John Foster Dulles

Who was he: John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State during the Eisenhower Administration from 1953 to 1959 and a major advocate of the US taking an aggressive foreign policy position against the communist (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=1900');) threat. Dulles was involved in supporting the French after World War II in retaining their control of Indochina as well as overthrowing the legitimate Mossadegh government in Iran (Operation Ajax) to install the Shah.
As Secretary of State, he advocated a strong military deterrent policy against the Soviet Union, even urging the US to promote the liberation of communist nations away from Soviet domination and control.
Background: John Foster Dulles was born on February 25, 1888 in Washington, DC (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2633');) and attended the usual elite schools and career choices, as did his younger brother, Allen Welsh Dulles (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2531');). He went to public school in Watertown, NY, graduated from Princeton in 1908, then to George Washington (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2908');) Law School. After school he joined the globalist law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell and specialized in international law. To his credit, rather than avoid military service like most of the Anglo-American (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=956');) elites, Dulles did at least attempt to join the US Army during World War OnIe but was rejected due to a medical condition and became a major on the War Industries Board.
Woodrow Wilson (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=3032');) appointed Dulles to the prestigious position of legal counsel to the American delegation at the Versailles Peace Conference. Unlike most of the conference participants and nations out to steal the wealth of Germany so the nation would never again challenge the economic supremacy of the British Empire over Europe, Dulles argued against imposing harsh reparations on a defeated Germany. Revenge against a defeated foe, when there was little honor or right on either side of the conflict, could come back against the Allies, he maintained.
John Foster Dulles led the law firm's association and sometimes support for Germany after Hitler (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2583');) became Chancellor, although this was strongly opposed by his brother Allen and other junior partners in the firm. Some writers such as Karlheinz Deschner have suggested Dulles helped transfer over a billion US dollars from wealthy individuals to the Nazi Party but we will leave this for others to explore.
The firm of Sullivan & Cromwell closed their Berlin office in 1935, although they later claimed falsely the year was 1934, as the firm attempted to distance itself from the activities of John Foster Dulles.
Dulles also later tried to rehabilitate his earlier pro-Hitler stance, as he had often begun cables to German clients with "Heil Hitler." In 1944, when Germany's defeat was assured, as foreign policy expert to presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewy Dulles promoted the Republican Party position plank supporting a Jewish (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=722');) commonwealth in Palestine.
Dulles attended the 1945 San Francisco Conference that established the United Nations (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=1848');) and helped to draft the preamble to the UN Charter. Another side of Dulles was his strong religious (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=854');) beliefs and although he was a hawk and engaged in brinkmanship even to the edge of nuclear war with the Soviets, he was opposed to the US atomic attacks on an already defeated Japan.
Dulles was involved with the liberal National Council of Churches, the Chairman of the Board for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a founding member of the Council on Foreign Relations (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=1937');) and the Foreign Policy Association and a long-time Trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2539');), from 1935 to 1952. In 1954, he was named Time magazine's Man of the Year and in 1959 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
John Foster Dulles died at Walter Reed Hospital on May 24, 1959 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The Washington Dulles International Airport outside of DC is named after him as well as a central Berlin road, which was renamed the John-Foster-Dulles-Allee in 1959.
If ever a historical novel is written about the Anglo-American Axis and their 20th Century wars, secret banking activities and their attempt to achieve global governance (javascript:showWindow(500,800,'/floatWindow.cfm?id=2045');), the two Dulles brothers could be the central characters as they were involved in every major international intrigue of the 20th Century
