It most certainly can. There are many cases of people experiencing terrible loss yet finding renewed interest in life and gratitude for those things they previously took for granted. Many experiences relate that life prior to the loss paled in comparison to life after.

I think the phrase may not be universally applicable, but I think it works quite well with things like infections and difficult experiences...
