I got another silver quarter in my change yesterday.
It's not pretty but, again I heard it's distinctive sound when hitting the other coins.

Nice job! I haven't found a silver coin in my change for a long time now. It's weird how excited I get when I discover a silver coin, even though it's only worth a few bucks, lol.

I dug one up once. About 14 years ago, I was digging a ditch on a farm on Vancouver Island and found a mercury dime. I had no knowledge of gold/silver/fiat/TPTB at that time, but
I was extremely excited to have found that dime. I hid it away, not sure what it was, but knowing it was special. A few years later, I did some research on it and that's when I started
learning about what is really happening in the world.

Amazing to find real silver in change anymore. Last one I found was a 1964 dime in a coin jam in a friend's Coke machine. He was out of town a few days and asked me to watch after his pop machines. This one was in an Hispanic part of town where lots of Mexican immigrants lived. Must have been the kids raiding their folks' piggy bank.
I used to have a route of pay phones. Each coin box holds about $300 in nickels, dimes and quarters. I scanned the coins for a few years and never did find any silver coins. Amazing.

Score, ximmy!
seaurchin1 - That's a great story of how you came to learn about gold and silver (and what's going on in the world)!

Ironically, I found one in my change today too. it's a Cdn '68 so it's 1/2 silver only.

I mentioned this before, but my mother is a grocery checker and I taught her how to spot the Silver coins. She snatched up literally 23 troy ounces of junk silver in just one year of doing it. She just buys them at face value out of the register.

I haven't had any silver change this year, and only twice last year. And one of the times was my 13 year old. We were on our way to the beach for a surf sesh and he asked if we could stop so he could get a chocolate milk. He came out of the mini mart and said his milk was free as opened his palm and proudly showed me a '48 dime. At least he's listening to his Pop's crazy talk. Then, in November, I stopped by my watering hole for a beer and heard the song of silver in the change. At the time a quarter was over six bucks and the beer and tip cost nothing. And speaking of tips, I thought I'd drilled the lesson of 90% into the bartender's head. Oh well.

I've found three dimes since 2004. 2004 was when I started buying silver. That doesn't include some silver Canadian that was passed on from an aunt that passed on. I search every thing that passes through my hands, nickles, copper pennies and of course silver stays with me. The rest goes into a jug and gets turned to paper every two years or so.

I used to do that with the cheap coin bins at the coins shop.

Ha ha, a couple weekends ago I got a '69 Canadian quarter (even though I'm in the USA) and wondered if it was silver. But of course I looked it up and realized that '68 was the last year they made 50% silver coins up there. So close!

Yeah I think 68 is the only year that it is 50%. I believe all <= 67 is 90%.. I'll have to look it up

To my knowledge regarding 1968 quarters
If it is 50% silver, it should weigh 5.8319 grams; if it is nickel, it should weigh 5.0600 grams.
1968 dimes are indistinguishable from silver/nickel/copper
I believe 1967 quarters and dimes in proof sets are 80% silver and all other 1967 quarters and dimes are 50%.

Based on the sheer odds of this I'm guessing the real money failed the weight/density mechanism and was discharged back to the user.

Yeah, it could be 80%.... I do not have a scale that sensitive...

Nice score! Occassionally I will find a silver dime in those Coinstar machines. The machine rejects them since they have a different weight and I guess people just can't be bothered to retrieve a rejected dime.

Yeah, it is kinda nice but we're really only talking about ~ 5 bucks [or less]. If I saw a SML in my change, I'd really be happy.

It's not about the nominal value of the coin, it's about proving Gresham's Law. :p

Just so you know a silver/copper coin is not magnetic. The 68 coins that aren't silver and made of nickel are magnetic. Easy way to tell. How ever the only reason u would need a scale is to tell the difference between a 50 and an 80% coins like the bobcats. However the difference is barrely noticable and with wear practically impossible to tell the difference.
