You sir, just got crossed off the party list! Nice going.
This lottery is the biggest longshot in the world with the biggest payoff. Surely a chance at a dream is worth a $10 bag of rice in your preps?

That's what I told the dude @ AM/PM after waiting in line for 6 old ladies/messicans to waste my time buying lottery tickets.

He didn't get it.

You have zero chance of winning if you play, and less then zero if you don't.
Those are the odds...off I go now to by mine!

They say you are 50x more likely to be struck by lightning then hit the jackpot (based on 90 ppl/yr getting hit).
Buy 50 tickets and your odds come to 1:1. Feel like getting hit my lightning today? Its storming here now, so I guess its better then zero chance!

I bought my first ticket since my 18th birthday yesterday

The whole thing has a Zimbabwe feel to it. When I purchased the ticket yesterday my ticket said $540 million jackpot, but today the tickets will be reading $640 million jackpot :D

Dude... that's the better part of a BILLION dollars. If you spent a billion at the rate of 100,000/day, it would take you 26 years to spend it.

Zimbabwe, indeed.

Zerohedge showed some of the math - approximately 280 people a year get struck by lightning in the US, so it is an approximate of 1 in a million chance for that to happen.

Lotto winning is estimated to be about 1 in 175 million, so it is more like 175 times more likely to get struck by lightning than win the lotto ;D

I'll take my chances for 2 bucks!

Party on EE. Good luck!

I've never bought a "real" lotto ticket before (except for $1 scratch offs...I've bought 10 of those over my lifetime so far...yes I keep track...and I've won $26)
My wife wants me to buy 2 tickets...I'm still trying to decide what to do...

Wrong. I know how math works and I still buy them. Why? What is a couple dollars a week? Some people eat cookies for a couple dollars a week. I buy lotto tickets and workout. It's a trade off.

Lotto tickets are entertainment, and a lot less than a movie!

If they sold em in Fl I'd throw $5 at it. A lot of good could be done with that kinda cash. Good luck to those of you who do play.

Odds be damned... The $5 I spent... Gives me a finger in the pie.

As others said earlier... if you dont play you have 0% chance of winning.

Heck I would share that winning number with 100 people and still have more money converted to PM than I could reasonably spend.

I usually spend about 4 dollars a week on the lottery. I have never won a big jackpot... but over the years I have one over $10,000. I am still ahead of the game.

So maybe one day lightning will strike me. 8-)

If I do win the $549 million dollar prize... every one of you are invited to a party on board a ship for a week of adventure and fun in the Caribbean. All expenses paid... and a 1oz gold Eagle in your hand as you leave the ship to go home. 8-) I am not kidding!!! Now wouldnt that be a party?

By not buying a lottery ticket I have the advantage of 100% chance of not losing.

That is, you say I cannot win if I do not play while I say I cannot lose if I do not play.

I should definitely get one. I think the math works out fine - jumping in at the end when people have already pumped it up is a little different.

This is actually true. You're odds of winning are 176M:1. A one-winner payoff would be $600M. There will likely be 2 or 3 winners, so you're probably going to get paid back at at least 200M:1, so the math works out okay toward the end of these cumulative pools.

I don't normally play them, but I'll probably buy a ticket for fun. I'll get my $1 worth of entertainment. ;)

that makes me wonder - what is God's position on lottery tickets ?

does God occasionally intervene to make a particular person win ? or does God have a total hands-off policy ?

i figure it's worth buying 1 ticket for $1 (or is it $2 these days ?). that way, if God wants me to win, i can win.

i used to play a set of numbers, based on the CPU speeds of the first computers i had - 12, 16, 20, 25, 33.

Just went out and played it for the first time with 5 quick picks, jackpot is over 640 million.

If I win that baby I'mma buy a large private island and turn it into a permanent gs-us retreat/bugout location free for use to any and all gs-us members.

I have a friend who told me he prays for the numbers and it perfectly squares with the concept of praying for knowledge of God's will and the power to carry that out. Being attached to the outcome (i.e. having your own plans for the money) seems to be the counterpoint to this lofty method.

There is a 95% chance someone will win the Mega Millions jackpot Friday night, a lottery official said, based on statistical data coming into the California lottery office.

"The odds of the jackpot rolling is going down significantly," Mega Millions spokesman Alex Traverso said. "Our estimates are saying that by the time the draw happens, 95% of the possible number combinations will be sold."

Traverso said California lottery officials will likely know about any big winners as early as 8:15 p.m. and plan to post the locations where the tickets were sold on their website.

California officials said they likely won't know about other state's winners until 3 a.m. or beyond. A media release summing up all the data will likely go out Saturday morning.

Spokeswoman Donna Cordova said that there will be no more changes to the advertised jackpot prior to Friday night's drawing, but the amount at stake may continue to rise, and a new jackpot figure could be released after the winning numbers are drawn.

If no one hits the jackpot, Traverso said there is a "possibility" that Mega Millions would hold its Tuesday drawing in New York's Time Square rather than a studio in Atlanta.

"If the jackpot did roll, and we were looking at a jackpot near $1 billion, I can't imagine a better place," Traverso said.
