an iowan and a south dakotan were hunting when an indian runs across the field and the south dakotan shoots him in the back and kills him. "you can't do that!" cried the iowan. "no, no, it's legal here in sd" replies the south dakotan.

later that night, the iowan goes and buys some beer and puts it on the roof of his truck to open the door. just then an indian runs by, grabs the beer, and runs away. the iowan thinks "no problem" and he shoots him in the back and kills him. as he is getting his beer the police come and arrest him. "but I thought it was legal to shoot indians here in south dakota!" protests the iowan.

"well yeah," says the cop, "but you can't use bait."

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An American Indian tribe is suing some of the world’s largest beer makers, claiming they knowingly contributed to alcohol-related problems on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota filed a federal lawsuit Thursday demanding $500 million from five international beer manufacturers for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation.

The lawsuit also targets four off-site beer stores in Whiteclay, a Nebraska town with a population of about a dozen people on the South Dakota border that sells nearly 5 million cans of beer annually.

The Connecticut-sized reservation has struggled with alcoholism and poverty for generations, despite an alcohol ban since 1832. Pine Ridge legalized alcohol in 1970, but restored the ban two months later.

There are about 40,000 people in that reservation. Assume 50% drink. That's 1 case/carton (24) of beer each per month.

Sounds like a border post is required if it's smugglers. I wonder what the margin is.

i used to live right near there. 1 case will last one of them about a day and a half, tops. it's alcoholism as you've never seen. it's also the capitol of paint huffing.

There is a problem but I don't know the solution. I've wondered about it for years.

That alcohol ban is really working fine. Maybe time to try a different approach, instead of blaming the brewers and the shop keepers outside the reservation? I don't think there is an easy or quick solution to the problem of alcoholism among Indians (or any other indigenous population who have a genetic propensity towards uncontrolled alcoholism), but you have to start treating them like adults, part of being an adult means you have a choice, and you face the consequences of your choice...

180 years of prohibition hasn't done anything good to the Indians!

In Western Montana lots of Whites live on the reservations. The Blackfoot reservation is an awesome piece of real estate with a huge lake. Most of the Indians are intermarried with Whites. The feds spend TONS and TONS of money on these reservations trying to uplift the Indians. Alcoholism is a problem here, too.
