View Full Version : No "Thanks"

If there is a single feature of the forum software that provides real feedback to people posting here, it is the Thanks button. It's gone. I will assume that it is temporarily gone, and will be back.

Sounds like it's been hacked. We don't want that. We should bring back smites. :) The applaud/smite function really gives honest feedback because it's anonymous.

I think the big concern is the loss of posts. Lot's of posts missing.

No smite no thanks.

I think we should get at least the smite option back. It was like a tradition to smite the fuck outta new people for a week or so.

I worked hard to maintain a 2:1 "Thanks" ratio. I also made sure my thanks meant something, having given out only 120 or so in the last two years.

I think personal feedback can help posters grow. That's just my opinion. Gives some people a reality check.

If the thanks are anonymous, it's kinda hard to determine which posters are like minded. I know which people think like I do as much from the thanks as I do from their posts.

Hatha

That's the whole problem with the thanks feature though. You can only thank folks who you agree with. There's times I'd like to thank a post, even if I don't agree with that post, but you can't without everyone assuming you agree with it. Or...worse, you disagree with a poster in general, that guy's an asshole, yet he posts something you agree with, you thank him, then he assumes you agree with everything else he says.

If it was anonymous, the thanks feature would have less politics attached to it.

In a perfect design it would give you choices, such as.....

1. Cool post, I agree.
2. Not sure, let me think about it.
3. I respect your opinion but disagree.
4. You're fucked, nuff said.

Never anon and there would be a bar graph displaying your overall median score.

Usually someone else is more eloquant at posting what I'm "thinking" about a particular thread, so the "Thanks" feature has kinda been a way for me to just say, "I agree completely, thanks for posting". Life will go on :)

The thanks button is shorthand for 'i agree'. Saves a lot of needless verbiage in posts. We don't need a 'slap you' button because it is shorthand for gratuitous aggression. It's better to articulate why you disagree than to just register some vague hostility.

You know something, I was very proud of my Thanks tally. Now it is gone. The Thanks function let the contributor know whether others agreed with his views or at least appreciated the contribution. Feedback is a critical component of communication, especially over the internet with anonymous faceless folk. Whatever the MODs decide, some mechanism to provide feedback good and bad would enhance the forum. After all, all those record smites laid on Percival were critical to cluing folk in to his meme.

GSUS is more important now than ever before, as we enter the last days of this collapsing dollar-based epoch. We need eachother now more than ever before. Of all the sites I frequent, including ZeroHedge, Jesse's Cafe, Victory Report, Gold Eagle and Bob Chapman, GSUS is the one I call home and find the most informative, enjoyable and essential. I appreciate the insights, tips and advice offered here above all other sites.

I was very proud of my Thanks count too. It means something. It means people are reading what you're writing, and they are agreeing with whatever it is you're saying. It also shows the integrity of other posters, ala when you see a member with 7000 posts, and only 130 thanks, you know what's up.

in the context of 'thanks', i feel a need to look it up in different languages -

dank u - Dutch
merci - French
danke - German
grazie - Italian
obrigado - Portuguese
gracias - Spanish

conclusion - the Portuguese have a 4 syllable word for thanks, which is WAY to long ... but it could come in handy in Haiku. :)
