For purposes of window-shopping, education, and possible purchase -
what gun website do you like ?
Just looking for one that has user reviews, pictures, pictures from tours of manufacturing plants, etc.
Like Newegg - but for Guns.

classicarms.us
or
atlanticfirearms.com
are the only ones I've bought guns from. I've bought ammo from ammoman.com and aimsurplus.com too.
Unfortunately all of the above mentioned supplies were lost in the boating accident.

Depends on what firearms and the quality of workmanship/function. I have bought from J&G Sales, Classic Arms, Southern Ohio Gun (requires C&R or FFL on file), AIM Surplus, etc. For very good firearms and of course more expensive I have bought from KVAR and Assault Weapons of Ohio.

i've been enjoying those catalogs. good way to learn !
i had to ask myself, on this rifle, about the large round thing hanging from the mid-section. i thought it might be a mechanism that feeds bullets into position - a magazine - but the bracket that holds it to the rifle looks a little slender - like there's not enough room to pass a bullet and the sub-assembly that moves the bullet into the firing chamber.
i thought it could be 'just storage'.
what is that round thing ?

Black Blades post sums it up pretty well. Those are all generaly great places to get stuff.
The only one I will vehemtnly suggest staying away from is Cheaper Than Dirt due to their incredibly shaddy business practices and morals. They are a big website, so you'll likley run across them at some point. Dont give them the time of day.
You can also check out Gunbroker.com. Its an auction site, like ebay for guns, but they can be hit or miss sometimes.

Perhaps the ammo feeds out in a line like machine gun style from the cylinder into the open breach which is shown in the pic.

Its a magazine that holds a belt, that feeds into the receiver in that large slot you see. A door hinges down to allow access to the belt.

what do you guys think of Favela's, i.e. their prices on ammunition ?
i enjoyed my trip there. went with a friend from GIM1, who has served as a firearms instructor for me.
one of the best deals i've witnessed on bullets was .40+ caliber, at a garage sale last year.
guy had about 20 boxes, 50 bullets each, $5 a box. i was busy getting a deal on other stuff, but i watched the deal on the ammo go down. it slowly dawned on me that in the process of getting MY deal, that i may have missed the BEST deal.
made me wonder, in a situation like that - how do you know you're getting good ammo ? when the price is "too good to be true".
when a box has gotten wet and been dried out, you can usually tell. these boxes looked new.
if ammo is degraded, can you usually (or always) tell by appearance ?
side note - i visited a neighbor's gun shop yesterday. had some mighty fine guns. his wall display was very impressive - guns with scopes, in-between size gun/rifles with high-capacity magazines.
