OMAHA, Neb. - An Omaha man's apartment is infested with venomous spiders thought to be brought in by the hot summer temperatures.

Dylan Baumann said he has been catching brown recluse spiders in his apartment near 77th and Howard streets for four months.

"I saw them crawling across my walls, crawling along my floor boards and saw it crawling by my foot," Baumann said.

Brown recluse spiders are not aggressive, but they could be harmful due to their venomous bite. Out of the 200 species of spiders found in Nebraska, the black widow and brown recluse are considered the most dangerous.

Dennis Ferraro at the Douglas County Extension Office said the higher number of spiders and bugs in general is likely due to the weather.

"We virtually did not have a cold winter this winter, and the hotter temperatures that we're having would probably allow for more reproduction," Ferraro said.

Baumann said he planned to move out of the apartment, but not until September. In the meantime, Baumann said he is trying to co-exist with the spiders by taking precautions like pushing the bed away from the wall and shaking out clothes and shoes before putting them on.

"It's terrifying just thinking that might happen to me," Baumann said.

The brown recluse spider is rare but has been showing up more in Omaha.

I fucking hate spiders.

Typically small children fear spiders more than adults because to a small child, a spider looks larger and more threatening than it does to a fully grown adult. However, I've researched that adults who suffer from stunted growth or growth hormone deficiency retain this fear of spiders because, like the children, spiders look larger and more menacing to a smaller person.

madfranks,
perhaps it is more menacing when a spider is charging an large object (me) when in fact they may be surprised and seeking a hiding place.

Yours truly had a 50c sized one charge me very rapidly in the kitchen night before last and it was moving so rapidly across the lineoleum, I almost missed it with my size 12 boot.

I don't know who/which was more surprised...it or me. (I almost typed "him" but I don't know how to determine a spider's gender when I'm trying to squash it.) It was brown and all I could think of was the stories of deadly brown spider bites.

The wolf spiders in my area get huge. I'll try and snap a picture this year but around the fall they are larger than a Kennedy 50 cent piece legs and all.

The good news, is there's an easy fix for this affliction in adults. Get a big jacked up truck, train dogs to attack, and then get on the internet, vent and blame all frustrations on illegal immigrants.

Man, that's a creepy dream.

Spiders don't bother me so much, but moths, or anything flying next to my ear flips me out. I had a bad experience with a moth that flew into my ear. He crawled inside my ear as I was trying to swat him away. Talk about torture, it sounded like a helicopter inside my head. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. When I walked into the ER, they thought I was on drugs. The nurse took a look, her face went white, and she ran out of the room. Finally a doc came in and killed the damn thing, and flushed it out of my ear.

After that, any bug that flies near my ear, can't help it but I completely lose it. That's earned some laughs from folks who happen to witness it.

I don't mind spiders, but I had an encounter with this spider in Nicaragua . . . and he scared the crap out of me. His leg span was probably 9 inches or so. Eeeek.3272

I finally figured out how to post a full size image. :) That's what I learned today.

Why are the black widows being replaced with brown widows? Race mixing or illegal immigration?

Has anyone ever considered getting a spider as a pet? An old buddy of mine wanted to get a particular one, a bird eating spider. Any spider that eats birds, sort of defies nature's food chain in a way, so I thought, but I went down to the pet shop to check it out with him. The spider just sat in his cage, with his fangs showing and venom dripping from them. Apparently, the bird eating spider is very aggressive too. If it gets out of it's cage, it hides somewhere and if you walk by it, it will attack you. I told my buddy, we'd drink beer at my place if he got one.

train dogs to attack

CLEARLY you don't get it about the SPORT of Schutzhund, the primary objective in this DOG TRIAL SPORT is to train OBEDIENCE. Any helper/decoy/agitator worth their salt will NOT work with ANYONE who doesn't have obedience as their primary goal and instead merely wants to train their dogs to 'attack'. I find cops are the absolute worst in this regard 'cause the cops I've entered *think* they get it about K-9s/'attack dogs' yet they are scared shitless when a completely harmless dog approaches them to greet them and give them some love they end up shooting it dead - which we've had three cases here locally in the past four months and one very nearly shot my female last year, the FRIENDLIEST and MOST LOVING dog you'll ever get to see [she's actually Enzo's littermate but with long ears and long tail, she looks like a black hound dog] when she came bounding around the corner with her tennis ball in her mouth wanting to say "Hi!! I'm Abby!! Let's play ball!!".

There are quite a few spiders that have the same or similar "necrotic" venom as a Brown Recluse.
Tiny crab spiders. I was bitten by one once that caused a small hole next to one of my knuckles.
Have you ever seen a slow moving spider that glues sand to it's body? That's what bit me. It didn't
hurt at all. I guess it was too small, but it wouldn't heal. It just kept getting deeper and deeper
for months. Wound up about half the diameter of a dime and a quarter inch deep. Very strange wound.

Question: Is a Daddy Longlegs Venomous, and Can It Bite Humans?
I've heard that daddy longlegs are extremely venomous, but they can't bite humans because their fangs are too short to penetrate the skin. Is that true?

Answer:
First of all, there are actually three kinds of critters called daddy longlegs. The common name daddy longlegs is most often used to describe Opiliones, aka harvestmen. Opiliones are arachnids, but not spiders. They have no venom glands at all, and are absolutely not venomous. The nickname daddy longlegs may also refer to a crane fly, which is a true fly and a member of the order Diptera. Crane flies do not pose a threat, either.

Sometimes, the name daddy longlegs is used for another group of arachnids, the spiders of the family Pholcidae. These spiders are also called cellar spiders.

Cellar spiders do have venom glands. However, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever to confirm that their venom can harm a human being. Not a single documented case exists of a person being bitten by one and having an adverse reaction.

Pholcid spiders do have short fangs, but not any shorter than other spiders that have been known to bite humans. The cellar spider's fangs are similar in structure to those of a brown recluse spider, which we know can and does bite humans. Again, there is no evidence or proof to the claim that their fangs are too short to bite a person.

In fact, the show Mythbusters tackled this daddy longlegs legend back in 2004. Host Adam Savage subjected himself to a cellar spider bite, proving that the daddy longlegs spider is indeed capable of breaking human skin. The results? Savage reported nothing more than a very mild, short-lived burning sensation. Analysis of the daddy longlegs' venom revealed it's nowhere near as potent as venom from a black widow spider.

So, you really don't need to worry about daddy longlegs, of any variety.

so, theoretically, Daddy Longlegs could be considered a survival food.

you would need a lot of them though.
