So far I have not scored big. I managed to get a large tent for $3. I also picked up a couple of propane tanks for cooking- $15 for the pair. Retail value of those would be about $44. I will keep a few extra tanks for cooking when TSHTF.

One lady thought she had Sterling silverware and brought it out for me to see. All plated. I broke the bad news to her. I told her that if it was sterling, her box would be worth at least $600. She was surprised. She was going to visit a coin shop nearby. I warned her that if she had value, they would have told her is was worth $40.

When confronted with a situation like that, I am very careful NOT to be in the "appraising" business. I ask them what they want. If they have no clue, I ask them if some # would be acceptable to them. If I know that I cannot get a deal from them, I give them a couple clues.

I have noticed voracious feeders out there. People are anxious to find steals and there are a fair number of sales popping up now.

I recently bought: A trashbag full of assorted various size leather pieces, some almost 1/4" thick! Pieces of old clothing, purses, belts, hats, etc.

$5.00, talked him down from $7.

Only real score of the year, though I did find an old wood plane in decent shape... paid $10 for that.

I'm not much into garage sales, but a coworker who has a commercial pilots license is going to give me free flight lessons when he passes his instructor license here in a few months.
Hes passing on the wealth as he didnt have to pay for his commercial pilots license either.
He has a friend who owns 8 aircraft who uses the gas consumed as a write off on his taxes........this guy is a broker...go figure.
Not passing up this once in a life time opportunity!

Going to try and get up to twin engine this year and hopefully jet next year.

me too.

i'm also looking for ski stuff - regular ski's, a snowboard set-up, & cross country.

best price i saw for cross country last year was $25 for a good pair.

best price i saw for silverware last year was 10 cents each. i found one sterling butter knife mixed in, got that for 25 cents.

I look for made in America stainless steel cookware or cast iron and appliances.
