Someone told me that when he was a kid, he'd have to bring something that he learned that day to the dinner table to share with his family. If he didn't learn anything, he would look a word up in the dictionary right before dinner, just so he'd have something to share. I always thought that was a cool idea. After hearing this, I kept a log of what I learned each day (which is either lost or tucked away somewhere in this house).

So, I am going to start with yesterday, because it was quite eye-opening for me. I am sure plenty of you knew this, so don't laugh at me, but I just learned it yesterday - that most of the (non-pork) processed food in your pantry is "Kosher". There are several dozen (hundreds?) of Kosher symbols that appear on everything.

I was at Heimdhal's house, having some super awesome and absolutely not Kosher smoked pork when he told me about this Kosher nonsense, which I also learned and am completely convinced is a tax. I picked up the BBQ sauce on the table, yep, Kosher. I looked at the baby food on the table, yes, it was Kosher too. I stared at the corn chip bag for a really long time and couldn't find the symbol, but Heimdhal found it - yep, Kosher. I went around to everything I saw laying on the counter, and had to resist actually digging into his pantry. I really wanted to though. The only container that I found that was not Kosher was the baked beans, and that was because it contained pork.

As to what those markings mean:
The letter "K" simply means "Kosher." Kosher, in Hebrew, means fit or proper, and is generally used to describe foods that are prepared in accordance with special Jewish dietary laws. These laws are stringent and almost incomprehensible to those not versed in them.
The small "u" in a circle or ("OU") stands for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations and shows that the food underwent rabbinical supervision in its preparation. (An "OUD" marking shows that the package contains dairy products, while an "OUM" indicates the presence of meat.)

"Parve" (also "pareve") is Yiddish for "neutral." The presence of this word on packaging signifies that the contents of the package contain neither milk nor meat and thus can be combined with other ingredients in recipes. (Jewish dietary law forbids the mixing of meat and dairy, thus a packaged food that contained cheese could not be combined with, say, hamburger.)

This variety of markings used on packaged foods alert consumers that items contained therein either meet the strict dietary constraints imposed by Judaism on its followers or that the contents of the package can be mixed with other foods or can touch them. Not all Jews keep kosher, nor even among those who do are the strictures always adhered to rigorously, but those determined upon being truly pious are aided in this endeavor by the presence of those markings. Kosher certification companies do charge for this service, which is the backbone of the "secret tax" claim it costs money to obtain and maintain kosher certification, thus this is an extra expense a manufacturer must bear if he's determined upon having that certification. Where the rumor and reality part ways, however, is where the money goes. Fees paid to kosher certification companies go to keeping those businesses afloat with the profits siphoned off by those companies' owners; they do not flow off into some special Jewish fund used to advance Zionist causes. These are businesses, not charities, and those who run them do so with every expectation of making a living, in the same manner that someone who owns a hardware store does so with the notion of making enough from the endeavor to support himself and his family.

Does certification add to the price of a product? Certainly, but the amount is miniscule, especially compared to the advertising, packaging, shipping, research, testing, admin and finance-related costs, and a myriad of other components that contribute to the process of bringing a product to market or making it better appeal to consumers. One might as well rail against the costs associated with selecting the ink colors and style of lettering used on a package it's all legitimate business expense, even though no one ever rails against the "Secret Red Ink Conspiracy" or rants about the "Helvetica Font Tax."

Each of the two companies, as well as most others, have 1-800 telephone numbers printed on their packages for consumers to call in case they have any questions about their products. When we asked the Proctor & Gamble representative what the (U) meant on their Folgers Coffee container, she asked us to wait until she consulted with her supervisor. She came back and informed us that the mark meant that the coffee was “certified kosher”. We than asked her how and who certified the coffee to be “kosher” and whether it cost any money to do so. She refused to answer these and other questions. She suggested that we write to their Corporate Public Affairs Department. We than called the Clorox Corporation to ask what the (U) meant on the package of their Glads plastic sandwich bags and she also said that the (U) meant that the plastic bags were “kosher” but refused to answer questions concerning payments the Clorox Corporation has to make in order to be able to print the (U) on their products.

I certainly can't argue with you about Snopes. The site is probably Kosher too.
But they did say there is a charge to certify all these foods, which is the same as a tax to me.
It is amazing that all the food manufactures do/pay this to satisify only 2% of the population.

What I learned today is that olive oil worked into my fingers helps remove Red Guard--a rubbery pepto pink, slimy substance which turns fire engine red after it dries, waterproofing brush applied product-- from my fingers and nails etc., in particular. I just got inside form doing a bunch of work, and I was mulling this thread over. Something about it rubs me the wrong way.

K-os, I remember you from a long time ago. Wasn't your old handle "Accelerate" in leet speak, or some other leet speak name?
We talked in depth about the Kosher tax and the multitude of kosher symbols. After thinking about it, I realized that there is no way you shouldn't have already known all this, and as much as it pains me to say this, now I am finding a seed planted in my head from the Magnes tree.

Didn't really learn anything new today but i relearned that Jack Russell terriers are notoriously territorial even when they are off their own territory.

I took mine out to the farm today, big mistake. Anything that moved they went absolutely crazy over barking like wild dogs, grabbing a part of the truck seat with their teeth and violently shaking their heads.

I drove over to where Seth has his bloodhounds chained by the bale stack. I had just opened a cold beer and was ready to take a hit when one of my dogs heard the bloodhounds howl and saw them. He bit down hard on my

beer can and shook his head it hit the roof and beer started shooting foam outta several holes in the can totally soaking me and the interior cab of the truck.

When it landed in my lap there was just enough beer left in the can to make me look like i totally pissed my pants.

I'll never ever take those dogs intentionally where other dogs are ever again.

Back on topic, what I learned today, was getting the chance to talk to a wall street investment person, first hand. I learned, or much rather confirmed, that all those guys do is chase the bonus. It's all about the bonus, and they gamble people's investments away trying to maximize it. Some of those guys, even young guys starting out, were getting 500K bonuses. Greed and money is the root of the problem.

The other thing I've learned, over the past few days, is just how fantastic solar really is. I've been completely off the grid, and my solar panels keep up with all my electrical demands. I am overjoyed, what a great thing to have.

Unless he's talking about some kind of pressure sewer, which is unlikely since that would be rather large sizes for even a subdivision sized pressure sewer, it's pretty much bunk as Horn has pointed out. His explanation makes no sense. Then again "mechanical" engineer is mentioned and not "civil" engineer. Sizing sewer pipes is nothing I've ever seen being done by mechanical engineers. That's the job of civil engineers. I was in that line of work for nearly 20 years so i know a little. Typically with sewers, a larger diameter allowed more volume at shallower slopes for each run. In a gravity system "velocity" really isn't even a factor unless it's a steep line coming into a manhole, in which allowances are made like an outside drop of some kind so you don't just have crap shooting across the manhole. I take it we're discussing a residential line out to a main though, in which case, unless you've got a huge house, probably wouldn't be greater than 4" anyways. So it's pretty much a mute point. Just need to pay attention to the slope, which a contractor should know how to do anyways. No engineer needed.

Um yeah, that isn't going to work most likely. Regardless, you'd always spec a size bigger in most cases to be safe, but a 4" line for an apartment building sounds like a stinky mess waiting to happen. To put it in perspective, most subdivision culdesacs serve maybe a dozen to two dozen lots and almost always start with at least an 8" main and go up from there as the amount of lots being served goes up down the line. Something like , 4" service from house out to a drop wye into the 8" main then on down the line thru manholes being increased in size as it goes along, to 10", to 12", etc., up to large 24" lines into treatment facilities, etc.. Of course this all depends on what your local public works has in their specs. Some municipalities might let you get away with something smaller, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

That's a simplification, but really a "civil" engineer should be the one figuring it out. The public works department in the city i used to work in wouldn't have accepted a "mechanical" engineers stamp on a set of sewer or water plans. Mind you I got out of that business 5 years ago, but I'm sure it hasn't changed much.

Some info. on shit or non-shit gravity flow.

While it is better for your pipe to flow at least half full or "full of shit" (especially in shit's case) for cleaning the pipe, never ever let shit come close to terminal velocity.

You need to offset the pipe to horizontal every 4 stories to prevent "terminal velocity shit".

I like you, I think you are a very valuable asset to this forum. And while I don't follow all the details of the forum back and forth drama, I still see enough of it.

I would like to say that Kos is not the enemy. I've met her, she has told me about mayhem, I'm not going to betray her confidence but it's nothing to worry about. Seriously.

We have to pick our battles in life, and I don't see this one as one worthy of fighting. Absolute worse case scenario mayhem is a high level CIA operative, and Kos gives him all the juicy details of what goes on here. But big whoop this forum is PUBLIC and ANYONE can read ANYTHING ANY OF US TYPE. So that's why I don't see what the big deal is.


You have done very good work in the past sniffing out trolls, you have a knack for it that is uncanny. But it has turned from troll hunting into witch hunting, and I think (other than a few of the people who have joined in the last few months) this forum is pretty clear of outright trolls at this point this full on assault just drives people away. Most people think that the silver in U.S. coins ended in 1964, but this isn't true. The Half Dollar coin had silver in it until 1970. Many people spend the Half Dollars from 1965 to 1970, or sells them in rolls of halves they take to the bank, not realizing they are 40% silver.


I don't receive many half dollars in change to begin with, but I didn't know* that years 65-70 has 40% silver in them. Sweet!

I like you, I think you are a very valuable asset to this forum. And while I don't follow all the details of the forum back and forth drama, I still see enough of it.

I would like to say that Kos is not the enemy. I've met her, she has told me about mayhem, I'm not going to betray her confidence but it's nothing to worry about. Seriously.

We have to pick our battles in life, and I don't see this one as one worthy of fighting. Absolute worse case scenario mayhem is a high level CIA operative, and Kos gives him all the juicy details of what goes on here. But big whoop this forum is PUBLIC and ANYONE can read ANYTHING ANY OF US TYPE. So that's why I don't see what the big deal is.


You have done very good work in the past sniffing out trolls, you have a knack for it that is uncanny. But it has turned from troll hunting into witch hunting, and I think (other than a few of the people who have joined in the last few months) this forum is pretty clear of outright trolls at this point this full on assault just drives people away. I'd venture to say that at least 1/4 of the people who came here initially from GIM have left, I'm glad some of them are gone, but sad about others.

I say lets let it mellow out around here, let the waters settle and if in 6 months some outright trolls (like joe king or antonio) become obvious I will gladly back you up and purge them.


I have said all of this and more to Magnes in multiple PM's. I wash my hands of it all. I don't believe K-os is an agent, and I don't believe the "Cali gang" is anything more than a group of internet posters who enjoy chatting with each other.

Mayhem is real, Joe King and others are real, but I think our forum is pretty clean of agents right now, other than the quiet ones.

Also, based on Magnes's requirememts for a personal attack, I suppose I should have been temp-banned a number of times for my blatant attacks on Book, while he was here and after his ban.

Imo, the worst kind of personal attack is slander and telling lies about another person. There is no honor in that, there is no integrity, all that is shown is that person's true colors. I learned that any electronic device over 400 buxx get the extended warranty because all high end devices are manufactured to virtually self destruct after a certain period of time so companies are guaranteed repeat sales by hook or by crook makes no difference profit is everything quality be dammed.

Get a warranty and fight tooth and nail to make them honor it when their crap product dies

Twisted are you technically inclined? If so you probably can find a new or working screen on the net. Plus the instructions/videos on how to repair your laptop. Screens are easy to replace on most laptops.
