Amazing little probe. Could come in handy for checking out buildings. I bet the field version will have rubber coated wheels, infrared cameras, laser pointers and GPS location transmission.

"Sand Flea is developed by funding from DARPA."

That's why I posted that they love us soooooo much, and they do everything for our benefit.

You would probably want a few models of these.

Modify to spray gas. Concussion Grenades or Flash Bangs. Radar Jamming. Video/Audio recon. Small EMP (sacrificing itself). Localized frequency warfare. The options just keep on going. In the future, cities at war might be infested with pests like these. Just drop 10,000 behind the lines - different purposes, working in tandem.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - DARPA

One of the oldest military thinktanks. They have set the tone for military-industrial research for many many decades.

DARPA was established during 1958 (as ARPA) in response to the Soviet launching of Sputnik during 1957, with the mission of keeping U.S. military technology more sophisticated than that of the nation's potential enemies. From DARPA's own introduction:

DARPA’s original mission, established in 1958, was to prevent technological surprise like the launch of Sputnik, which signaled that the Soviets had beaten the U.S. into space. The mission statement has evolved over time. Today, DARPA’s mission is still to prevent technological surprise to the US, but also to create technological surprise for its enemies.

DARPA is independent from other more conventional military R&D and reports directly to senior Department of Defense management

Skunkworks R&D to the max. A small cadre of the worlds most sinister engineers. Talented beyond belief.

They invented the backbone of the internet. DARPANET, aka as ARPANET, the first operational packet switching network of a set that came to compose the global Internet.

Go read about some of their other projects. You've heard of them.

What would mess them up is bird netting. Gum up the wheels. Also, fly paper or gooey traps.

Yeah, a number of options come to mind, however one thing is for sure - one wouldn't want to get very close to one which one has immobilized as it could have a self-destruct capable of collateral damage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_Laboratory

Rome Air Development Center (RADC) Laboratory, Military Think Tank, 1951-1997.

Then came DARPA.

when you work for a defense contractor, it's common to run across reference material from RADC, while working on a project for DARPA.

i wouldn't be surprised if DARPA has been superceded at this point by new programs, of similar nature.

i wouldn't say the engineers are that sinister. i would say the managers are. i would say the engineers are more childlike, especially about history, spoon-fed conspiracy theories like the Holocaust Hoax and raised to believe in American exceptionalism.

believing of course, that they are "working for the good guys."
