fuckin' molecular scanners.
Makes Minority Report look like fucking Candyland.
http://gizmodo.com/5923980/the-secret-government-laser-that-instantly-knows-everything-about-you
Within the next year or two, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will instantly know everything about your body, clothes, and luggage with a new laser-based molecular scanner fired from 164 feet (50 meters) away. From traces of drugs or gun powder on your clothes to what you had for breakfast to the adrenaline level in your body—agents will be able to get any information they want without even touching you. And without you knowing it.
The technology is so incredibly effective that, in November 2011, its inventors were subcontracted by In-Q-Tel (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/GeniaPhotonics/prweb8922932.htm) to work with the US Department of Homeland Security. In-Q-Tel is a company founded "in February 1999 by a group of private citizens (http://www.iqt.org/about-iqt/history.html) at the request of the Director of the CIA and with the support of the U.S. Congress." According to In-Q-Tel, they are the bridge between the Agency and new technology companies.
Their plan is to install this molecular-level scanning in airports and border crossings all across the United States. The official, stated goal of this arrangement is to be able to quickly identify explosives, dangerous chemicals, or bioweapons at a distance.
The machine is ten million times faster—and one million times more sensitive—than any currently available system. That means that it can be used systematically on everyone passing through airport security, not just suspect or randomly sampled people.

Above: The Genia Photonics' Picosecond Programmable Laser scanner is capable of detecting every tiny trace of any substance on your body, from specks of gunpowder to your adrenaline levels to a sugar-sized grain of cannabis to what you had for breakfast.

from the link:
Meanwhile, In-Q-Tel states that "an important benefit of Genia Photonics' implementation as compared to existing solutions is that the entire synchronized laser system is comprised in a single, robust and alignment-free unit that may be easily transported for use in many environments… This compact and robust laser has the ability to rapidly sweep wavelengths in any pattern and sequence." [PDF (http://www.geniaphotonics.com/publications/technical-notes/2012/04/standoff-explosive-detection/download/)]
So not only can they scan everyone. They would be able to do it everywhere: the subway, a traffic light, sports events... everywhere.
How does it work? The machine is a mobile, rack-mountable system. It fires a laser to provide molecular-level feedback at distances of up to 50 meters in just picoseconds. For all intents and purposes, that means instantly.
The small, inconspicuous machine is attached to a computer running a program that will show the information in real time, from trace amounts of cocaine on your dollar bills to gunpowder residue on your shoes. Forget trying to sneak a bottle of water past security—they will be able to tell what you had for breakfast in an instant while you're walking down the hallway.
The technology is not new, it's just millions times faster and more convenient than ever before. Back in 2008, a team at George Washington University (http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/02/07/us-laser-detector-idUSN0734345320080207) developed a similar laser spectrometer using a different process. It could sense drug metabolites in urine in less than a second, trace amounts of explosive residue on a dollar bill, and even certain chemical changes happening in a plant leaf.
If Genia Photonics' claims pan out, this is will be an incredible leap forward in technology. And one with staggering implications.
Observation without limits There has so far been no discussion about the personal rights and privacy issues involved. Which "molecular tags" will they be scanning for? Who determines them? What are the threshold levels of this scanning? If you unknowingly stepped on the butt of someone's joint and are carrying a sugar-sized grain of cannabis like that unfortunate traveler currently in jail in Dubai (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-512815/Briton-jailed-years-Dubai-customs-cannabis-weighing-grain-sugar-shoe.html), will you be arrested?
And, since it's extremely portable, will this technology extend beyone the airport or border crossings and into police cars, with officers looking for people on the street with increased levels of adrenaline in their system to detain in order to prevent potential violent outbursts? And will your car be scanned at stoplights for any trace amounts of suspicious substances? Would all this information be recorded anywhere?

Sure looks antiquated by today's standards.

Looks like it's a really fast mass spectrometer. It might be cheap too.

Nah, that's just how test equipment looks.

I'll believe it when I see it.
The last RFID system I installed had a range of about 1 inch. It was a passive system though as it identified carriers that passed through a 400 degree oven. The technology might be touted but lots of exaggerations take place.

I agree, just like defense contractors oversell their weapons that almost always fall short of their expected accuracy and reliability. I can't imagine that ambient temperature, wind and dust particles would have no affect on the results of this device. Follow the money, chances are a bunch of insiders will make a bundle on a lucrative gov't contract. There never seems to be any reprocussion when these things fail to work as described

It doesn't have to work as advertised. People just have to think it works as advertised. Then the Govt can just make shit up based on their productivity targets. Today we are confiscating ....... anything we feel like...... lets intimidate someone with the prospect of being charged with drug trafficking offenses and while they are shitting themselves, we will steal their stuff. They will be so relieved that we let them go they won't realise/complain we took their shit. IF they do, we'll lock em up for a couple weeks and then push them out the door.

Exactly, I was thinking the very same thing. They could use some false flag setups where they have a perp get caught with the goods on him, either planted or a decoy. Big trial lots of press coverage, big build up and we the sheople will believe every word.
In reality they have a box that they can then use to convict anyone they want to.
Brought to you by those famous people as rodin likes to call them "Hoaxes are us".

Most likely, it will foment reasonable suspicion with false positives.

Two things:
1) I plan on staying MUCH FARTHER away from airports than 164 feet! ;D
2) If this device is as sensitive as they claim, then YOU can claim that you brushed against somebody else in the airport and the detected residue is theirs.

I was scanned and this is what happened. I'm not surprised one bit.

If that fucking thing scanned me and found out everything about me it would explode, machine equivelent of a brain aneurysm, I'm not worried in the least.

It's kinda funny, but the sensitivity for cocaine would have to be turned down, so that it would only detect above a threshold amount, otherwise, the damn thing would go off for every person with an FRN in their pocket.

What sucks is that we're kinda joking about it. But at the end you have to appreciate the genius and at the pure fucking evil that TPTB have done to get to this point.
I mean seriously. Think about the thought that it took to fucking get to this point were at.

You give them FAR too much credit.
At least a box of rocks won't do anything against its own best interests!

You should do some search on the events that led up to passing the Expatration Act ... An Act for the protection of Americans in Foreign States.
Congress actually sent an Army captain over to Ireland. He was intercepted by the British (around 1866) in the middle of the Atlantic and held for attempting to get the Irish to rebel (not a far journey for them). This leads to a bunch of petitions being sent to Congress to get the president to protect Americans in foreign states. These were read on both floors of congress and can be found in the congressional globe. All for cover to pass a law to protect freed slaves from the nasty southern states.

Yessir. Normal minds would not even concieve of such a device, let alone find a way to practically impliment it.
It is the product of sick and twisted minds. Some want to be left alone others want to control every aspect of every aspect. This device was created by the latter. Evil bastards. I'm getting sick if this Sci-Fi type, we can hear what you're thinking and send a drone with Hellfires and a 50mm cannon to your house and fucking put you down like a Chineese daughter type shit.

Oh my god, dude... that phrase is so twisted and wrong... so cynical... so applicable to this fucked up world...
It's perfect! ;D
