It's hard to think of France without thinking about wine. As part of a French plan to curb drunk driving within the country, France has become the first country to require all drivers to carry handheld breathalyzers in all vehicles. The law extends to tourists as well. The law went into effect on July 1 and was approved in March of 2011.
Safety advocates in the US are said to be watching France closely hinting at the possibility of trying to get something similar passed in the United States.

It's a horrible nuisance. You blow in it and if you don't do the hum part of it consistently you have to wait for it to reload and start again.
Then it randomly ask you to blow in it as your moving. You can stop or do it on the fly, but it still is a distraction and a major PITA.

When I was doing auto repair, I had a handful of customers with setups like this.
Major PITA, and a bit humiliating as well. Not to mention I'm sure I screwed up the process a few times... not sure if this caused the customer any legal problems...

They can legislate that every driver needs a breathlizer........... but they cant legislate every person needs to be a citizen.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point to this new law? Unless the breathalysers control the ignition to the car, it's going to be left in the glove box and ignored.

Yeah, but think of all the breathalysers that will be sold!

Not all anyway.
Can see it, cop stops someone and says look's like you have been drinking can I see your analyzer? Oh you do not have one? That gives the walking donut another item to arrest or write up the person stopped.
The only way to make it work on a global (state) level is having these things as part of the vehicle, no blow , no go!

EXACTLY !!
Plans for a nice retirement;
Step one - start a company that sells breathalyzers with unique specifications
Step two - lobby state and national legislatures on the dangers of dui and benefits of onboard breathalyzers (preferably use a gov't insider front man)
Step three - contribute to politician's campaign
Step four - have your candidate write law requiring breathalyzers in all cars based on your units specifications
Step five - obtain exclusive contract with car manufacturers based on the unique specifications that your breathalyzer has, while private owners are forced to retrofit their cars to comply with new law
Step six - move to a foreign country because of the ridiculous encroachment of big government while you live off the proceeds from your company

Back in the mid '70s GFCI's [ground fault circuit interrupters] came out. As soon as they were commercially available they were mandated in homes where the chances of being electrocuted were slightly higher (bathrooms, wet areas). This resulted in a commercial boon to manufacturers and electricians alike with the added advantage that you could no longer suicide yourself by throwing a toaster into the bathwater.

Unless the breathalysers control the ignition to the car
This is what they do. Its tied directly into the ignition and will prevent the vehicle from starting if its past a certain alcohol reading. It then will randomly ask for a reading as the vehicle is moving.
They download the usage of it. It has a network plug on it that plugs into a PC. Im sure if it was mandated on all new cars it would be satellite.
