SONNY Bono, former husband and singing partner of superstar Cher, was clubbed to death by hitmen on the orders of drug and weapons dealers who feared he was going to expose them, a former FBI agent claims.
Ted Gunderson, now a private investigator, has told the US Globe tabloid that Bono, who served as mayor of Palm Springs for four years, did not die after hitting a tree on a Nevada ski slope in January 1998 as everyone believed.
"It's nonsense for anyone to now try to suggest that Bono died after crashing into a tree. There's zero evidence in this autopsy report... to show such an accident happened. Instead, there's powerful proof he was assassinated.
"This was an evil plot that was carried out to almost perfection by ruthless assassins," Mr Gunderson told the paper.
The former agent, who has been researching Bono's accident for the past decade, said top officials linked to an international drug and weapons ring feared the singer-turned-politician was about to expose their crimes - so they had him killed on the slopes.
Bono, an experienced skiier, was ambushed on the slopes by hired hitmen, who beat him to death and then staged a tree collision, Mr Gunderson said.
He called for authorities to dig up Bono's remains and open a homicide investigation.
His claims have reportedly been backed by top forensics experts who fear Nevada authorities were too quick to call the death a skiing accident.
Investigator Bob Fletcher had also confessed he sent evidence of a 10-year study that linked top US government officials to arms and weapons dealers to Bono less than a month before his death, the Globe reported.
"(Bono) was going to make it his No.1 priority... There's no doubt in my mind Sonny was murdered by someone who needed him silenced," Mr Fletcher told the paper.

Having done a lot of skiing, the odds of killing yourself hitting a tree are essentially laughable.
Bad bruise...sure...beak a bone...perhaps.....die?
Was SB routinely hitting massive air straight into into groves of tree trunks?

Bob Fletcher was on AJ the other day and had a very interesting story about Bono. He claimed Bono had put together a Congressional hearing committee that had real subpoena powers to investigate into CIA drug trafficking.
He said Sonny actually went to Washington thinking he could do good. He quickly realized he was surrounded by crooks, everywhere. He was supposedly devastated to find out about government drug dealing. He apparently had several breakdowns over it.
Bob Fletcher is the one who submitted most of the info in a report to Sonny, as requested by Sonny.
He also mentioned that Sonny was so infurious, that he went out of his way to make sure he had secured real subpoena powers to investigate. Meaning he was going to call, by name, many different high ranking politicians and military personal, that would either have to show up and answer all the questions, or go to prison. He set up the Congressional committee, and he was the head of it, to make sure it didnt get co-opted.
Sonny had everything set up to move forward. He went on a 10 day vacation, and when he returned he was going to pursue the Government for these crimes. He never made it back though.....

Joboo? Those odds still happen more than you think or else the way we thought he died wouldn't have been so believable.

Out of all the people that go skiing it's in the realm of getting hit by lightning.
Percentages are really low.

About 40 people a year, of that many just have heart attacks, or get lost, and freeze to death.

AN ADDITIONAL PERSPECTIVE
To place skiing and snowboarding safety into context (and keeping in mind that this is not statistically significant) it helps to offer a perspective: The National Safety Council (Injury Facts, 2010 edition) points out that in 2008:
39,000 Americans died in motor-vehicle accidents;
6,162 pedestrians were killed;
6,700 died from unintentional public falls;
3,800 died from unintentional public poisoning;
3,600 people drowned while swimming in public areas;
900 died while bicycle riding;
129 died from tornadoes;
and 25 died from lightning.

article from '98:
Sonny Bono Killed in Skiing Accident
By M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor
January 6, 1998 — It is the second high-profile skiing accident in the past week. Congressman Sonny Bono, who became popular in the 1970’s as husband and singing partner of Cher, was killed Monday while skiing with his family at Heavenly Ski Resort, a resort in California. His body was found by the ski patrol on the Nevada side of the resort two hours after he was reported missing by family members. A preliminary investigation shows his death as an accident, although an autopsy will be performed.
Bono is described as a proficient skier with many years of experience. The Associated Press quotes a Heavenly employee as stating that Bono was skiing alone at the top of the Orion slope when he crossed beneath a chairlift and hit a tree.
This latest skiing accident follows on the heals of another high-profile accident. On December 31, Michael Kennedy, son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was killed while skiing at Colorado’s Aspen resort. Reports indicate that Kennedy was participating in a game of “football,” using a water bottle, while skiing with his family down the slopes. An autopsy showed that Kennedy suffered instantaneous and incapacitating injuries after hitting a tree.
Each year, an average of 35 people die from skiing or snowboarding accidents, although few receive as much attention as Kennedy’s or Bono’s. Local resorts are not immune to accidents. On December 31, a 59-year-old man died after crashing and breaking his neck on the Snow Park trail at Whitetail. This was the second fatality to occur at Whitetail since the resort opened in 1991. Fatalities at all area resorts are uncommon, but not unheard of.
Most ski accidents result from severe head trauma after collisions with immovable objects, such as trees. Often, but not always, a skier or snowboarder involved in an accident fails to properly judge his or her ability level. Some accidents are alcohol- or drug-related. Other accidents result from a skier or boarder becoming lost or trapped in a tree well.
On the whole, skiing is a relatively safe sport if one skis cautiously. The severity of many accidents can be reduced through the use of a helmet. Although helmets have become commonplace in sports such as biking and rollerblading, they have yet to make many inroads in skiing, although many children now ski with helmets. Although there is likely to be resistance, the latest string of high-profile accidents may result in a push towards helmet use for all skiers and snowboarders.

As an aside, the extended Kennedy family (children and grandchildren of patriarch Joe, Sr.) has experienced an extraordinary number of early deaths. Compared to statistical expectations, it's off the charts really.

Pardon me if this is a thread hijack, but it's fascinating. Joe and Rose Kennedy had 9 children and 33 grandchildren, for a total of 42 immediate descendants. Of those 42:
Children
Joe Jr., military plane crash, Age 29
JFK, assassination, 46
Kathleen Kennedy, plane crash, 28
RFK, assassination, 42
JFK's children
Arabella Kennedy, stillborn
JFK, Jr, plane crash, 38
Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, infant respiratory distress syndrome, 2 days
RFK's children
David Anthony Kennedy, drug overdose, 28
Michael Courtney Kennedy, ski accident, 38

Interesting I've skied Heavenly a few times, and the last time I dropped in out of bounds, and had to ski/walk down from 10,000ft elevation in full gear eventually winding up on a highway in Nevada (from California).
I know the area near the Nevada border well. Two double black diamond runs are really the only reason to get out to that part of the hill.
If he was a good skier I'd say the chances of wiping out fatally there are extremely slim to none, and I like to ski on a few beers pretty much all the time.
Hmm...bizarre

LOL sure...ok.
I would not say many people get struck by lightning, and the numbers are essentially identical.
