somebody at work gave my wife a big bag of red potato seedlings. looked good, sprouting, etc.

i plowed up part of the back meadow and planted 32 of them.

how much will this produce? did i just plant like 500 pounds of potatoes or what?

A friend of mine plants potatoes, I think he yields between 5 and 10 potatoes per seedling.

How did you plant them chad? Depth, spacing, fertilizer?

Try mounding around them as they grow to get a larger harvest. That's what my books suggest.

I'm surprised that people still have seed potatoes left. Even for Wisconsin, it should be late for planting potatoes.

I have not had a good crop of taters yet. One of my complete failures in gardening.

If you do have a good harvest, store them in your basement or root cellar in burlap at a minimum. If if is looking like a good harvest per plant, start pulling young spuds early before the plant dies.

Try to save some back for planting in the spring. Why spend more money?

5 to 1 if they take.
I have a lot better success with sweet potatoes, but I live in the south.

We are still learning. Year three on potatoes. You cut them up so you have an eye or two per seedling. Plop em in about 2"-3". After they are growing good you get in there and dig around to see what you can feel. If you are getting some little fellers, steal a few out for dinner. Then mound them up and they are supposed to grow up the mound. You should be able to steal the little potatoes all summer for cooking with and then in the fall you dig up the big boys. We didn't mound in the last two years. A 12*4 box of a variety of potatoes just planted and ignored then dug up was good for about 100 lbs. If you mound them it's supposed to really make them go, plus you get to eat them all summer.

Will report back later.

You should get 7 to 10 lbs per plant. If you dont have dirt to mound up around them, you can get a bale of straw and use it.
ADD: red potatoes can fairly well and hold their form. They also dehydrate good, and are good in stews.
