'They won't get me out of here': Stubborn resident halts £350m development by threatening planners with Molotov cocktails

Any developer with plans to build a multi-million-pound scheme in a housing area can expect to encounter the occasional gripe from a concerned local resident.

But few could have predicted the lengths that one hard-headed homeowner would go to in trying to stop the construction of a £350million luxury development in China.

Zou Mingcan has refused to make way for the scheme and has declared war on the builders by rigging his one-bedroom apartment with home-made weapons and booby traps.

The stubborn 70-year-old, who lives on the sixth floor, can often be seen standing on the roof in a military camouflage uniform.

He keeps a terrifying array of Molotov cocktails and pelts approaching developers with bricks and rocks.

In revenge, builders have crushed his car and left it flattened outside the apartment block in Kunming, Yunnan province, southern China.

Planners claim they warned Zou almost a year ago that the apartment block was scheduled for demolition as part of a huge expansion of the city's upmarket housing district.

But Zou has told them he will not move until he is offered more compensation.

'I used to be a builder so I know all their tricks,' he said.

'They won't get me out of here until they pay me proper compensation.

'I know how much my flat is worth to them so they might as well pay up.'

How come he doesn't have problems with the cops? Seems like they'd just pay off the cops to take him away.

@ximmy, I keep thinking you are the user Blink.

@this thread, this story is insane, I love it. This guy was there first and they made their plans without asking him if he would acquiesce. They just assumed he would fold right away, but this guy does not have a single fuck to give.

See guys, palani is right. His feet were there first, so he effectively owns it. The counter-offer is a Molotov cocktail. $^^^$

The joke, to me, is that he's willing to sell, and they aren't willing to buy.

I just have a hard time seeing this type of thing happen in the US. Here are some issues I see:

1) Occupying a damaged, condemned structure. Health/safety violation, but he's unwilling to leave = swat teamed
2) Existence of booby traps and home-made weapons. ATF weapons violations = swat teamed
3) Throwing rocks and bricks at construction workers. Assault with a deadly weapon and non-compliance = swat teamed

It seems like he's got a hell of a lot more freedom than we do. (Maybe not rights though. I'm sure they'd knock down the building with him inside if he didn't have firebombs all around the perimeter.)
