A 12-year-boy is in extreme pain with blistering second degree burns all over his back after doing a ‘salt and ice challenge’ – the latest dangerous craze sweeping the internet.

The ill-advised stunt involves putting salt on bare skin then pressing ice on top of it. The combination causes a chemical reaction that burns the skin almost immediately.

The Pittsburgh boy, his twin brother and their friend learnt about the ‘challenge’ through Facebook and You Tube.

Last Friday night, the unidentified boy did the challenge as part of a dare, reported the Pittsburgh Post Gazette (http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/local/neighborhoods-city/boy-12-badly-injured-in-salt-and-ice-challenge-642561/).

Lying on his stomach, his brother and friend poured salt in the shape of a cross on his back before pushing ice onto it.

The challenge, which has become popularized largely through You Tube videos, is to see how long you can withstand the pain.

The boy had the ice on his back for a few minutes - resulting in such severe blistering burns that he needed hospital treatment and will be recovering for the rest of the summer.
He needs drug treatment which involves applying lotion four times daily for months and he cannot swim or go outside without a shirt on.

The boy’s mother has spoken out to warn others of the craze, 'I just really want parents to be aware that a lot of kids are doing this. They think it’s not their kid. They’re wrong.'

Officials at the West Penn Burn Center held a news conference after the incident to highlight the serious dangers of the game.

Dr Ariel Aballay described the injuries as similar to frostbite and warned the longer the ice was applied the more severe the injuries.

'The longer, the more serious the injury. This patient went for a few minutes, but there have been cases that went for six or seven minutes that resulted in third-degree injuries.'

Doctors initially believed that the boy would be scarred for life but are now hopeful his back will eventually heal without leaving marks.

I FULLY understand why these kids do this stuff.....

Look man life sucks and is BORING. There is no beauty in this world! There is no wonderment and amazement in the finer aspects of this planet. Dont even bother tuning into its incredible detail, its overabundance of rich life or its depth and color. This place sucks and there is nothing to do here. Ive had every single thing on planet earth handed to me on a silver platter, and its STILL NOT ENOUGH. I will eat cinnamon, burn salt into my skin, and plank my way into giving this existence some purpose!

PUKE.

What a great reason to regulate the internet! Kids can't think things through on their own and parents have no control, we need the government to do this for us, obviously!

Yeah, right. They all say Ron Paul is crazy. Everyone knows we need lots more government. Government knows far better how to spend our money, what we should eat, drink, watch on TV, and see on the Internet. Wait. Government's already doing that - and the muslims promise that when they take over, it will be 1000 times worse.

WTF are you talking about? Did you bother to read the posts immediately preceeding mine? Not that you care, but I was continuing comment on the topic as it's evolved. Suggest you go back and read the posts just prior to mine.

perhaps we should take the young man under our Collective G-S.us Wing and teach him safer ways to escape from the boredom of his existence than salt-ice burns.

we could teach him to Pop-Rivet his lips together.

we could show him how to use the Fresnel lens from a big-screen TV to burn pretty patterns into his skin.

young man just needs a little Guidance.

given that he was trying to etch a cross into his back - perhaps there is hope for him ?

Kids have always done stupid experiments, and dares when grouped together since the dawn of time. The jackass movies have popularized it more than ususal.

Buddy learned about science at least.

A teenager has died after shooting himself in the head during a game of 'Russian Roulette' with three friends.
Thorin Montgomery, 17, was the first to hold a loaded .38 caliber handgun to his head and pull the trigger.
The teenager collapsed in front of his horrified friends who called paramedics.
Montgomery was airlifted to hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Russian Roulette is a lethal game of chance in which a player places a single round in a revolver, spins the cylinder, places the muzzle against his or her head and pulls the trigger.
The game originated in Russia and featured in the one of the most famous scenes in cinema history in the film The Deer Hunter with Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken.
It is estimated that up to ten people a year die from playing the risky game.
Police in Largo, Florida, said Montgomery was with three friends, aged 19,18 and 16, on Friday night when they decided to play the deadly shooting game.

He described the scene as 'crazy' and said he was surprised to hear the teens were playing such a dangerous game.

'I'm shocked to find out they're stupid enough to play that game,' said the neighbor.
'Kids nowadays, with them playing with guns the way they do, there's no reason for that.'
