In a nutshell... They detained him, harassed him relentlessly, threatened him, attacked him, and literally beat him to death.
Brutal. This was a murder.

I don't think I can watch this, I saw it mentioned several times today on various news sources... I just always try to remember the police are our friends...
Thomas suffered brain injuries, facial fractures, rib fractures, and extensive bruising and abrasions, according to prosecutors.
He was taken off life support and died several days after the July 5th incident.
The Orange County coroner listed his manner of death as a homicide and said he died after having his chest compressed, leaving him unable to breathe.

Yeah it's pretty rough to watch. I skipped a bunch.
It begins when the first cop threatens to punch him in the face for not sitting down properly ?!?!, which goes on seemingly forever. So ridiculous. As soon as Kelly stood up over this endless "sit like this or else" bullshit, his friend comes out of left field and starts wailing on him with a baton.
Looked like about a liter of blood spilled on the pavement after they carry him off.

the family & community protests at city council were dramatic, I watched one or two at the time, not gonna find it now but I recall in one, police chief was there and someone who spoke (father?) threatened if he doesn't resign they're going to carry him out horizontal like.

Kelly Thomas beating: Judge may rule on Fullerton officers' trial (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/05/kelly-thomas-beating-judge-may-rule-on-fullerton-officers-trial.html)
...
Thomas, who suffered shattered bones in his face, broken ribs and bruises over much of his body, was taken off life support by his family and died five days after his encounter with police. Officer Manuel Ramos, 38, is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
Cpl. Jay Cicinelli, 40, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and using excessive force. Ramos faces a possible life prison term, Cicinelli four years in prison. Both have pleaded not guilty...
...During the scrum, Cicinelli can be seen on the video striking Thomas several times in the face with the butt of a Taser stun gun as officers pin him on the ground.
"I just smashed his face to hell," he can be heard telling a fellow officer...

The guy seemed like a harmless drifter. He made the mistake of consenting to them searching his backpack. He would have been better off not to speak at all. But they goaded him into talking.... and he clearly was not a real bright guy.
These cops need to spend some time in general population in prison. If they survive, let them become targets on the street.

How can one of them be charged with murder and the second one charged with involuntary manslaughter? I hope they both go to prison and get raped everyday for the rest of their lives.

I don't hope that. They are cops that screwed up big time, and need to be charged appropriately (2nd deg. murder and manslaughter, but probably not involuntary). A message needs to be sent to cops that they are not above the law.

Involuntary manslaughter, I think caps out at 4 years (in Kali), the cop that shot in the back and killed that unarmed, hands behind the back hand-cuffed guy at the SF BART station was convicted of IMS and served only 9 months in COUNTY JAIL, NOT PRISON.....so even if these cops are convicted, their chances are great they won't do much time and WON'T do ANY Hard Time

Yeah, hopefully they will get beaten and raped constantly in prison, then their souls will eventually pass to extra-dimensional Hell. I've seen this vid multiple times and it never fails to boil my blood on several fronts. It's not only the brutal and tyrannical abuse of power displayed upon someone who neither deserved it, nor could defend himself. It is also the fact that people, alot of them, will see this and say that he deserved it. That he was out of line not following commands, and he did something to be locked anyway so he's scum.
People feel superior, but when anything similar happens to them (abuse of power) etc. they cry victim. and cry and cry. It's all good as long as it is not happening to them.
And to add, willie is correct they will not go to prison but rather jail, county probably. Where they will be fine, this also adds another few degrees Fahrenheit.

I followed the SF bart cop case, at that time. Watched that video several times, and to me, there was no excuse. My explanation was he snapped, mentally, maybe temporarily, but his actions were intentional. There was no mistake, he intended to shoot an unarmed man in the back.
I will not watch the video in this thread. So, I refrain from commenting on it.

I met Kelly Thomas a few years ago. He was a well known drifter who panhandled all around North Orange County. He was harmless. It was pretty well known that he had some sort of mental illness, but i wasn't until the news articles came out that it we knew he was schitzophrenic, and refused to take his meds.
The part that gets me is when he is calling out for his dad while the thugs continue to beat on him. His dad had tried for years to get him help, but since Kelly was an adult, there was nothing anyone could do. Breaks my heart.
The cops are bullies, plain and simple. They beat up on a helpless, sick individual, and should be tried for murder, not manslaughter.

As soon as the guy who started the initial beating made the comment "cmon man do him" or something like that, after the other cop threatened to punch him in the face for not sitting on the sidewalk properly, I knew it was not going to end well.
Did the jury have access to this video is what I'm wondering?

Years ago when I was on the fire dept. We showed up to a scene of a suicide. A cop had got there first, cut the guy down (he hung himself), dragged the guy outside, by himself, and started CPR. We showed up, took over CPR, got the guy to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
That cop I will always remember. How one man could cut a guy down, and take him outside, to try and save him.
Years later, I went through police academy and was sworn in.
I took the time to watch this video, all 30 minutes of it. This was a murder. From the moment they hit this unarmed man with a baton. Seeing all those cops around him, at the end, with nobody helping this guy, is heart wrenching. Nobody is checking his breathing, nobody is seeing if he's bleeding or not. This is brutal, imo.

The way no.1 demon pulled on his rubber gloves(shudder) and explained to Kelly what he was about to do to his face was evidence of premeditation.
They intended to fuck the dude up. They rifled through his bag out of pure pretense. It was a set up.

There was a case similar to this in Australia--on Palm Island--near the Gt. Barrier Reef. It was a cop who arrested an aborigine and beat him to death in a jail cell. Thry made a movie out of it. Here's the trailer:
