The new epidemic of cavities in children

My son just told me that his mothers husband told him that the epidemic of kids getting cavities is due to bottled water. They are not getting enough fluoride and should be drinking city water instead. I guess this ass clown heard this on a radio news report and believes it. Sheeple deluxxe. I have not looked for this type of news yet as I just got off the phone but will see if I can find anything.

I went to the dentist last month, after the cleaning and what not is done. The technician ask what flavor of Fluoride I will be using. I said none, I avoid Fluoride as it has no benefit of human health. She looks at me and says it makes your teeth stronger. I said ok, how about this. We'll wait and see what the doctor says, if he thinks my teeth are hard or soft. She said "okay". Doc comes in takes a look, pokes and prods around with his dental tools makes a comment "most of my patients would do anything to have teeth this hard." I looked over at the technician, and said. No Fluoride for me.

I am skeptical that bottled water is the reason for the cavity "epidemic." Besides, isn't it debatable that fluoride actually prevents cavities. I haven't personally reviewed the literature. Before I invoke fluoride, dubious as it is, I would venture that this cavity increase reflects:

1. poor diet
2. low quality foods from depleted soils
3. crappy starchy and sugary foods and drinks
4. poor dental hygiene

Fluoride is a mineral?

The kind that's in rocks and minerals is calcium fluoride, but what's added to municipal water supplies is industrial-grade silicofluorides (SiFs) or fluorosilicic acid. The CDC claims that the fluoride ions are the same in both of them (http://www.cdc.gov/fluoridation/fact_sheets/engineering/wfadditives.htm#10).

SiFs are recovered from solutions used to scrub toxins from smokestacks at phosphate fertilizer plants.

They are likely to be contaminated with lead, arsenic, heavy metals, and radionuclides.

The CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/fluoridation/fact_sheets/engineering/wfadditives.htm)claims that there are extremely low levels of these contaminants in fluoride compounds, but studies have shown an association with elevated blood lead levels in children who drink water treated with SiFs (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11233755).

A dentist (prob in his 70s now) told my MIA way back that if she took fluoride while she was preg, while their teeth were developing esp, it would give her kids strong teeth. She's convinced that's why they have good teeth and was OFFENDED that we chose not to follow suit with our kids.
