Seems odd (not really) that Laguna Beach motorcycle traffic officers are now packing what look to be AR type rifles... I couldn't get a good look at it as I wasn't in the best position and know better than to get nosey and possibly set one of these thugs off. Looks like either an AR or HK to me... anyone else know for sure? Speculation about the reason why motorcycle traffic cops in liberal art communities are armed thusly is also welcome...

i think it has something to do with dealing with the "Riff-Raff" - street crime, Occupy Wall Street protesters, etc.

those guns are not for dealing with White Collar Criminals, like doctors who falsify clinical trial results or bankers who falsify bank documents.

just for kicks i looked at their website -

http://www.lagunabeachcity.net/cityhall/police/default.asp

"Lateral Officer Openings
Top step officers earn $84,084 and can earn up to 7.5% additional pay for a total of $90,600! One third of officers are corporals topping at $94,954. A bachelors is 5% or an AA is 2.5%. With a degree and exceptional performance pay, corporals earn up to $102,230! Apply Online for Laguna Beach Job Openings Contact the Department Personnel Officer, Jim Cota, at 949 497-0374 for more information."

look at those smiling LBPD'ers !

I can't think of a place I've been where one would be less likely to find "riff-raff" (other than the occasional homeless person), street crime, or an OWS protester...

They must be expecting trouble, unlikely as that seems in Laguna.

There's a rifle holder blocking most of the view of the rifle, but it does have an EOTech optic on it. Surely it's a mouse caliber/poodle shooter, so it could be anything like an H&K, FN SCAR, or an M4, etc.

Should have gotten closer for your photo, and if they hassled you simply say something like, "I'm a tax payer and I'm very interested in how your dept. is spending MY money. Got an issue with that??"

Was it locked to the bike? Looks unattended and if it was just in a scabbard would be an easy mark.

It was definitely in a locked rifle holder just like shotguns are locked up in patrol cars, you can count on that. The shotgun holders have a lock on them that protrudes out like a big button when unlocked so in order to lock it all they need to do is slap that lock button down. There's another smaller button that is much less obtrusive which actually releases the clamp holding the shotgun in place, which will only release if the large lock button is protruding out. When I did ridealongs the cops I rode with would give me a keyring with keys to both the car and the shotgun, and in the event they needed me to back them up I had ready access to the shotgun.

Please elaborate. My gf loves hers, although her first choice is an ACOG.

Considering the location, I would say it's an AR variant. At first I thought it was a Sig 550 variant though.

the one i have has no magnification. so it's basically useless if you're shooting at long range targets. i guess i should buy one of the magnification things they sell for it, but damn, that's another $300 or so. i wish i would have researched it more before i bought it, it seems designed for close combat/less than 75-50 yard engagements. it's like an iron sight past 100 yards. i mean, i can hit targets with it at farther than that, but not do small patterning. ah well, it's the dog gun anyway, i have the ak for real defense.

It wasn't unattended. Just to the right out of frame he was talking to the person he pulled over...
