View Full Version : $80 billion a year in food stamps and no one knows where it's going

Americans spend $80 billion each year financing food stamps for the poor, but the country has no idea where or how the money is spent.
Food stamps can be spent on goods ranging from candy to steak and are accepted at retailers from gas stations that primarily sell potato chips to fried-chicken restaurants. And as the amount spent on food stamps has more than doubled in recent years, the amount of food stamps laundered into cash has increased dramatically, government statistics show.
But the government won’t say which stores are doing the most business in food stamps, and even it doesn’t know what kinds of food those taxpayer dollars buy.

Coinciding with lobbying by convenience stores, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (http://gold-silver.us/topics/us-department-of-agriculture/), which administers the program in conjunction with states, contends that disclosing how much each store authorized to accept benefits, known as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), receives in taxpayer funds would amount to revealing trade secrets.
As a result, fraud is hard to track and the efficacy of the massive program is impossible to evaluate.
As the House debates the once-every-five-years farm bill, the majority of which goes to food stamps, there is a renewed and fervent call from a broad spectrum of camps that the information - some of the most high-dollar, frequently requested and closely held secrets of the government - be set free.

“We can’t release it based on federal rules. If it were up to us, I wouldn’t have a problem releasing the information. It’s taxpayer money,” said Tom Steinhauser (http://gold-silver.us/topics/tom-steinhauser/) with the division of benefit programs for the Virginia Department of Social Services (http://gold-silver.us/topics/virginia-department-of-social-services/).
The District (http://gold-silver.us/topics/district/) said it would be illegal to tell the newspaper how many food stamp dollars were flowing to each local vendor, but first offered to sell The Washington Times the information for $125,000.
“Why don’t you just pay the charges? Your paper has a lot of money,” said David Umansky (http://gold-silver.us/topics/david-umansky/), spokesman for the District (http://gold-silver.us/topics/district/)’s chief financial officer.

Told that the newspaper would not pay, the CFO’s office then said that only JP Morgan (http://gold-silver.us/topics/jp-morgan/), to which it contracted out operations, had access to the store totals and that the office had never looked at them. After six months of the local government attempting to extract the information from JP Morgan (http://gold-silver.us/topics/jp-morgan/), the District (http://gold-silver.us/topics/district/) finally said that releasing the information would be illegal.

States instructed not to tell
Maryland denied The Times’ request for data under the Freedom of Information Act, saying the information belonged to the federal government, which instructed states not to release it.
Legislation seemingly designed to protect the industry goes so far as to say that anyone who releases the amount of food stamp dollars paid to a store can be jailed.

Profiting from the poor’s taxpayer-funded purchases has become big business for a mix of major companies and corner bodegas, which have spent millions of dollars lobbying Congress (http://gold-silver.us/topics/congress/) and the USDA (http://gold-silver.us/topics/us-department-of-agriculture/) to keep the money flowing freely.
The National Association of Convenience Store Operators (http://gold-silver.us/topics/national-association-of-convenience-store-operator/) alone spends millions of dollars on lobbying yearly, including $1 million in the first quarter of this year.

as it's all electronic now, it would take about 1 day to do a database dump of everything.

I see that there's a record number of people with PhD's now on food stamps. And I know for a fact there are airline pilots on food stamps.

Two things happening, besides Hope and Change: Obama's economy is making a whole lot more good people poor. And food stamps (credit card, actually) are easier than ever to qualify for.

Just keep on Hoping and Changing!

I know where it goes, well at least where mine goes. It will go to anything edible and drinkable except alcohol.

That's it and nothing else. You can't convert the food dollars into cash or use it to buy anything but. Not at restaurants or cafeterias.

But if you're a Black or Mexican and produce 20 babies, you get a shitload of food stamps.

Here in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts one can see signs on many ATMs encouraging EBT cardholders to try them in the ATM.
They can get cash here, among other things.
It seems all invaders are given this card the minute they cross the border.

No you cant. The only thing you can get is your cash assistance with the card, no food cash.

Cash assistance is a very hard game to play if your a white person.

You can. You go buy high end steaks and similar stuff then sell them for 20-50% on the dollar out in the parking lot.

Pretty soon people will be able to use their EBT cards at McDonalds. If they lobby hard enough I'm sure it can happen.

Shouldn't Michelle be interested in these numbers for her Get Moving program? Probably but that program is more there to give the illusion that she's doing something. And I'm sure these numbers would be embarrassing. Billions and billions spent on funyuns and ice cream sandwiches.

I am much more concerned about what happens after the average disbursement won't buy a loaf of bread.

Actually guys, it's common to "sell" an EBT amount to someone else. I don't know what the "pawn" value is, but I know how it works. The one person gives the card and passcode to the other person, it get's used and then returned. No food changes hands, just money.

Every little trick has already been conceived. That's one of the jokes of going digital . . .

I would say it has become riot insurance for us proles. For .gov, food stamps are just another way to make people dependent on .gov.

On a net basis, it's a subsidy to Monsanto, ADM, and what may be called the agricultural industrial complex.

I do not want to be in this country in the event the EBT cards stop buying sufficient food. If they were to be shut off today, there would be riots by sundown. If there was hyperinflation, there would be riots by sundown. The best case may well be Latin-American style price inflation (10-20%) as it is more gradual, and we are seeing some of that already if ShadowStats is to be believed.
