Getting to school on time can be difficult for some students, but these children have a justifiable reason if they're late - they have to cross a massive valley in a homemade cable car just to get there.

They live in Decun village in southwest China's Guizhou Province, and are willing to take a risk every day to receive their education.

Their dangerous trip is the polar opposite to how children here journey to school - some parents are so fearful they refuse to let their children walk and feel more secure dropping them directly outside the school gate.

Surprisingly, the treacherous contraption is actually an improvement for the children - they used to have to make the journey on foot, which took over five hours.

The situation only changed in 2002 when local Hui Defang built a simple cableway.

He said: 'It's too far for students each day going to and back from school. Thinking my kids are reaching school age soon, I decided to build a cableway for them.

Also it could be convenient for the 100 other kids in the village to get to the school,' he added.

Hui and other 20 villagers worked for free for one month to build the transport system.

Now the cableway has become the only access point to the outside world to the 2,000 villagers who live in Decun.

It costs 1 Yuan per time for students to cross and 2 Yuan per time for adults.

"Each time I take the cableway, my heart would beat faster,' said one young schoolgirl.
