Teens set kid on fire for being 'white boy'

A 13-year-old boy who police say was doused with gasoline and lit on fire last week while walking home from school is recovering from first-degree burns to his face and head.

The boy was just two blocks from his home in Kansas City Tuesday when two teenagers began to follow him and then attacked him, his mother, Melissa Coon, said.

Police have described the suspects as black 16-year-olds, while the victim is white.

"We were told it's a hate crime," Coon told KTLA.

"They rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open," Coon told KMBC. "(One of them) poured the gasoline, then flicked the Bic, and said, 'This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy.'"

By lighting the gasoline, the second attacker "produced a large fireball burning the face and hair" of the boy, according to a Kansas City Police Department report obtained by KCTV.

"It was pretty bad stuff," Detective Stacey Taylor told the TV station, adding that police are concerned the boy may have suffered damage to his eyes and lungs.

Coon said her son put out the fire with his shirt and called 911 himself. He was rushed to the hospital and was treated for his injuries.

She believes the students also attend East High School with her son, and said he will not be returning to the school. She also told KMBC her traumatized family plans now plans to move.

"My 5-year-old came in and asked me, 'Mom, am I going to get set on fire today?'" Coon said. "I was in tears."

Because the attackers are black and the burned youth is white, some media outlets have reported the incident as a possible hate crime. However, Kansas City police have said since the incident first was reported that they do not think it was a hate crime.::)

i think most crimes against people are hate crimes and/or "gotta get me some" crimes (e.g. petty theft, killing someone for their shoes.)


i got mugged about 18 years ago by a racially diverse group. big black kid, some shorter Hispanic kids - 4 of them altogether. i'm Caucasian i.e. White, grandparents from Sweden & Germany. i was in the middle of walking down Geary in SF, to the USF gym. i had noticed that i was getting some MAJOR stink-eye while i was walking past some of the projects, so that one day i thought i would detour & stay on Geary.

which ended up taking me past the Divisadero & Geary projects.

i peed in my pants, i realized afterwards. the cop said, "we know who they are, but we don't have enough evidence to prosecute".

i had been working on a home-made oscilloscope, and i was walking down the street in a delirium of circuit design madness. i.e. paying NO attention to what was going on around me.

when i found myself laying on the ground staring at 4 pairs of legs, my eyes went into hyper-scan mode, just looking for the blue & black tint of a steel tube, i.e. a gun. no gun. i threw about $15 on the ground. they ran off.

this all happened about 50 yards from a particular bus stop. call it bus stop Alpha.


a year later, a non-gang-affiliated teen-ager was shot and killed at bus stop Alpha. the police said it was the Divisadero/Geary gang - probably the same kids that whacked me upside the head.

i continued on to the gym. a few gym visits later, i saw one of my brothers at the gym. i told him about the incident. he asked if i had been attacked by a black person, laughing because he was trying to find a politically-correct-but-entertaining term, like "were you attacked by a distinguished citizen of blackness ?". it was sort of comical. there was an older black guy on the same aisle, listening to us. he gave my brother some stink eye.
