;D

So, I went on a little shopping trip to Amish land today. Went to quite a few different stores and shops. Horses and buggies everywhere. The roads were well fertilized.

Really weird walking around with gas lights running in the places. They are only about 4" from head height in some of them. You could feel the warmth. If the gas lights were not running, the only other light was natural except at the butchers in the meat area. This was at the Amish owned stores only.

Found quite a few different selections at the bulk food store.

Sweet Cream Buttermilk Powder. 3.71 lbs for $11.09
Sea Salt 6.25 lbs for $4.31. (I didn't check for any larger bags)
Black Peppercorns Whole 1.33 lb for $9.11 (About a quart)
Chili Powder 1.25 lb for $4.86 (About a quart) (I didn't grow enough mild red peppers and paprika myself this year, needed more)

Picked up some wheat to grind as a sample.

Hard Red Spring Wheat 4.11 lbs for $3.25
Soft White Wheat 3.37 lbs for $3.34
50 lb bags were cheaper per pound.

I bet you could buy bulk through this store. I didn't inquire about it today. Bulk of just about everything. Homemade pasta, all kinds of flavored jello in multiple flavors and sizes, oats, wheat, sugar, salt, brown sugar, pepper, herbs, medicinal herbs, spices. Very good selection.

At another store, I found some some Sovereign Silver 4 fl oz for $14.60. This stuff is $18.71 at this site. http://www.allhealthtrends.com/Sovereign-Silver-4oz.html. I was amazed to see it in a store. Granted this was a health food store.

Went to the boot shop. I may take a pair back down the next time to get fixed.
Prices seemed reasonable for a Red Wing brand store.

Hit the hardware store, picked up some food grade buckets for 3 bucks each. Lids were 2 bucks. I did find a duel fuel coleman lantern for 54 bucks. That seemed dirt cheap. I didn't buy it. I already had one.

Almost every store sold jars and lids. All the lids were non bpa lids. No white stuff. 12 bucks for 6 dozen were the cheapest I saw for wide mouths. No tattler lids that I could find.

Pretty cool day all in all. I will probably go back and hit the bulk store again. Some good stuff there.

I forgot to add...

They also sold coconut oil at the bulk food store place. In different multiple sizes. From a cup portion to 5 gallons.

I picked up 1.91 lb for $6.47. (About a quart). It's in one the 2 lb containers you get at the grocery store deli, plastic.

I didn't check out the brand, but they had a 5 gallon jug of coconut oil. This had to be liquid though, because it had a spout. It was 75 bucks.

I picked some up because of reading this thread. http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?37595-Get-your-Coconut-Oil-here...&highlight=coconut

Now, what do I do with this damned oil?

I usually have 2x tablespoons of warmed [just so I can drink it] coconut oil a day to ensure I have enough saturated fat for the day.

Hutterites where I'm at are conscientious objectors. I think some of them hunt. I'll ask one next time I bump into one.... I used to know a few of them a few years back...

Dont be fooled by the Amish "way of life."

They dress that way for The tourists

Most have full blown houses with all the everyday gadgets it just cant be attached to their "modest" home.

The Amish are well know for running Puppy mills for Pet shops and Direct internet sales.

You take 1 heaping tablespoon in your mouth every morning. Stand there and swish it around for a good 15 minutes and then go out and spit it on the lawn. It pulls toxins out of the blood.

I had a discussion with a FFL dealer a year or two ago. I don't remember the exact time frame of the story. Years ago at a minimum maybe even a decade or more ago. This FFL was the dealer for a large amount of weapons and ammo sold to some Amish. I don't remember if it was Indiana or Illinois Amish either. Anyway, they mad one giant community order. Once the price was agreed upon, they peeled off the FRN's (10 thousand or more) and the young ones started hauling out to the truck. The truck more than likely belonged to a relative that left the lifestyle/church and was just helping on the transporting end.

I have never heard of the Hutterites. Around here it is the Amish or the Mennonites.

I don't think hitching wagons and buggies or riding around on bicycles, would be a great enough incentive for pulling one on the tourists.
Not saying there are not some shenanigans occurring, but if you get off the beaten path out where they farm, they are living the lifestyle.
I don't see any need of hitching up four Belgians to a manure spreader when a tractor could be used for the operation. I should add cabless seat on a mid 30 degree day with a stiff breeze blowing. Once again, I don't see any incentive on this. Also, don't see any reason why one would dry their clothes outside on this particular day either if another means was available. Most of the Amish at one of the country stores we stopped at rode their in a vehicle. I didn't pay much attention to how many were driving the vehicles. Their businesses can run electricity. The electrical is not hooked up in the house.

There are some weird things. Some can talk on/use cell phones, but it is only for business not social. No phones in the houses and no calls on Sunday.

I worked a job once with some Amish construction workers. They had the hats, beards, home made clothes and all. The funny thing was that they all smoked (just this group) menthol cigarettes.

I use cocunut oil in a pan when cooking eggs and to sauté veggies. Not sure what heating it up is doing to though. I tried to use it on meat once but if not heated up right away it turns solid and looked really gross.... Tasted fine though.

Went back down to Amish land this morning. 80 deg @ 6:00 meant no working outside today for me. 100 deg at this moment.

Picked up a 50lb bag of Hard Red Winter Wheat @ 26.75 and a 50lb bag of Soft White Wheat for 36.25. Much cheaper than Honyeville. http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/wholegrains.aspx I got everything into buckets with mylar bags. I have yet to seal them up. I have Oxy absorbers. Any other recommendations for the wheat storage?

I also picked up some Prairie Gold 86 Kernel wheat as a sampler. 2 lbs @ .99/lb. I didn't see this in a 50lb bag.
I picked up some other odds and ends (bulk pudding, lemonade, jello, sea salt, pepper corns, chili powder). I didn't get any pastries. Too damned hot to transport.

Swung by the boot shop. They said that my pair of boots was too far gone to fix. At least they were honest. Ended up buying a new pair from them. I'll take a trip down there in a few weeks to pick them up and do a little more shopping.

I swung by a different meat shop on the way home. I was surprised to see that they accepted the Link Card. (Illinois's version of public aid). I don't remember if the bulk food place took the link card. I will look for the sign the next time I am there.

Bulk food place was busy. Mostly non-Amish customers.

Still they are making a killing on that wheat osoab but unless you know a local farmer with some in a bin it's the only game in town.

Wheat closed yesterday floor price of $821.75 for a 60 pound bushel.

Well, the wheat has been cleaned too. That is worth some extra. I will say that the bags were clean from debris. Just a bit a chaff in the HRWW and I don't remember seeing any in the SWW.

I know I could go get some from a farmer or even from a grain elevator for that matter. I am, however, putting some faith into the quality of grain for human consumption rather that straight wheat out of the field with who knows what sprayed on it.

Still worth it imo. Cash n Carry.

I cook chicken with coconut oil, and I sautee/grill veggies with it sometimes too. I use it on my skin, particularly on my legs after shaving, and I also use it to season my cast iron pots/skillets. It has a high burn/smoke temperature, making it perfect for seasoning the cast iron.

makes dynamite cinnamon toast,
love it brushed onto pancakes and french toast
frosting from scratch
even dared myself and created a 3 layer chocolate birthday cake from scratch a few weeks back. (Surprised Helen and me both.) LOL

Yes, I was showing off for her. Hadn't baked a scratch cake in 45 years personally. Talk about moist and tasty! We like cake around here, and all her rav fav German Choc pre-fukushima cake mixes were consumed after 15 months.

I would caution against the WalMart c.oil. It's solvent extracted. Good C.oil is not. Pay a bit more for it, but be sure and read the label...you want non-solvent extracted and organic.

move the decimal 2 places to the left. Grains are still priced in pennies.

What part of an Amish does the ribeye come from?
