CU makes stink to deter 4/20 revelers today
DENVER — The pungent smell of pot that blankets a popular quadrangle at the University of Colorado-Boulder every April 20 is being replaced by the stench of fish-based fertilizer today as administrators try to stamp out one of the nation's largest annual campus celebrations of marijuana.
After more than 10,000 people -- students and nonstudents -- attended last year's marijuana rally on Norlin Quadrangle, university officials decided this year to apply the stinky fertilizer to the quad to deter pot-smokers. They're also closing the campus today to all unauthorized visitors and offering a free campus concert by Haitian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean timed to coincide with the traditional 4:20 p.m. pot gathering.
The measures pit Colorado's flagship university, which has tired of its reputation as a top party school, against thousands who have assembled, flash mob-style, each year to demand marijuana's legalization or simply to have a good time.
With more than 30,000 students, Colorado was named the nation's top party school in 2011 by Playboy magazine. The campus also repeatedly ranks among the top schools for marijuana use, according to a "Reefer Madness'' list conducted by The Princeton Review.
"We don't consider this a protest. We consider this people smoking pot in the sunshine,'' said university spokesman Bronson Hilliard. "This is a gathering of people engaging in an illegal activity.''
"I do not see any justification for the university shutting it down,'' said student organizer Daniel Ellis Schwartz, who contends the measures infringe on First Amendment rights to protest. Schwartz, a physics major, and other supporters of the 4/20 smoke out plan to move it to a nearby park off-campus. He suggests there also will be some form of off-campus protest against the measures.
"We do have to play a game of chess with the authorities,'' Schwartz said.
Many students at the University of Colorado and other campuses across the country have long observed 4/20. The counterculture observation is shared by marijuana users from San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to New York's Greenwich Village.
The number 420 has been associated with marijuana use for decades, though its origins are murky. Its use as code for marijuana spread among California pot users in the 1960s and spread nationwide among followers of the Grateful Dead.

4/20 at CU Boulder: Wyclef Jean concert, police crackdown to shrink event?
For months, members of CU Boulder's student government have talked about their desire to move the annual 4/20 celebration off campus. But the logistics of doing so proved challenging, prompting leaders to opt for a low-key campaign to shrink attendance. Now we know the centerpiece of their plan: a Wyclef Jean concert that'll be free for students and is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. that day. The idea is to turn show attendees into a captive audience.
As we've reported, CU officials have never been thrilled with the 4/20 spectacle, but shortly after last year's version, which drew a throng of thousands, regent Michael Carrigan spoke out, calling for 4/20 at CU to be banned due to the expense of protecting so-called "outsiders" who flood into Boulder for the day. He put the cost at $50,000.
Thumbnail image for michael carrigan.jpg
Michael Carrigan.
That July, student leaders picked up this drumbeat, with Brooks Kanski, vice president for external affairs with the university's student government arm, known as CUSG, telling us, "We have some concerns with the event itself and the way it's conducted -- and the crowd it draws onto campus during classes." He added, "As an administration, we agree that we're here to increase the all-around excellence of our students, and part of that is contributing to a strong academic performance and a strong public image of our school. And this is a negative contributor for our school. We've seen its impact on our school's reputation across the country, and it's something we want to correct -- for the value of our students' degrees more than budget concerns."
Cut to today, when CU students received an e-mail about the Wyclef Jean show -- and the tone of the missive, on view below in its entirety, is certainly much more hardassed that the typical concert announcement. For one thing, the carrot of the gig (at the Coors Events Center, which seats just over 11,000 people) is accompanied by the stick of harsh crackdowns on those who choose to celebrate 4/20. For one thing, tickets will be issued at the traditional Norlin Quad location, or anywhere else on campus, with fines up to $100. Moreover, those cited "will have their names posted on the CU-Boulder police website's crime log, which could affect their employment futures," the e-mail announces.

Here's a clip from last year's 4/20 day. All I see is lots of people, a giant cloud, then they all leave and even pick up their trash!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re7RdnzeX98&feature=player_embedded
And in anticipation of this, they're locking down the campus and instituting a "show me your papers" police state for the day. WTF! This is wayyyy more tame than what happens when some sports team wins a championship and all the drunks start rioting in the streets!

OK, this is new ground for me, but I'm going to defend Book's post here.
Although his posts are generally statist, he did not advocate outlawing MJ in THIS post. It's not un-American to advocate sobriety. And it is certainly reasonable to believe that power hungry people want their targets to be under the influence of something and compromised in some way. Whether it be alchohol, sports, MJ or harder drugs, they don't care. All they care about is getting an edge - or having you give them an edge.

I tend to agree, horseshoe3, however having confronted book on this subject in the past, his views are not as benign as the frame you are keeping them in. Perhaps the response was based on this knowledge?
Some might argue that altering their consciousness with cannabis keeps them farther outside the influence of government mind control.
I simply argue that people have a right to their own bodies and that the outlawing of plants is obnoxious to nature and to free thinking men.

I think book was referring to it more being a huge party than anything else. The drug war is a huge scam. But just because something is legal doesn't mean it should be used in excess. Binge drinking is legal but stupid, as an example.
So
legalization = good
huge parties = bad

Your right, it isnt unamerican to advocate for sobriety. But it is damn unamerican to tell someone how to run their life, and then to JUDGE them on it. Sheesh.....
Cannabis is not a drug, its medicine.
Break your conditioning!!!!!!!!!
-You show me a lazy stoner, and i will show you a person that was lazy before they started smoking weed.
-You show me an irresponsible stoner, and i will show you a person who was irresponsible before they started smoking weed.
-You show me a brain dead hippy (like Book posted), and i will show you a brain dead hippy LONG before he ever started smoking weed.
It is as if the system as used pavlovian conditioning on people to blame their personal habits on why their character is flawed. It is the OPPOSITE. Your personal habits are created by your character, not the other way around.
All the ancients used cannabis and hemp. ALL of them. The Founders used cannabis and hemp. The Native Americans used cannabis and hemp. All of the most creative and enlightened people in the history of man have used cannabis and hemp.
And now this systems declares it to be a 'dangerous drug' and we are supposed to forget about 6,000 years of recorded human history. Like Bernanke saying gold isnt money.

I know and I'm sure all of you know people that have never taken a drink or a toke and 8 times out of 10 they're the biggest, blindest sheep you've ever met.
If alcohol, drugs, tv, hollywood, porn make you compliant and stupid why are we in the midst of fighting DC? They should be easy pickins.
Beer is one of the backbones of this country too, right along with hemp.
Huge parties are bad? Ya might as well say small parties are bad! The logic does NOT follow. A big party is just a bunch of little parties within x amount of space. Not to mention that it's a whole hell of a lot easier for them to bust a small partry than one of large numbers...that's damn handy.
Most of Books stuff is just window dressing, nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's angering but unlike most of the other posters here there's not any real flesh and blood emotion or feelings mixed in with the pics or text.
Either you have a critical thinking mind or ya don't, period.

Herb makes you think deeply about things. It's a polar opposite to alcohol where you don't think.
Can't have too many people pondering the core realities of things.
Certainly a much wider awareness with a lot of the proper strains.
The derp stereotypes are based on some 70's ditch weed where you had to smoke a lid to get high....not excluding some of the harder strain indicas though. Narcotic for sure.
Sativas (aka good weed) get your mind running a mile a minute, and your body follows.
Certainly anti BLT project on the Sativas.
