I would say time of day might be the key. Right after they are roosting for the night.

I will check mine one of these days for the purrr.

besides the normal contented clucking sound, and the loud squawking sound, which can mean they want food, and the very occasional purring, one of them also makes a higher-pitched 'trilling' sound - but only when they are feeding, as a group.

i'm not sure if it means, "hmm, fresh cow guts", or, "stay away from my cow guts", but overall it is sort of a happy sound.
