This place was fascinating. It wasn't an anarchist utopia but the people still made the best of their bad (and cramped!) circumstances.

Based on this survey, the Walled City had a population density of approximately 1,255,000/km2 (3,249,000/sq mi) in 1987. For comparison, Hong Kong as a whole (itself one of the most densely populated areas on earth) had a population density of about 6,700/km2 (17,000/sq mi)

This is an old 1970's RTHK TV short programme on the life in the Walled City of Kowloon, Hong Kong.
Demolished in the early 90's, the city was the site of once one of the most densest population in the world.

33,000 people lived in 300+ 14 storey ramshackled buildings packed into about a 7.5 acre area.
Crime and illegal factories were certainly there, but everyday working people also inhabited the city.

You can see the maze of passageways.
All the buildings were walk-ups, as there were only 2 or 3 elevators in the entire city. Some of the buildings were 14 storeys tall.

In the film, it show how close the buildings are to each other. "Handshaking" buildings they were called.
The neighbour wants to use his iron and just passes his electric cord through the window to the next building a few feet away to borrow her power.

A short footage of a building in construction.

The rents were at least a two-thirds less than the rents on the outside in Hong Kong.
