Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.

Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.

Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Martin family, said this week that Corey’s office had asked where Trayvon’s parents would be each day this week. They arrived Wednesday in Washington for a civil rights conference organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton, where they are scheduled to speak.

The announcement of a charge against Zimmerman would come a day after Zimmerman’s attorneys withdrew from the case, citing their inability to contact Zimmerman.

Lawyers Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig on Tuesday expressed concern about Zimmerman’s emotional and physical well-being, saying he has taken actions without consulting them. They also said they do not know where Zimmerman is.

“You can stop looking in Florida,” Uhrig told reporters. “Look much further away than that.”

Corey said Monday that she would not bring the case before a grand jury, which was expected to convene this week. She said her decision to forgo the grand jury should not be viewed as a factor in determining whether charges will be filed.

Corey has indicated in recent weeks that she might not need a grand jury to bring charges against Zimmerman.

The lawyers said they stand by their assertions that Zimmerman acted in self-defense when he killed the 17-year-old, who was unarmed, but they acknowledged that they formed their impressions without meeting Zimmerman.

Yep. And when he's finally found "not guilty", the rioting can really take off! At least that's my take on it...

George Zimmerman, 28, could face life in prison and up to $10,000 in fines for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17. The AP is reporting Zimmerman is in custody in Florida.
The news that Zimmerman would be charged was leaked to the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/) and CNN (http://www.cnn.com/) Wednesday, which quoted an unnamed government official saying Zimmerman "will be criminally charged, if he hasn't already."
Special Prosecutor Angela Corey has called a news conference for 6 p.m. ET, presumably to discuss the charges.
The Martin family has declined to comment on the possible charges until they are confirmed by the special prosecutor.
The story broke as the family addressed a crowd at the annual convention of the National Action Network, a civil rights organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"When the special prosecutor makes her decision, we want to make sure that everything remains peaceful and responsible, and that nothing gets out of hand," said Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Martin family Wednesday.
The Sanford Police Department told CNN that they were preparing for the possibility of violence.
The family and their attorneys once again reiterated their push to get charges filed against Zimmerman.
"When you look at the history of this journey, it's been 44 days and counting now," Crump said. "All we're asking for is an arrest so we know the wheels of justice are turning."
Crump also said it was "troubling" that Zimmerman's former attorneys, who announced Tuesday that they could no longer represent their client (http://www.wnem.com/story/17371121/zimmerman-in-hiding-as-his-lawyers-bow-out), had never met him face-to-face.
"The killer of Trayvon Martin is unaccounted for," he said. "We are concerned that he's a flight risk. We are very concerned that he will never be brought to justice."
The sentiment was also shared by Sharpton.
"It is unheard of for someone to kill an unarmed innocent man and walk out of the police station," he said. "Now we're told 43 days later that [his attorneys] can't even reach him."
Attorney General Eric Holder also spoke at the event. He told a crowd that the Justice Department and FBI are still investigating whether Zimmerman will face federal civil rights crime charges for the shooting (http://www.wnem.com/story/17384132/civil-rights-charges-possible-in-trayvon-case).
Martin, was shot and killed by Zimmerman, who thought Martin looked "suspicious" as he walked through a gated community. Zimmerman claimed he shot the teen in self-defense.
Police didn't arrest Zimmerman because they said evidence on the scene matched his story.

Yes, in the day, all the media that was was hyping the verdict and the injustice to Rodney. Did we see a mass uprising outside of LA?

I don't see it. By the time the trial rolls around, like 18 months from now, it will long be forgotten except for the general area.

"My personal feeling is that, as a young kid that was beat on by a bully, that was pretty much singled out—the guy [Zimmerman] stalked him, didn't follow instructions from a superior officer, when they said, 'Stop following the kid.' That tells you everything right there. But my all-around perspective, I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. But it's just so widespread and overt what happened. Even though this is the best country in the world, certain laws in this country are a disgrace to a nation of savages. It's a majority versus a minority. That's the way God planned it. He didn't want to do something about it, He wanted us to do something about it. And if we don't, it's gonna stay this way. We have to continue tweeting, we have to continue marching, we have to continue fighting for Trayvon Martin. If that's not the case, he was killed in vain, and we're just waiting for it to happen to our children. He'll have gotten away with impunity.

It's a disgrace that man hasn't been dragged out of his house and tied to a car and taken away.

That's the only kind of retribution that people like that understand. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet. Forget about him being arrested--the fact that he hasn't been shot yet is a disgrace. That's how I feel personally about it."

FBI queried gun dealers in Zimmerman case (http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/06/15/2851642/fbi-queried-gun-dealers-in-zimmerman.html)

The FBI dispatched at least 10 special agents to Central Florida to investigate the Trayvon Martin shooting, records filed in Seminole County Court show.

The agents interviewed up to a dozen firearms dealers, gun range employees and private investigators about George Zimmerman, according to a court document filed Friday by Assistant State Attorney Bernardo de la Rionda. Another 11 investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement also joined the probe.

“Two FBI agents showed up here with a picture of Zimmerman asked me if I recognized him,” said gun dealer Khaled Akkawi, who was listed as a witness in the case. “They were pretty much asking along the lines of if he had made racial comments or anything. My employees told me it couldn’t be further from the truth.

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A color photograph of George Zimmerman with a bloody, swollen nose taken on the night he shot and killed unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin last February was posted on the Internet on Monday by Zimmerman's legal defense team.
