mods- if this needs to be moved to bartering thread, ok.
The last couple weeks have been pretty near a bust for me. No real decent scores and yet I put in a fair number of hours- 5 each Saturday.
I was figuring I would give it a break yesterday when I found nothing good after 4 hours. I stopped in one place where they were moving and wanted to sell nearly everything. Alas, they would not part with their coins... but she took my number in case they had a change of heart.... she requested it. Normally I won't give it.
Another hunter heard me and began to tell a story. I contained my impatience and listened. She was a chubby ethnic looking woman who was a professional treasure hunter at these little asset mines. She said that she stopped at a place a while back... maybe years ago by the way she said it. And there were large glass bottles in the front yard. She described them as the kind I use for fermenting wine.... 4 or 6 gallon.... but they were painted. She asked about them and the owner said she could have them for $4 each.
At this point I was thinking, so what? I really would not be interested in painted glass bottles that had been sitting out in someone's front yard for maybe years.... in fact they were probably put there by the previous owner of the house.
She said her family... I guess husband and boys... were not happy with her bargain and mad at how heavy they were to load in her car. She gave me this funny look and said the back of the car went down to the ground. I was thinking they got themselves 3 large bottles loaded with dirt, water and slime. Then she told me: "When we got home we found that they were filled with coins. There was over $4,000 in coins (face value)."
On my leg back home I stopped in an area that had an advertised sale. I never made it there... but saw it in passing... another dump. But I followed a couple signs to two other dumps and then a strange little "estate sale" sign. By now it was near noon and good things are usually gone very early. She had an interesting silver shot cup with 99% Ag stamped on it. She wanted more than Iwould pay for it and there was noassurance it was silver. She told me she had a silver set that sold earlier. Of course.
Lesson: hit early and first any estate sales or moving sales.
