This is the stuff they'll feed your kid after dismissing your turkey sandwich and apple slices as nonconforming to their guidelines.

USDA school lunch meat contains "pink slime" (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-57393719-10391704/report-usda-school-lunch-meat-contains-pink-slime/)

(CBS News) McDonald's and other fast food chains may have gotten rid of "pink slime" from its burgers, but the gooey sounding chemical treatment that removes bacteria from meat is popping up elsewhere: Kids' school lunches.

The Daily reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to buy 7 million pounds of "Lean Beef Trimmings," what many dub pink slime, from Beef Products International (BPI) for the nation's school lunch programs. Though the USDA said in a statement that all meat "meet(s) the highest standard for food safety," many have decried the use of the beef item, including celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

"The USDA-AMS [Agricultural Marketing Service] does allow for the inclusion of BPI Boneless Lean Beef in the ground beef they procure for all their federal food programs and, according to federal labeling requirements, it is not a raw material that is uniquely labeled," Amy Bell, spokeswoman for the California Department of Education Food Distribution Program, told The Daily in an email.

The USDA says that no more than 15 percent of each serving will consist of pink slime, MSNBC reported. Bell noted it is hard to tell from a finished product if the processed meat byproduct is included, making it hard for parents, students and consumers to discern for themselves.

The USDA could not be reached for comment by HealthPop.

Not many people are happy with this news, including microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein. He is widely credited for coming up with the term "pink slime" to describe the ammonia hydroxide-doused meat products salvaged from the scraps of slaughterhouses.

"I have a 2-year-old son," microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein told The Daily. "And you better believe I don't want him eating pink slime when he starts going to school."

"They've taken a processed product, without labeling it, and added it to raw ground beef," Zirnstein said.More at link above...

It's also contained in most ground beef at the store. Buy your food directly from the farmer if at all possible.

I am lucky to live in Turkey. I buy my ground beef from the local butcher, and he grinds it fresh in front of me using cubes of meat. It is a little more expensive than the prepacked stuff sold at the supermarkets, but I know what I am getting. I'll spend at least $50/week at the butcher shop! Money well spent!

My mother-in-law was telling me about pink slime last night....Boy am I glad we raise our own beef! I've also noticed a taste difference between our own hamburger vs store-bought or in some (Italian) restaurants.

Welcome to the forum sugar plum! Why would you order a hamburger at an Italian restaurant?

This is the article that I first read about the stuff back in 2009.

This is the sole reason that I quit eating all fast food with the exception of Subway on occasions. Haven't stepped foot in one since. I won't even go into them to use the bath room. Too many mouth breathers in those places.

Just a side note

The amonia in slaughter houses comes from the animals losing control of their bladders..... this piss is scraped up off the floor with meat trimmings and sold as consumable meat.

after the rabbi blesses it of course

I won't deny that there isn't ammonia coming from the crap, but they are injecting ammonia into the slime to keep bacteria from growing.

From my understanding, there is a fine line from killing bacteria to making people sick.

They dont want to kill the bacteria............

They want to make as many people sick as possible so they can get them on "Meds' to treat their maladies

Thank you! I guess I wasn't as clear as I thought...When I said Italian, I was thinking of their meat sauces. Basically, all the cheaper restaurants and stores in my parents' town seem to sell poor tasting (probably poor quality) beef.

i've been feeding boiled cow lung to my chickens. they like it, but you have to cut it up into small pieces.

it's nice & pink, the cow wasn't a smoker ;)

but i wouldn't feed it to school-kids.

Maybe we should make hamburger out of the top tier management of the USDA and feed them to the chickens.

i got a pretty good idea of what pink slime could be when i butchered that cow a few weeks ago.

i saved the lungs, liver, and kidneys for the chickens. the lung is definitely pink in color.

and then there's the parts that i chose to not butcher. like the head ... and some parts i'd rather not mention unless you guys ask for the gory details.

i wonder if the pink slime is the parts that were not fit for a hot dog ?

Thanks Andrea. I am proud to say that my children think McDonalds is gross, and not fit for animal consumption.

When I eat a menu at McD (exceedingly rare, maybe once a year), I usually get a very bloated feeling, and mild discomfort in the liver area that lasts for an hour or two, and then I am hungry again...
