I just stumbled on this today. I did not realize that there were so many benefits to turmeric.
20 Health Benefits of Turmeric
Published on October 1, 2007
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.
The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease.
Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:
1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.
7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.
17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.
Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.
Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.

Turmeric mixed with a few drops of coconut oil, put on an open wound will speed healing. The cuts or burns I have used it on did not scar and healed in a matter of a few days compared to weeks.

Read somewhere, Dr. Andrew Weil maybe ? ? ?, that tumeric needs to be consumed along with pepper, to unlock maximum absorption/healing properties.
I don't understand how it can be helpful to detoxifying the liver, but not if one has bile obstruction. Perhaps a medical type could weigh in? The liver doesn't make bile, the gallbladder does. But if one has cirrhosis, does this mean that consuming tumeric isn't a good idea for them to incorporate this spice?

I recently found that I have non Alcoholic Fatty Liver and when I started taking Turmeric and I would eat certain foods, would make my urine smell extremely rank. However, I continued taking the turmeric thru my cleanse process and have a much happier liver now!

If one were to try to get tumeric/curcumin through curry foods (India & SE Asia foods), which variety has the goods? There's red, yellow & green curries.
I read/heard somewhere that curcumin was found in the ROOT of the tumeric plant, and it's just a small part of the root at that.

You have just sent me on a learning curve, PatColo. This is my understanding:
Red Curry is red mainly from red chili peppers. It may or may not contain turmeric (depends on the specific recipe of the curry).
Green Curry is green mainly from green chili peppers. It may or may not contain turmeric.
Yellow Curry is yellow mainly from turmeric.
And curcumin is contained in the root of the plant, and if it comes from a specific part of the root, I don't know.
And as beefsteak says about pepper and turmeric:
Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts (available in tablets or capsules) three times per day or as directed on the product label. Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Neither curcumin nor turmeric taken orally is well absorbed unless taken with black pepper or piperine, a constituent of black pepper responsible for its pungency. When shopping for supplements, make sure that the one you choose contains black pepper extract or piperine. (If you're cooking with turmeric, be sure to add some black pepper to the food.). Be patient when taking turmeric supplements: the full benefits may not be apparent for eight weeks.

based on Katmandu's post there a Dahl type curry would contain a few Tumerics in it. I enjoy a Dahl Tadka which is a lentil curry with onions, tomatoes and some other good stuff. I chuck just a few mustard seeds in as well. Very easy to make and takes maybe 20 minutes. Very tasty with some nice steamed rice.

Thought I would pass along the hint .. my gravy (as in biscuits and gravy) is significantly yellower than any other gravy I have ever seen due to the addition of turmeric.

I get my turmeric from www.mountainroseherbs.com I use it in the whole herb form, and pill it myself with a capsule machine ( www.capsuleconnection.com ) Most of the time I add cayenne pepper to the turmeric before it is put in capsules. From everything I have read about herbs is you want to use them in the whole form and not bits and parts.

Liver health is directly tied to your overall health, and poor liver health could very well be the root cause of many diseases that currently affect millions of people worldwide. Often assaulted with toxic substances like high-fructose corn syrup, which can ‘overburden’ the liver and subsequently lead to complications, it is very likely that your liver has experienced at least some degree of damage due to dietary and environmental factors. In fact, the only way to avoid the buildup of toxins in the liver would be to eat a nearly perfect diet free of additives, fillers, modified ingredients, or chemicals — virtually the opposite of the average American diet, which critically lacks any liver cleansing foods.
Thankfully, it is very possible to repair your liver naturally and help release excessive toxin buildup through the power of healing foods. Here are 5 natural liver cleansing foods:
1. Cleanse Your Liver with Avocados
Avocados have been shown to naturally protect and repair your liver. Containing a high amount of glutathione-producing compounds, avocados can actually help boost the ability of the liver to cleanse itself. Astonishing research (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/12/001219074822.htm) has even shown that consuming one or two avocados per week for as little as 30 days can make a serious difference in the state of your liver health. The best part? Avocados can be enjoyed with virtually any meal, and are available throughout the world. Try adding in some fresh, organic avocados with your next meal to reap the benefits of liver cleansing foods like this one.
2. Garlic
The superfood garlic, which is known for (http://naturalsociety.com/garlic-provides-natural-protection-against-cancer-and-infections/) its ability to fight against cancer and infections naturally, is also among the many great liver cleansing foods as it is very useful in repairing a compromised liver. While the benefits of garlic (http://naturalsociety.com/benefits-of-garlic/) for liver health and beyond are many, one reason for its superior effects have to do with the fact that garlic contains numerous sulfur-containing compounds that are known to activate the liver enzymes responsible for expelling toxins from the body. Another lies in the presence of both allicin and selenium, two important nutrients that play an integral role in the protection of the liver from damage.
3. Turmeric
Turmeric can uniquely assist the enzymes that are responsible for flushing out known dietary carcinogens. The result is enhanced protection against liver damage, and even regeneration of affected liver cells. Turmeric is also notably responsible for improving the health of the gallbladder as well. These benefits are in addition to the shocking ability to turmeric to combat cancer in a number of studies. Researchers at the UCLA also found that curcumin (http://naturalsociety.com/curcumin/) — the ‘key’ compound within turmeric — exhibits cancer-blocking properties (http://naturalsociety.com/turmeric-curcumin-naturally-block-cancer-cells/). The lab found that the enzymes in the patients’ mouths responsible for promoting cancer spread and growth were inhibited by curcumin supplementation. The ingestion of curcumin intake even blocked the spread of the malignant cells.
4. Lemon and Lime
While not exactly one of the liver cleansing foods, warm water with lemon (http://naturalsociety.com/water-with-lemon-each-morning-fights-fat-boosts-immunity/) or lime each morning could be one of the simplest and most advantageous methods of improving the health of your liver. High in vitamin C and potassium, lemons can help regulate biological functions. Some experts, such as A.F. Beddoe — who wrote the book Biological Ionization as Applied to Human Nutrition, have also stated that the liver produces more enzymes in response to water with lemon than to any other food.

Was it you, PatColo who posted last week a native Indian "healer" video who advised about needing to use 6:1 coriander to tumeric to compensate for the overheating of the liver that has just been asked to process the tumeric by itself when found in food? He stated that coriander was the required "cooler" that offset the
heat generating property of tumeric in the liver which could damage the liver.
Wish I could find that again...it was about 8 minutes long if I recall, and was only the one male speaker.
There was another "item" that should be consumed" at the same time as coriander and tumeric. THAT WOULD BE FENNEL, also 6:1 tumeric ratio.
I do know that he did NOT mention any black pepper consumption with tumeric which I've read is highly recommended elsewhere. Mercola perhaps?

http://naturalsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/spices3-210x131.jpgUsed in the ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, curcumin is a naturally powerful anticancer compound that has been found to decrease brain tumor size in animals by 81 percent in more than 9 studies. A derivative of turmeric, curcumin is the pigment responsible for turmeric’s yellow-orange color. Each 100 grams of turmeric contains around 3 to 5 grams of curcumin, though turmeric is a also very powerful on its own. New studies are shedding light on curcumin, and illuminating its numerous benefits on cancer and other diseases.
Researchers experimenting with curcumin in the treatment of a fatal brain cancer known as glioblastoma (GBMs) published their groundbreaking findings in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in July. Adding scientific basis to previous findings surrounding the positive effects of curcumin, they showed that the compound dramatically decreased brain tumors in 9 out of the 11 studies examined by 81 percent. Furthermore, there was no evidence of toxicity, whereas chemotherapy and other cancer treatments often result in extreme side effects that are sometimes worse than the actual disease. Curcumin is not only effective against brain cancer, however.
According to a study conducted in 2008 and published in Cancer Prevention Research, curcumin also inhibits the growth and spread of breast cancer cells by directly impacting the function of alpha6beta4 integrin, responsible for cancer progression. Another study, performed in 2010, found that curcumin also has the potential to target cancer stem cells. Following the wave of information of curcumin, researchers who posted their findings in Molecular Pharmacology classified curcumin as a pancreatic cancer cell inhibitor back in 2009. Even more interesting is the fact that in most of these studies the researchers concluded that curcumin may also aid many different types of cancer that were not included in the trials.
While an amazing anticancer substance, studies have also pinpointed curcumin as a tool against more than 572 other diseases. Some of these include, in order of study count: oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, chemically-induced liver disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and liver fibrosis. Curcumin has even been found to influence more than 700 genes, which could explain its link to DNA repair.
Curcumin is an amazing natural compound that has profound effects on cancer and hundreds of other diseases. While it has been widely studied compared to many other nutritional substances, studies are only beginning to recognize the healing effects of curcumin and turmeric.

Because the tumeric is going to help generate bile production and if you take it it's going to cause you more problems & more obstruction than you had before you started.
Also, I know I've said this so many times before & I'm repeating myself , but it's worth saying it again......
No one should ever do a liver or gall bladder cleanse unless they have an open bowel.
What that means is you ALWAYS do a bowel cleanse FIRST before ever doing a liver or gall bladder cleanse.
NO constipation at all, meaning moving the bowels 2 to 3 times a day for at least 3 days in a row.....
then you can proceed to the liver/gall bladder....if not the toxins and junk coming out of the liver & gallbladder
need to be able to eliminate or else you will make yourself very sick & be in alot of pain.

guess I wasn't clear. I have a friend who has been diagnosed with primarily biliary cirrhosis in his 70s after a post operative workup after coronary bypass (3) were created. He'd like to add tumeric to his diet and asked me what I knew about using it with all the liver warnings he'd seen.
So, if I understand what I've read on the net, non-alcoholic cirrhosis means his bile ducts are major closed down, destroyed or something not good.
How do I answer him about incorporating tumeric into his diet when he has what I referred to up above as bile obstruction in his liver?
Clearer now?
Old Herb Lady

Clearer yes, but it's still the same answer....bowel flush first...then move onto the liver and gall bladder.
Tumeric isn't what he needs.
Try this link...go to the book that says 5 day bowel flush and read it ...that's what I would do if it were me (I'd buy that stuff & use it ! )
then go to the other book that says 5 day liver flush (I'd buy that stuff & use it ! )

Ok, I see we are still not communicating, and again it is my fault.
Cirrhotic liver has scarred shut bile ducts, according to his biopsy pictures given to him by his doctor from the lab after that procedure. He's shown them to me.
A liver cleanse of an impaired liver whose bile ducts are scarred shut sounds dangerous to him, and so does using tumeric.
Now is your answer the same? If the ductwork is shut/obstructed, how does the liver flush the toxins out in your proposed liver cleanse? Doesn't that put a tremendous extra load on the remaining open bile ducts? I'm certain he doesn't want to lose anymore bile ducts due to flushing toxins en masse' that are already scarred shut and non-functioning.
Still same response?
Old Herb Lady
23rd September 2012, 12:32 PM
SCARRED SHUT biliary tract is definitely not what you said. Good God that poor man. Is he real jaundice ?
So your question is how does one get rid of scar tissue that is causing bile duct obstruction ?
Just so that I understand clearly what you are saying.
He has something very, very dangerous and
I thought you meant he was blocked up/obstructed by/with gallstones !!!
How sick is he ??
I hope he's on a really really good diet ! I feel so bad for him !
beefsteak
23rd September 2012, 12:54 PM
He's my brother-in-law as well as my friend. His jaundice is barely discernible and is on bear bile replacement medicine 2 or 3 times a day, I don't remember.
I haven't been able to influence his diet with dialog, but do know he's investigating consuming tumeric.
His diagnosis is only about 4 months old.
I agree that it is dangerous, thus the level of my questions.
Again, my apologies for not using the right adjectives trying to explain his particular obstruction. I should have said scarred from the git-go.
I just don't remember the percentage of scarred shut he was told after his biopsy. Obviously he still has some liver bile ducts working or he'd be dead already, right?
Sure, he'd like to get rid of the scarring. I personally didn't think to ask that question because I assumed it was not possible. Is natural scar tissue replacement with healthy tissue even an option? I think he's 73 but I'm just guessing. He's older than my wife, Helen.
My question still is about the safety of him using tumeric in any amount to keep healthy and clear whatever percentage of working bile ducts he has left. That's my question because it is his question of me.
Old Herb Lady
23rd September 2012, 01:29 PM
Oh Beefsteak, it's okay, sometimes when face to face with a person it takes hours to even get all the info to comprehend.
He probably would turn the color of a carrot if he didn't have some of those ducts working properly !
I can not tell you if turmeric would be safe or unsafe for him to take. There are wayyy too many unknowns.
I have no idea !!
As far as scar tissue, castor oil packs is what I was getting at for helping to clear that, however, there is just no way
to give you an answer. It is way too complex to give someone ideas without knowing more about him.. so sorry !!
The only thing that I can possibly suggest is go back to Doc's website ( dr schulze ) and email him on his blog...

I headed off to the local health food place on the weekend. Grabbed some Tumeric tablets. Been taking them this week. Forgot this morning.
Nothing astounding to report. Early days yet. I am going to make my own going forward because $1 per pill is a bit steep. Same price for probotics as well. Not sure the alternatives for that though.
Since starting the Lipsomal back in February I've been on a roller coaster and the lows have been pretty low. I did start plans to get my affairs in order. Seems like a 2 month cycle. Felt great month 1 , crap month 2, 3 was good but 4 was not good, 5th month was average, 6th month was the end of the line, I felt very ill. Since then it's been mostly good. Less and less ill, more and more good.
Hoping tumeric will help deal with anything nasty that might trying to take advantage of things. We'll see.

I bought a little 50G bag of turmeric powder a month or so back (< $1), and have just been taking a spoonful's worth 1-2x day around meal time, washing down with whatever fluid is handy. No coriander/cilantro/fennel etc accompaniment. But I'd like to fix that (imagining it is in fact a problem). I think of cilantro as a fresh/green herb, not a powder or pill I can buy a bunch of and keep dry, travel easily with etc. All I've done in light of the vid in reply 10 is, hit my food extra heavy with the black table pepper.. :D

Glass, is this you MOOD which has been so roller-coastery? Or was there some "observable" physical ailment you were medicating, in which case only disclose what you feel proper.
I didn't feel a whit of difference either from my eating say 1-3 G's/day turmeric powder. Overlapping this new turmeric consumption & beginning around the same time, I've been taking these "Purlina II" touted as a detox/liver-cleanse supplement, which I bought in Thailand, and I could only find sites in Thai language describing it, IE
http://www.thaimarketshare.com/product_detail.php?productid=382
which translate.google.com (http://translate.google.com/) says says:
Purlina II (Perry Catalina II).
Ingredients in 1 capsule.
L - Glutathione 150 mg glutathione
Choline 100 mg.
The cast of three Spirulina 80 mg
Turmeric Extract 50 mg
L - BSS Caffeine 30 mg
L - 30 mg Methyl O'Neill
L - Glutamine 20 mg
Vitamin B 3 20 mg
Chromium Chelate 6.5 mg
How Nick Thomas L. Pan Zhi 6 mg
Vitamin B6 2 mg
Vitamin B 2 1.7 mg.
Vitamin B1 1.5 mg
Vitamin B12 2 mcg.
Folic Acid 200 mcg.
Dose: Dosage 1 tablet before bedtime.
^ about 50 cents a tablet- I don't think I'll buy another box after these run out. I get plenty of B-complex, been eating turmeric straight recently, & most those other thing I have no clue about, guess I could goog-em.
Thing is, there was no known, observable health issue I've been seeking to remedy by taking any of the above- I've just gone on a little liver cleanse kick recently, really just stemming from "guilty conscience for past sins" namely drinking myself silly a few times in past lives. I've seen/felt absolutely no diff this past ~month now taking these "herbal remedies". And they're a little too spendy to just take without any "cause" - except to imagine they're acting prophylactically (preventing)... in which case I'd like to get them straight from well-chosen foods, prolly cheaper and more effective anyways.
Glass, listen to this guest's spiel, she's big on IODINE being the root of a bunch of shite which Western med overlooks, or prescribes nonsense for etc- a big one was how it affects even MOOD,
I listened to this this morning, guest Hollingsworth is down on [either bromine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromine) or bromide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromide), I can't understand which one they're saying!! Anyone? I think it's the former, bromine] and soy, and she likes iodine, check her site for more re her shtick.

PC my mood does get affected when I get this ill feeling. It's amazing how much it can impact.
The main point of my post was not to hypocondriac but to say that the ideas and suggestions shared on this forum such as the Lipsomal and the Tumeric have made a huge contribution to my feeling better and continuing to improve over time. I have had a lot of time to get ill so I expect an equal amount of time to get better. The rate of improvement I feel is amazing.
It's been a couple steps forward and one step back but over time the improvement is there. The roller coaster ride I mentioned. If other people are trying these things because they feel poorly then my advice is to stick at it. Even if you feel great initially then it tapers off and you start to feel poorly again, don't abandon the things you have been taking (unless its making you way worse), keep at it and things like feeling better should come back to you.
It's been working for me. As to Tumeric. I think this stuff is very interesting. Only been taking a short while but it has a kind of easing effect on my stomach. For now it's part of the program.

'A new study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research has confirmed for the first time in a randomized, controlled clinical trial that the primary polyphenol in turmeric known as curcumin is both safe and effective in treating serious states of depression.
The research was performed at the Department of Pharmacology, Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India, and involved patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). The objective of the trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of curcumin with fluoxetine (Prozac) in 60 patients diagnosed with MDD. Subjects were randomized to receive either a six week treatment with fluoxetine (20 mg) and curcumin (1000 mg) individually or their combination.'

So with all this news about turmeric/curcumin as miracle herb, I've been asking the next natural question: how can I capitalize on this? >:D
Startpage'd about farming it. This came up, from India. Bear in mind, re the article's varying between acres & hectares: an acre is ~0.4 hectare, so a hectare (100M x 100M) is ~2.5 acres:

Busthani in his turmeric field
[oh, yeah, that's a helpful pic! /sarc -PC]
About 17 tonnes of fresh turmeric was harvested from an acre
Mr. Muhammed Busthani, from Koduvally in Kozhikode district of Kerala, does not claim to be an experienced farmer, but a casual chat with him can make one realise that the man’s knowledge in the subject is quite deep rooted.
His interest, particularly in turmeric, is surprising when he asserts: “Among all crops turmeric is the least affected by pests and infestations.”
No clue
On return to his home town after leaving a private sector job in New Delhi, Mr. Busthani was planning to venture into business.
But he was totally clueless on where to start. His friends floated many ideas, but he was all the more confused.
It was a meeting with an expert at the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and an old acquaintance, which helped him to realize that agriculture was his next calling.
In February 2011, he, along with his five friends, attended a three-day seminar and technology showcasing conducted at the Institute under the aegis of National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of ICAR.
That was a turning point in the life of Mr. Busthani and his friends.
“After attending various sessions in the seminar and hearing the success stories of farmer participants, we decided to grow turmeric,” he recalls.
Initially, they booked one tonne of seeds of Prathibha turmeric variety from a farmer delegate in the seminar. The friends formed a trust and took one acre land on lease at Sultan Bathery, Wayanad, and thus Bucca Farms was born.
From that one acre plot the team harvested around 17 tonnes of fresh turmeric in January 2012.
“We dried about 100 kg of Prathibha turmeric and powdered it for domestic use. After that, the home made dishes were all in a different taste. When my wife pointed out the superiority of turmeric powder, I thought of cultivating it on commercial scale,” he recalls.
Exploring options
He took the appreciation seriously and explored the opinions of the neighbouring housewives — a sort of survey study.
All the neighbours who used Prathibha turmeric for cooking endorsed the ‘magic’ of Prathibha turmeric powder.
This year, the friends leased out around 18 acres of land at Pazhayangadi near Vellamunda in Wayanad district of Kerala and the entire area was planted with the remaining Parthiba seeds.
Today, Bucca Farms may be the largest farm growing a single variety of turmeric in Kerala. The farmers adopt the production packages recommended by IISR.
The operations including the fertilizer applications are targeted to get a yield of 320 tonnes. IISR scientists’ team has developed specific fertilizer recommendations to obtain a fixed yield from a unit area of land, known as ‘targeted yield’.
As the crop is showing good health and uniform growth, the farmers are expecting a yield somewhere near the targeted levels.
Tonnes per hectare
“Maturing in 225 days under rainfed conditions, Prathibha gives an average yield of 39.12 tonnes per hectare. Relatively higher levels of curcumin (6.25per cent), oleoresin (16.2per cent) and essential oil (6.2 per cent) make this variety a hot choice for industrial, medicinal, and culinary purposes.
“The variety is proven to give 6 to 7 per cent of curcumin under Kerala conditions,” says Dr. B Sasikumar, Principal Scientist of the institute who developed it more than 10 years back.
“The Prathibha variety, which was released in the year 1996, has proved to be more adaptable to different states of India like Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab etc, owing to its better phenotypic plasticity and other favourable conditions,” says Dr. M Anandaraj, Director, Indian Institute of Spices Research.
With his two years of experience of turmeric cultivation, Mr. Busthani is now aware of the problems of farming in the state — labour shortage and high labour costs.
Remedy
And he has a remedy too for this malady — farm mechanization. In fact, one of the major labour requirements for turmeric in the state is for bed-making for planting. With the help of local skilled workers, he converted a tractor mounted disc plough into a bed maker.
“Though the topography of the area was undulating; we could make uniform beds for planting turmeric in the entire 18 acres land using the bed-maker. It helped us to save about 300 labourers’ work,” he adds.
The farmer is also contemplating going in for available modern techniques in other farm operations so as to bring down the cost of production.
“We are working on a tractor mountable device to harvest the crop in the coming season,” he adds.
He was also one of the farmers identified for scientific cultivation of ginger (varada) under the institutes’ NAIP project on multi-enterprise farming models to address the agrarian crisis of Wayanad, Kerala in 2011.

The powers of some foods to heal and nourish are so impressive and varied that these foods should be included in our weekly if not daily diets without exception. In recent years, modern science has uncovered so many remarkable qualities in turmeric in particular for the spice’s amazing potential to prevent and heal various health issues. Some research even shows how turmeric can boost oral health greatly, offering support for issues like gingivitis, mouth cancer, and much more.
The health benefits of turmeric (http://naturalsociety.com/overcoming-pharmaceuticals-top-health-benefits-of-turmeric/) are amazing, with several studies connecting turmeric and oral cancer treatment and prevention. One of the more recent studies (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15260388) indicates turmeric can reverse (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20587949) precancerous changes in the mouth. As GreenMedInfo (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/turmeric-superior-chemical-mouthwash-improving-oral-health-0) reports, there are also more than a dozen studies linking it to oral cancer cell death. Recently, researchers revealed that (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23917396) nanoparticles loaded with turmeric extract could actually kill oral cancer cells that had proven resistant to chemotherapy treatment.
Though turmeric is most commonly thought of as a curry spice, it’s versatile and can be added to anything from fish and eggs to smoothies and salads. Further research indicates the more time turmeric (http://naturalsociety.com/turmeric/) spends in your mouth, the healthier that mouth might be.
Last year, in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology, a study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3498709/) showed that turmeric could be as, if not more, effective as a traditional mouthwash in the treatment of gingivitis.
Gingivitis is a periodontal disease characterized by bad breath, bleeding, and inflamed gums. Left untreated it can lead to more destructive periodontal disease. Generally, mouthwashes using chlorexidine are used to treat this condition. And while complications involving this compound are rare, they can include anaphylactic reactions.
The study had subjects rinse their mouths twice daily with either a 0.1% curcumin (turmeric) extract mouthwash or a traditional mouthwash solution using 0.2% chlorexidine. Despite the chlorexidine solution being twice as concentrated as the turmeric solution, the turmeric solution outperformed the traditional mouthwash in all three measurements. The turmeric reduced plaque, gingivitis symptoms, and bacterial activity at rates greater than the traditional mouthwash.
Despite this, the researchers, “in the characteristically conservative style of academia”, suggested turmeric mouthwash had “comparable anti-plaque, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties” as the traditional chlorexidine mouthwash.
Although the researchers didn’t come out and say turmeric was more effective than the traditional mouthwash, their numbers spoke for them. Plus, when you consider all of the health benefits of this brightly hued root, the benefits of such a mouthwash could be multiplied when you swallow it after your rinse!

Over the years, there has been plenty of research (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/greenmed/display/disease) performed on the value of natural substances in treating human diseases, but very little has been conducted on the effects of commonly used supplements and/or food components such as spices in already healthy people to improve their well-being.
All the more reason why a study published in 2012 in the Nutrition Journal titled, "Diverse effects of a low dose supplement of lapidated curcumin in healthy middle aged people (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3518252/)," holds great interest among those on the fence about using dietary supplements to improve the quality and perhaps length of their lives, but for which clinical proof is lacking.
The study was conducted in healthy middle aged people (40–60 years old) with a low dose of curcumin (80 mg/day) in a fat soluble (lipidated) form. Curcumin is the primary polyphenol found in turmeric (3% concentration by dry weight), which gives the root its bright saffron color. Two groups of 19 subjects were given either curcumin or placebo for 4 weeks. Blood and saliva samples were taken before and after the 4 weeks and analyzed for the following blood and saliva measures relevant to health promotion:
Blood plasma levels of triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations (mg/dl).
Blood plasma concentrations of nitric oxide and soluble intracellular adhesion molecule (sICAM).
Blood plasma concentrations of myeloperoxidase (ng/ml) and C-reactive protein (mg/L x10).
Saliva activities of amylase (U/L) and antioxidant status (uM of copper reducing equivalents).
Blood plasma activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (U/L) and beta amyloid protein (pmoles/L).
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oBYhzykle4E/UF4PWSOj_EI/AAAAAAAARz8/IxYhUqLJB9M/s220/200.jpg (http://products.naturalblaze.com/superfoods.html)The positive results were reported as follows:
Curcumin lowered triglycerides, but not cholesterol (note: lowering cholesterol may harm human health (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/underreported-dangers-low-cholesterol)).
Curcumin increased plasma contents of nitric oxide, a molecule that can work against high blood pressure, as well as lowering plasma concentrations of sICAM, a molecule linked to atherosclerosis.
Curcumin raised plasma myeloperoxidase concentrations, without raising C-reactive protein and ceruloplasmin values – a sign of normal and inflammation-related neutrophil function.
Curcumin reduced salivary amylase activities, which are an indicator of sympathetic nervous system stress.
Curcumin raised salivary radical scavenging capacities, an indicator of reduced oxidative stress.·
Curcumin reduced plasma contents of beta amyloid protein, a marker for brain aging and Alzheimer's disease.
Curcumin reduced ALT liver enzyme activities, a marker for liver injury.
The study authors noted that, "in apparently healthy individuals, a relatively low dose of a specific curcumin preparation can exert a variety of health promoting effects." They pointed out that in previous human intervention studies using curcumin much larger doses were used in people who were already suffering from health problems. What was unique about their findings was that, "the wide variety of potentially health promoting effects seen in the present study suggests that curcumin can produce benefits in people without immediate disease states." [emphasis added]
What is so encouraging about this study is that unlike much of the research that now exists using natural substances and/or dietary interventions to improve the condition of subjects with already serious diseases, we now have solid evidence that curcumin has wellness-promoting properties. This is a different concept than 'disease-fighting,' which participates in a war-like mentality and implies that the body must be subjected to aggressive, heroic and sometimes dangerous treatments to beat it back into a state of symptom reduction or symptom remission.
The point, of course, is to prevent disease from taking hold in the first place by supporting the body's many complex systems naturally. Curcumin (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/substance/curcumin), and the whole turmeric root (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/substance/turmeric) from which it derives, has a remarkable ability to modulate numerous pathways in the body simultaneously, almost as if by some intelligent hand. This new study only further confirms why this plant has been appreciated as a sacred healing ally for thousands of years (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/turmeric-return-golden-goddess), and why it may play a vital role in the modern world both in protecting us from many life-threatening illnesses (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/600-reasons-turmeric-may-be-worlds-most-important-herb) and acting as a body wide tonic, even when consumed in moderation, or in culinary doses.

I have been eating turmeric, ( mostly 2 teaspoons in water and making a paste/ slurry out of it ) since my younger brother was diagnosed with throat cancer, and my older sisiter died from it r and my dad died from it, all have/had it, I figure prevention?
On Tuesday, the British Journal of Cancer published a propitious study from Cork Cancer Research Centre ("CCRC") at the University College Cork in Ireland that found that curcumin-a compound in the curry spice turmeric-begins killing esophageal cancer cells within 24 hours. According to the CCRC study, curcumin ostensibly acts as a free radical scavenger that triggers a lethal cell death signal that causes cancerous cells in the throat to digest and kill themselves.CCRC states that currently less than 20 percent of people survive throat cancer beyond five years. But now, Dr. Sharon McKenna, the lead study author at CCRC says: "These exciting results suggest that scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat [throat] cancer." Dr. McKenna further explains: "Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value. Dr. Geraldine O'Sullivan-Coyne, a medical researcher in our lab had been looking for new ways of killing resistant [throat] cancer cells. She tested curcumin on
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/234470.php
A 2005 investigation by Wang and her team first revealed that curcumin restrained the growth of head and neck cancer, first in cells and after in mouse models. In the tests on the mice, curcumin was applied in paste form directly onto the tumors. In an investigation in 2010, also done in cells and mouse models, the team discovered that curcumin suppressed head and neck cancer growth by regulating cell cycling, explained Eri Srivatsan, and adjunct professor of surgery, author and a Jonsson Cancer Center investigator who for seven years, together with Wang, has been investigating curcumin and its anti-cancer properties.

This tells me the best delivery vector is via a lipid solution, oil mixed with the curcumin. Similar to the Lipsoma Vit C method. Will a store bought spice powder work? Actually it seems it works no matter how you take it or where you use it.
I've been taking an off the shelf curcumin pill but its expensive. Sold as a pain reliever for joints. I think I am going to try my hand at growing some. I have grown other plants in the family easily enough.

If you can't find fresh curcumin at your grocery store, you can buy it on ebay. Ne sense taking it in pill form if you can buy it fresh.

In this recent interview (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?54367-Post-Genderism-Beyond-the-Gender-Binary-%28Trans-Humanism-stuff%29&p=720595&viewfull=1#post720595) with Sofia Smallstorm, she vouches for brushing your teeth with turmeric powder. I have yet to try this, but will shortly, as I do have a bag of turmeric around. She talked about how counter-intuitive it seems, coz of how for example curry will stain your clothes pretty bad... but alas she raved about how white it leaves your teeth! ;D
Sounds like a good formula may be, mix baking soda & turmeric in an empty, lidded jar so you can easily/thoroughly mix by shaking vigorously, and then just keep this jar in your bathroom. Then at brush time, put a small spoonful/whatever (need to experiment) in your mouth, and then take a small shot of hydrogen peroxide to wet it (swish a bit...). Then brush away! When finished, just chase the BS/Tur/H2O2 "tooth paste" down the hatch with water-- for good health!! :D
Also see the story of zap's brother who suffers from cancer, and his apparent good results with turmeric :

Six Hours of Increased Memory By Adding This to Breakfast (http://www.activistpost.com/2014/11/six-hours-of-increased-memory-by-adding.html)

Heather Callaghan
Activist Post (http://www.activistpost.com/2014/11/six-hours-of-increased-memory-by-adding.html)
Researchers from Monash Asia Institute at Monash University found that you can spice up your memory and help with diabetic and prediabetic conditions with a tiny amount of a powdery substance that might be in your cabinet as we speak.
This substance can be added to scrambled egg recipes...
Can make porridge and oatmeal pop when something sweet is added.
Mixed into pancake batters.
Sprinkled atop some waffles and blended with maple.
Mixed with leftovers...
Or in the case of this study, placed on plain ol' boring toast.
And of course, it doesn't have to be for breakfast... Have you guessed what it is yet?
Researchers for the study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition (http://apjcn.nhri.org.tw/server/APJCN/23/4/Turmeric.pdf), found that adding just one gram (about 1/4 to 1/3 teaspoon) of turmeric to breakfast could help improve the memory of people who are in the very early stages of diabetes and at risk of cognitive impairment.
Cognitive impairment and dementia have been connected to diabetes in the past, so it made sense to test the powers of turmeric on both. Curcumin, which accounts for 3 to 6 per cent of turmeric and has been shown by experimental studies to reduce the risk of dementia. And it is true that black pepper increases the bioavailability of curcumin by a thousand times.
Emeritus Professor Mark Wahlqvist said that early intervention by halting dementia/diabetes or softening its impact can reduce the burden of the aging population's rising cases of diabetes which leaves them predisposed to other disease and disorders.
Wahlqvist recently led a study in Taiwan that tested the working memory of men and women aged 60 or older who had recently been diagnosed with untreated pre-diabetes.
He said:
Working memory is widely thought to be one of the most important mental faculties, critical for cognitive abilities such as planning, problem solving and reasoning.
Assessment of working memory is simple and convenient, but it is also very useful in the appraisal of cognition and in predicting future impairment and dementia.
In the placebo-controlled study, subjects were given one gram (about 1/4 to 1/3 teaspoon) of turmeric with an otherwise nutritionally bland breakfast of white bread. Their working memory was tested before and some hours after the meal.
We found that this modest addition to breakfast improved working memory over six hours in older people with pre-diabetes
Our findings with turmeric are consistent with these observations, insofar as they appear to influence cognitive function where there is disordered energy metabolism and insulin resistance.
Check out more of Wahlqvist's publications here (http://apjcn.nhri.org.tw/index.php?map_id=asi).
***Caution!***
Part of the reason turmeric is known to help with diabetes is the very fact that it can lower blood sugar. This means that if you have hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, thyroid problems that mess with blood sugar, and blood pressure problems you should consult with your preferred healthcare practitioner first. It is also naturally a blood thinner! Turmeric can mess with the effects of those medications as well. See other cautions here (http://epicureandigest.com/2013/06/22/dosage-and-method-turmeric/).
Turmeric is potent for the ability of such small amounts to create tangible change in the body, including pain relief. Please get yours inexpensively in bulk at the healthfood store, but yes, you can find the spice (http://www.amazon.com/Starwest-Botanicals-Organic-Turmeric-Powder/dp/B001A1PYHW?tag=permacultucom-20&linkCode=w13&linkID=FGBNVPA47LBE2NTM&ref_=assoc_res_sw_result_2) online too, cheaper in bulk. Look for organic and non-irradiated for best benefits.

THE MORNING SHOW
with
Patrick Timpone Christian Wilde Turmeric: A Miracle Medicine?
More than 6,000 articles published within the past two decades have identified novel ways this single neutraceutical or phytonutrient is able to benefit our health. Dr. Andrew Weil has explained: “the therapeutic advantages of turmeric and curcumin are almost too numerous to list.” So would we be right to call turmeric an absolute miracle spice?
With so many suspected health benefits, based on clinical peer journal studies and evidenced based medicine being attributed to turmeric, it should not be surprising why turmeric is being used regularly by millions of people all over the world. In fact, it has been a popular supplement for more than 2,500 years. Health benefits believed to be derived from turmeric may be strongest in India where studies suggest the reason for the lowest rates of certain catastrophic diseases on the planet.

Christian Wilde is an author and researcher who has devoted seven years to exploring early detection and prevention of heart disease for the general public. Becoming aware of (non-cholesterol) related heart disease in his own profile in 1997, he sought to better understand why 50% of all heart attacks were actually happening to people with so-called normal cholesterol.
His preventive book, Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke explored and confirmed inflammation’s role in complicating heart disease as well as cholesterol. Wilde’s newest book, Miracle Stem Cell Heart Repair, delves into the science of using one’s own stem cells for actually repairing the damaged heart.

Did you know that a single culinary serving of spices in the form of curry can dilate your arteries, preventing the cardiovascular harms associated with eating common foods?
While spices are thought of mainly as culinary agents for the aesthetical enhancement of the flavor of food, they are also powerful medicinal agents, and in certain respects may actually mitigate the harms of things we like to eat that may not be as good for us as their pleasurable tastes and textures would have us believe.
A recent study published in Nutrition Journal titled, "A single consumption of curry improved postprandial endothelial function in healthy male subjects: a randomized, controlled crossover trial (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4082484/)," brought home exactly this point. Moreover, it reveals that certain culinary formulas, sometimes handed down through countless generations, may have indispensable value for our health. Interestingly, we find this concept echoed in the word recipe itself, whose first recorded use in Mid 16-century French literally means "medical prescription."

Turmeric can help prevent prostate cancer, stop the growth of existing prostate cancer and even destroy cancer cells. Multiple researchers have found that the active components in turmeric makes it one of the best protectors against radiation-induced tumors. It also has a preventive effect against tumor cells such as T-cell leukemia, colon carcinomas and breast carcinomas.
