(Reuters) - Anti-government extremists opposed to taxes and regulations pose a growing threat to local law enforcement officers in the United States, the FBI warned on Monday.
These extremists, sometimes known as "sovereign citizens," believe they can live outside any type of government authority, FBI agents said at a news conference.
The extremists may refuse to pay taxes, defy government environmental regulations and believe the United States went bankrupt by going off the gold standard.
Routine encounters with police can turn violent "at the drop of a hat," said Stuart McArthur, deputy assistant director in the FBI's counterterrorism division.
"We thought it was important to increase the visibility of the threat with state and local law enforcement," he said.
In May 2010, two West Memphis, Arkansas, police officers were shot and killed in an argument that developed after they pulled over a "sovereign citizen" in traffic.
Last year, an extremist in Texas opened fire on a police officer during a traffic stop. The officer was not hit.
Legal convictions of such extremists, mostly for white-collar crimes such as fraud, have increased from 10 in 2009 to 18 each in 2010 and 2011, FBI agents said.
"We are being inundated right now with requests for training from state and local law enforcement on sovereign-related matters," said Casey Carty, an FBI supervisory special agent.
FBI agents said they do not have a tally of people who consider themselves "sovereign citizens."
J.J. MacNab, a former tax and insurance expert who is an analyst covering the sovereign movement, has estimated that it has about 100,000 members.
Sovereign members often express particular outrage at tax collection, putting Internal Revenue Service employees at risk.

LOL I don't know if it's irony or just plain stupidity that "journalist" keep using that oxymoron. You're not a citizen if you're sovereign.

I think they know exactly what they are saying.
A person may recognize himself as sovereign. Its the state that claims them as a citizen (slave)-
Not that this is academically correct- But I believe this is the perception of those in the system.

I don't doubt that they are compiling their lists, but I think this is more of a psyop for the sheep.
The sheep need more fear enducing headlines to keep them scared, to keep them compliant. I don't think Syria and Iran have enough punch at the current moment to keep the sheep's attention.

Is there any proof that any of us are on any government lists of terrorists or extremists? Has anybody been 'rounded up' or officially accused of being an enemy of the state? Have any of us disappeared lately?
Are we just playing with paranoia here?
I'm pretty sure that if you have any leadership abilities, and you are a typical GS-US person they might be watching you. Otherwise, they'll need some snitch to turn you in. Even the lunatics that run this asylum need to prioritize their threats so they can use their unlimited resources effectively. It's not illegal yet to express your opinions. If they don't like your opinions, they won't use the NDAA just yet to disappear you. They will target you and harass you, or frame you for something you didn't do.
Until I hear something like that happening to any of us, for me, it's business as usual.

You MUST be an extremist to be an American Patriot. The American Patriot is on the endangered species list, along with all State Nationals. They have been systematically hunted down and slaughtered in the past 40 years, ala Gordon Kahl.
There is a small portion of me that just cant wait for this thing to pop off.

The following collection of 25 flyers produced by the FBI and the Department of Justice are distributed to local businesses in a variety of industries to promote suspicious activity reporting. The flyers are not released publicly, though several have been published in the past by news media and various law enforcement agencies around the country. We have compiled this collection from a number of online sources.
To view the documents, click on a threat area in the menu to the left and the PDF will appear on the right side of the page. You can also download the complete collection of files (http://info.publicintelligence.net/FBI-SuspiciousActivity.zip) (ZIP Archive, 6.27 MB).

I am reaching the point where I don't really care how they label me. I suspect there is not much time left in this world and I don't mind being called a christian fanatic, a patriot, a prepper, or any other ACCURATE description. What I do find unkind is lying to give a false representation of one... essentially, character assassination to justify the physical assassination.
I believe as strongly as I know that day follows night, that there is One true God and His only-begotten Son is soon to return to this world in a much different form than when He left. When He does come back, mercy will be complete and all that will be left for the real terrorists is wrath. I can lose what is temporary here in this world and be secure in what is eternal. I don't even need to fight. All I need do is stand firm. The power of God will be making a mockery of the evil ones even in these dark days.
