I don't see a whole lot of difference between Obama and Romney. Assuming that Ron Paul is out of it and Obama or Romney is the president that takes us into total big-government marxism, where can we go and what can we do?

Well, there's Panama. Yeah, some of you think of dense rain forest, snakes, mosquitoes, yellow fever and the like. There's a lot of that out in the country, but the country has been busy growing up. In fact, Panama's banks are all financially really healthy. The population has been growing and construction and development has been happening while the USA has been in doldrums. Not to burst your bubble, and your mental images of what Panama must look like, check out Panama City...

Do the speak English (minor concern... I'm semifunctionally bi-lingual in Spanish)
Do they allow private ownership of guns? (The deal-breaker... all FREE men are ARMED men!)

Nearly everyone speaks English as well as Spanish. The US had military bases in Panama for many years starting with the construction of the Canal. Many of the doctors and lawyers went to school in the States. And there are rapidly-growing communities of gringos from the States now living in Panama. They use the US Dollar as their currency.

Guns? I haven't inquired, but have been told that guns are discouraged but you can get permits if you're a resident with a clean record. Panama is a true international country, with people from everywhere passing through Panama every day (thanks to the Canal and all the traffic it brings).

Cool. I'll do some research.

I went to Panama with my dad in 2008. There were parts that were highly developed, and parts that were beautiful and pristine. There are some really interesting islands on the Caribbean side called the San Blas islands where the native people used coconuts as money up until a few decades ago. When I was there, they used artfully woven cloth as money. Yes, almost everyone speaks English as well as Spanish (except in those areas like the San Blas islands where they've kept their native culture).

If you are interested in expatriating, check out escapeartist.com, expatexchange.com or other expat sites. Often there are people who will detail their experiences. I decided back in 2008ish that I don't want to be the new person in town when TSHTF. But hey, to each their own.

Panama is a tax haven which might account for it's solvent banks. It's also a US Protectorate or something isn't it? I need to dig out my CIA handbook thingy

If you moved then, you wouldn't be now.

From what I know of Panama, it is hot, but yes the canal there provides for most of the country.

They are growing.

My ex wife's sister lives there. she said it's nice in some parts, not so nice in others - just like any city. The countryside however, she says it's amazingly beautiful. She's been there for about 3 years, no complaints

I thought about that when I was writing it, but I think I would still be the "new person". Think about it. They've had their culture and their friends for a lot longer than a few years.

So you really think that Panama is safe? .....well...... I got news for you, that was my first indication that I should start getting ready for what is to come....When the US gave away the Panama canal China moved in right away and now they have taken over both ends of the canal......more Chinese business than ever in Panama......the Chinese government owns all of them and when they talk about helping another nation by openning anther company it only means that the country will now have more spys in place.........to read is to learn is to know, to be awared is to be prepare.

My Brother-In-Law moved down there last year. It's doing wonders for his health. His psoriasis doesn't act up unless he comes home. He's fishing and swimming pretty much every day. There's no real hunting so he hasn't bothered about guns. He says as long as you stay on the Pacific side, it's great. He's still trying to get his money out but he's doing it.

I have been to Panama on several occasions. The love of my life is from there.

Panama uses the American Dollar. The average hourly wage is approx. $1.25 an hour. Average Panamanian makes approx $400 a month.

My sweety and I rented a car after landing in Panama City. We traveled the back roads and all small towns we could on our 2 week exploration.

Panama City is booming and the prices for a apartments now are equivalent to those in Miami. There are some terrible places in Panama just as we have them here.

My wife said... We will not go into this neighborhood as it is very dangerous. Then she explained that we could go into one of the apartment buildings and throw a potato up through the stair well and it would come back down as french fries. Needless to say we did not stay in that neighborhood to long BUT you must pass through it to get to the Pan American Bridge that links to the rest of the country.

First time I was there, everyone starts honking their horn at you for no apparent reason. I was pissed off...How rude...Honk the horn at me??? It is the culture for everyone to honk for no reason. You can see a woman at the red light looking at the mirror putting on her make up with one hand while honking the with the other. The guys are just as bad. Reading the newspaper at the light and honking just for the hell of it. Also, the cars have some type of whistle which can immediately be activated when a beautiful girl or woman is walking on the street. It is like a wolf whistle and all the taxis have them. The Panamanian women start calling the Taxi driver's dogs and talk bad about their mothers....hahahaha... I also saw a man run up and touch a woman's derriere on the street. Big mistake. Everybody has an umbrella during the rainy season and she beat this guy without mercy and also said something bad about his mother. hahahaha.

I could go on and on about Panama. Americans and Europeans flock to the areas of David {pronounced Da' veed} Volcan, Boquette and the areas around the border to Costa Rica.

We have discussed a 2nd passport and the Panamanian Passport is the best to have in all of Central America and Panama. At least that's what the sweety says. She also reminds me that is it Central America and Panama. Panama is not considered a part of Central America.

Funny how this thread comes up now, just spent a hectic business trip over there including what seemed like one endless bus ride.

The economy is still smokin over there, I dunno know how exactly, but it is.

Panama city has that big city feel that I would typically steer away from, other than that I guess there must be locales where all the gringos go because I didn't see many. Though I stuck out in San Jose, David was even more so.

Latin Americans seem to be doing better economically as compared to Americans in the U.S. on the whole.

Many of the guys I met with as representatives in one way or another were Chano-manians, Chinese mixed breeds.

The buses...Oh God I forgot about the buses in the city. They are known as Diablo Rojo..{Red Devil} They are in competition with each other it seems and they race each other to the next stop to pick up passengers. It can be quite exciting at times. Thanks for the memory "Horn"!!

My wife told me about the time she lived there and Noriega was in power. She was in her early 20's when he was knocked out of power.

People couldn't wear white because it was a sign of rebellion..

Everyday at noon, traffic and all would stop. If the Noriega goons were not around, all the cars would stop and start blasting the horns. Mothers in the house would gather pots and pans and bang them to make noise. She said it was an erie sound and was the uttermost sign of rebellion they could do without being beaten or killed. She said Noriega hated this and would get on TV for 4 or 5 hours and raise H*ll about it.

I thought I heard talk about them widening the canal or something. Is that right?

I should have uploaded it a little larger. They had the inauguration of the widened canal today.

David on the west coast is even trashier, can't say I ever liked Panama or Panama city, it and Nicaragua go through some swing stages.

Nicalandia has some small friendly clean towns on the coast, but screw living there for me. cost for any convenience is even higher. San Juan del Sur would be a nice place to retire though with a bunch of dough.
