I would like the opinions of those here on the best AK. Probably in the $600 range?

Bulgarian SLR, not sure if you can still get them new?
Barrel was hyper true on those, and receiver milled and weighted perfect..

Seems like you made a decent choice. From all I've heard in the AK circles, its similar to a saiga thats been converted, so you certainly didnt do BAD by any means. Definintley better than bottom of the barrel.
Learn it well and practice, practice, practice. It will serve you very well, I have no doubts.

Same here.
Thanks H! I'm glad to hear it! When I first called the store he said it was a saiga but when I called back with more questions I got a different more helpful person. I can't wait to shoot it and it sure is purdy!

I bought some ammo there, 7.99 for a box of 20. Is that a good price? I have no idea so just curious. I guess it may depend on the brand which I also know nothing about, they are silver bear.

Not at all for steel case.
Ammoman has it delivered for 239 per 1000rnds

This may vary in different parts of the country but I have NEVER seen a good deal on ammo in a store.

As LuckyStrike said, no, thats a horrible price.
YOu also need to figure out what type of ammo you want to use. If this is a "go to" gun, (SHTF/combat/etc) tyou'll want some good military ammo, which right now of course means Yugoslavian m67 or Bulgarian M8.
If its just for range use and you dont want to fiddle with cleaning corrosive ammo, you can get wolf/tula/bear ammo for about .23-.25 cents a round, or just under 5 bucks for 20 rounds.
7.99 is about twice what it should cost.
Watch out for American made brass case stuff, often times they use an inappropriate diameter bullets (.308 vs .311). Some of the american companies are remedying this, so its getting better, but it can still be iffy.

Whats the significance of a chrome line hammered forged barrel?
I'm seeing this in the description of some of these new AK types.
Is it something that's always been there?

Chrome line is first and foremost intended for durability of the rifling and to stop corrosion of the barrel from corrosive ammo. It is a nice feature to have, but it is NOT necessary. If the gun you are looking at has it, it is worth it. If its going to cost significantly more, you just simply need to be more vigilant with the cleaning after you shoot corrosive ammo.
This is of course my opinion based on a considerably amount of experience shooting both chrome lined and none chromed guns. It is a hottly debated subject, however.

Some stuff i read said there was slightly less (1/4") or so accuracy with chrome lined.
I would say in a semi-auto you might as well throw two more bullets at the target... :)
Anywho,
I would think a Good judge of an any AK style weapon is barrel first,
as most weapons manuf. would not surround a crisp barrel with shoty workmanship.
