" - my preferred potential neighbor's wife had reported another neighbor for hunting on the ranch she managed ... that neighbor responded by being a total asshole about water, removing the neighbor's pump from the irrigation ditch. the good neighbor & his wife would have been good neighbors, but the water situation was a disaster.
etc. etc.
i think that it helps a lot to "talk to the neighbors" - including the mailman & the police (sometimes they will tell you about crime reports for specific addresses.)
