...something about this story doesn't sit right with me...

Saskatoon retailers are on the lookout. Counterfeit $100 bills have been showing up in the city over the last week.

The bills have turned up at stores and entertainment venues. The bills are from the now-defunct Birds of Canada series.

Police are asking the public, especially business owners, to refuse bills from this series.

The counterfeit bills are of such high quality, Sgt. Jerry Boechler with the SPS Fraud Unit, says they are difficult to detect.

"These particular bills, number one, the paper they are produced on the paper appears to be quite close to what genuine currency is produced on, so the feel of the paper is quite close to genuine currency."

Meanwhile, the new edition of the Canadian 100 dollar bills is in circulation. Police say they have yet to find any counterfeit notes of these polymer bank notes, which are easier to read and harder to duplicate.

...I am inclined to think that they are fabricating this story in order to get the old $100 bills out of circulation.
soon, they will issue a statement saying the old bills have to be turned in by a certain date or they will be worthless.

I know how to spot the 'counterfeit' bills....

If you look very closely, in small letters, you will see 'FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE'. This is a tell tale sign of a FORGERY.

btw, is it not against the law to refuse "legal tender"? can the police tell merchants to not accept legal tender? that seems weird to me...

it's not that surprising.

the Digital Age has put a lot of old-school printers and machinists out of business.

it's not too surprising that they would get busy crafting items for barter.

A friend of mine got a fake $50 note in his store the other day. At a glance, It looked real and it felt real but when you held it up to the light, the little cellophane strip wasn't there.

Well, he said he does have the video of the guy but it would cost him way more than the $50 he's already lost to chase him down, so he's just letting it go.
