Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul speaks to supporters in downtown Vancouver, Wash. Thursday. VANCOUVER, Wash. – Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul told his supporters Thursday that the country is bankrupt and warned it is over-extending itself overseas.

"We just can't continue this spending. We have to quit the spending," he said.

Paul made his comments before a packed room inside the Hilton Hotel downtown; in fact, the fire marshal had to turn away several hundred people.

While Paul said that what's going on in Washington, D.C. is "depressing" people, especially young people, are beginning to get involved to turn things around.

He also warned that despite the lessons of history, the United States continues to expand its power and influence in other countries for unjustifiable reasons. Additionally, the country can't afford it.

“I think the American people are waking up and saying, ‘Why are we wasting our resources, our financial resources, our lives, our young people overseas, doing things that don’t serve our interests?'”

The Texas congressman has a strong political base in Southwest Washington. In 2008, his delegates dominated the Clark County Republican convention. After his visit in Vancouver, Paul will go to Seattle where he will also hold a rally.

On Friday, he will be in Eastern Washington.
