DEARBORN, Mich., April 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AAA Michigan is extremely disappointed that legislation which allows some motorcyclists to ride without a helmet on the state's roadways has been signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder. Public Act 98, which takes effect today, is poor public policy and will increase motorcycle fatalities and injuries, AAA Michigan reports.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110321/CL67889LOGO )
The repeal erases more than three decades of Michigan's mandatory helmet law. The new law allows motorcyclists to ride without a helmet if they have a $20,000 medical policy, have had the cycle endorsement for at least two years, or completed a motorcycle safety course.
The governor had earlier indicated he would not be supportive of the helmet law unless it was tied to some form of no-fault auto insurance reform. Because the repeal will result in additional injuries -- which will ultimately be paid for by all Michigan motorists -- the need is even more critical for changes in the state's current no-fault system.
The repeal of the motorcycle helmet law will result in at least 30 additional motorcycle fatalities each year, along with 127 more incapacitating injuries and $129 million in added economic costs to Michigan residents. This analysis by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning is based on the experience of other states where similar measures have been enacted. As evidenced by increased medical costs passed on to taxpayers, motorcycle deaths and long-term catastrophic injuries are on the rise.
Motorcycle crashes account for a disproportionate share of money paid out of the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA), a fund which is supported by a surcharge on every auto insurance policy in Michigan. Although motorcyclists represent 1.9 percent of the assessments paid into the MCCA, they account for 5 percent of all money paid out and 7 percent of all claims reported. Since its inception in 1978, MCCA has reimbursed member insurers more than $321 million for 712 motorcycle injury claims exceeding the threshold.
Challengers of Michigan's mandatory motorcycle helmet law had tried for years to get the law repealed without regard for the common good. Surveys of AAA Michigan members over many years showed overwhelming support for keeping the mandatory helmet law.
AAA Michigan encourages all motorcyclists to always wear their helmets while riding as a safety precaution.

This is one thing that has never passed in ILLinois oddly enough. Bikers are not forced to wear helmets, but we all have to have a special card to buy guns and ammo.

Well said. I personally use to do track days all the time before I got into dogs and had some get offs at over 100+, I couldn't imagine being on a motorcycle without a full face helmet and leathers.

Wrong thread and completely off topic, but get off your behind and do some unbanning.

They are both big boys who can handle it and no warning was given to take to the Thunderdome.

It doesn't work that way. JQP's site, his rules, which I partly agree with and partly don't - but which I've agreed to uphold anyway - as this forum is HIS property. You want to attack other members and sling insults and hate at each other, START it in the thunderdome, or post that you'll meet them there for some "discussion". Open attacks in the main forum areas are NOT tolerated, have NEVER been tolerated, and WILL result in a ban almost without exception. I've been banned myself for this exact thing, I did not whine about it - I knew the rules and consequences, and I did not want others going "to bat" on my behalf to get me unbanned.

solid and midnight both knew the rules, they've both been banned before for the EXACT same thing, and they had ZERO reason to think that anything had changed from the last time. They both knew what would happen, they both attacked anyway, and they both got what they knew was coming.

I would feel better about it, if wasn't the fact that you happened to be watching that thread. If you, the slumlord, or madfranks were not looking at the thread, would it have mattered? I have seen when you have banned members when the offending posts were at least a day or two old.

The argument between midnightrambler and solid wasn't out of control. Just heated words between the two. I think you overreacted. Just my opinion, of course.

madfranks and I can't be everywhere, and read everything... I spend a lot of time here and read pretty fast, yet still probably end up reading only about 1/4 of the total posts in this place. I happened to read that particular thread after MANY heated exchanged had gone back and forth - it was not in my awareness until then.

exactly. imho, it's like the tree falling in the forest.....

Why not give a warning? They are both respected members and things got heated as things sometimes do. Why not give a warning?

Fell free to move my posts to the unbanned thread of Serpo. Definitely hijacking cebu's thread.

Hijack away, I have really enjoyed a couple threads the last few days and it all came abruptly to a stop. It wasn't like watching a bar fight but none the less it was fun. Ahh well, I'll go see what Palini is up to.

But at least you don't have to wear a helmet for the trip over there now.
