View Full Version : My Avatar (Vishnu) - and a message to our forum.

For those who have wondered, and I'm sure there are a few of you (I've received more than one PM asking):

My Avatar is of the Hindu God "Vishnu".

While it is true that I am not a Hindu (or, indeed, a believer in ANY religion I'm aware of), and I don't believe in supernatural beings, I did still choose it for a reason.

I'm pretty sure I changed to that Avatar right after I became an administrator.

Here's what Wikipedia says about Vishnu:

Vishnu (Sanskrit विष्णु Viṣṇu) is a popular Hindu god, venerated as the Supreme Being in the Vaishnava sect. Smarta followers of Adi Shankara, among others, venerate Vishnu as one of the five primary forms of God.

The Vishnu Sahasranama declares Vishnu as Paramatman (supreme soul) and Parameshwara (supreme God). It describes Vishnu as the All-Pervading essence of all beings, the master of—and beyond—the past, present and future, one who supports, sustains and governs the Universe and originates and develops all elements within. Vishnu governs the aspect of preservation and sustenance of the universe, so he is called "Preserver of the universe".

In the Puranas, Vishnu is described as having the divine colour of water filled clouds, four-armed, holding a lotus, mace, shankha (conch) and chakra (wheel). Vishnu is also described in the Bhagavad Gita as having a 'Universal Form' (Vishvarupa) which is beyond the ordinary limits of human perception or imagination.

In almost all Hindu denominations, Vishnu is either worshipped directly or in the form of his ten avatara, most famous of whom are Rama and Krishna. The Puranabharti describes each of these Dasavatara of Vishnu. Among the ten principal Avatara described, nine have occurred in the past and one will take place in the future, at the end of Kali Yuga. These incarnations take place in all Yugas in cosmic scales, the avatars and their stories show that god is indeed unimaginable, unthinkable and unbelievable. The Bhagavad Gita mentions their purpose as being to rejuvenate Dharma and vanquish negative forces, the forces of evil that threaten Dharma, as also to display His divine nature in front of the conditioned/fallen souls.

The Trimurti (English: ‘three forms’; Sanskrit: trimūrti) is a concept in Hinduism "in which the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified by the forms of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the maintainer or preserver, and Shiva the destroyer or transformer." These three deities have been called "the Hindu triad" or the "Great Trinity". Of the three members of the Trimurti, the Bhagavata Purana, which espouses the Vaishnavite viewpoint, explains that the greatest benefit can be had from Vishnu.

The part in BOLD is what I've attempted to be for and to this forum in my position as moderator and administrator.

If I've failed you, I can do but offer the most sincere of apologies, along with my word as a man of integrity that I will do better should providence choose to allow my continued participation in this community.

The "big one" is Vishnu. The blue color comes from the description of Vishnu in the vedic texts. As for the gender (from my limited understanding of Hindu beliefs) their higher level Gods are sexless, and deliberately depicted as androgynous. Other forum members please correct me on this point if I'm mistaken.

India is filled with some of the greatest intellects of the world. I am very serious about that. There are some brilliant people from India.

But look at what their culture has done for them. Look at what their religions have done for them.

Wearing an idol of Vishnu is not exactly what I would call a good thing for a nation or a forum.

I could say the same of European / Western culture since about 300 CE.

Don't paint with a broad brush and don't look from afar. If you want to analyze specific cultures, be sure to see the direct variances within them.

In Europe, the true Church was underground as the Roman church violently ruled the land. The true Church is composed of those washed in the sacrificial blood of Messiah and indwelt by the Spirit of God. Such walk with a supernature that wars internally against the sin nature until death. There is that restraining of will and submission to the will of God. The fruits of that Spirit are: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance

Where the true Church has been allowed to flourish, the blessings of God have been evident. When man turns to his sin nature, the blessings of God are withdrawn.

We are entering a zombie apocalypse because Amerika (and the world) have rejected God and the true Church once again.

Doom is in the air and this month you will all get a taste of the beginning of the end.

SGI actually had an interesting history where they split from priests.

They basically have a "President" is all, (is my understanding)

They actually take this "split" into account when regarding their faith.

According to Prof. M. Bumann, of the University of Lucerne, Switzerland, the cause of the split was the friction between conservatism and openness, hierarchy and democratization: "A spirit of openness, egalitarianism, and democratization pervaded the SG, embodying and giving new life to the idea of self-empowerment. In 1991, these liberalizing developments led to the split between the Japan-oriented, priestly Nichiren Shoshu and the lay-based, globalized SGI"..[64] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dka_Gakkai#cite_note-63) In an analysis of books studying the expansion of SGI after the split, Prof. Jane Hurst of Gallaudet University viewed the split as the result of conflict of interest: "lay members seeking religious support for their lives, priests seeking perpetuation of hierarchical institutions".

I sat in with them once a couple years back (5 or so),

and was under the impression they were incorporating the split into their way, or in other words, I guess in a some sort of sense

reducing Buddha into a continual life process, more or less. (Forget the actual details of what was mentioned there)

The priests were kaput as far as I knew.

The Bodhisattva

Various schools of Nichiren Buddhism give similar interpretation of the state of Bodhisattva, the path leading to Buddhahood, however SGI literature assigns this state also to non-Buddhist individuals of supreme compassion such as Jesus of Nazareth:“I believe that both St Francis and Jesus belong in what we Buddhist call the Bodhisattva World” [50] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dka_Gakkai#cite_note-49).
Another interpretation of the world of Bodhisattva in SGI relates to its connectedness with working for Human Rights[51] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dka_Gakkai#cite_note-50) and of being a World Citizen: “the bodhisattva provides an ancient precedent and modern exemplar of the global citizen”[ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dka_Gakkai#cite_note-51)
