In my opinion, the high lumens thing is getting WAY out of hand. I have a lot of high-end flashlights, but I would say that 99.9% of the time I run (the variable ones anyway) at a setting of under 100 lumens. My most used flashlight (a keychain light) has a 120 lumen upper end, and 5 lumen lower end. I keep it set on the 5 lumen setting, and only turn it to "high" about twice a month.

My "lumen king" flashlight has an upper end around 400-ish lumens, I've used that setting exactly ONCE... when it arrived to test that it worked. Even a 150-ish lumen light is good to the tree line (about 200 yards away typically) with PLENTY of brightness.

For *tactical* purposes you want a reliable high output flashlight of no less than 200 lumens. I've got a 200 lumen Surefire mounted on my AK (example below, but I have my SF mounted further back over the Tango Down grip). Of course the model in the OP is dual output, but in the middle of a storm I want to burn the retinas of any bad actor.

I subscribe to Magpul's meme - 'unfair advantage'. Or as a long gone GSUSer put in his sig, "If you find yourself in a fair fight then your tactics suck."

Agreed. You need lots of lumens for night shooting. When it comes to survival, you don't want to be shooting in the dark.

Well, if a 600 lumen flashlight will burn retinas, what will my 10 million candle power spot light do to someone? Midnight, I like that flashlight, thanks for the recommendation. I need more flashlights.

Can't have too many flashlights in one's toolbox. Retina burning by a 600 lumen flashlight is hyperbole, however your 10 million CP spotlight may actually do it. All I'm concerned about is eliminating the bad guy's night vision to the point of temporary blindness long enough for me to do what I need to be doing.

Dunno why, but I love flash lights. There's a TON of applications for this. Yeah I bought one. :)

It is a complete turn key drop in without any modifications. Have converted all of my other maglites and love it, Better more even light , brighter, much longer battery life and I think drop proof.

this may seem like a silly question, but what is the difference between lumens and CP?
does any one have a chart for conversion of CP-Lumens?

From here:
http://www.ehow.com/about_5385320_candlepower-vs-lumens.html

Candlepower

Candlepower is a scientific measurement of light at its source or how much light is produce by an object itself. If a lamp has 200 candlepower, then it produces--at its source--the equivalent radiance of 200 candles. Candles themselves are unpredictable in terms of radiance, so the actually value was replaced long ago with an exact metric definition that roughly equals the light an average candle puts out. Technically, this definition says that one candlepower, or candela, is the same as a monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x 1012 hertz and which has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian. This essentially transforms energy and frequency ratings into light being produced.

Lumens

Lumens, on the other hand, are a measurement of illumination. Radiance refers to the light produced, not its effect on external objects. Illumination refers to how well the light reveals objects, and the lumen is the primary unit of measurement in this field. This is a more practical term that shows precisely how well the light illuminates other objects based on distance. One candela, for instance, is equal to about 12.57 lumens. Lumens are measured by looking at how much light is radiated out from a single source in the center of a theoretical sphere to the boundaries of that sphere.

btw, I've been comparing my 120, 200, and 600 lumen flashlights, and I'm finding that 200 lumen as a scout/weapon light may be too much as it can affect one's night vision even when directly behind it. Still experimenting.

It says ultrafire on it, which means it's a dx flashlight. If that's what you want, better to order it directly from dx:

I've bought quite a few dx flashlights, and they pretty much are all as bright as they claim to be. The key thing is, how reliable are they, and how long do they last? Another thing is, if you leave these on for more than 5 minutes they will get hot and potentially damage the led or disconnect a solder joint.

if you don't want people hiding from you at night, you should seriouisly consider something in the night vision line, picked up a monocular sometime ago and it's great, I can distinquish the gender of someone probably 75 yards away, in total darkness...you can't hide

I have a night vision monocular I bought many years ago. It is a russian model that Bushnell branded their name on. It works not too bad, and it also has IR on it which works quite good. Nothing like the new stuff, but adequate for seeing the coyotes, cougars and bears we get sneaking around at night here.

Interesting. I have one of these:RRT2 XML SMO

I think I do. I don't have it with me. Same chassis design but I think I have an earlier generation. Not as many Lumens maybe. I'll have to check.

I think it's a good handy flash. Light, easy to handle. Dial up settings work well. Reasonably sturdy. Not quite MAGLITE sturdy but it will take the knocks. I paid probably double those prices and I think it was too much. At those prices I think it's a deal.

Handling it again brings back the feelings of satisfaction. I think it's a good flashlight. I don't know about tactical though. It's a very handy piece and solid. Needs fresh batteries for best performance.

there are many headlamps out there from cheap to turbo expensive...

personally, i have used many different ones over the years from petzl to coleman. that being said, my fav one to use is a cheap one that runs on 3AAA batteries that came from home depot. it came in a set of 6 led flashlights, 2 headlamps (2white leds, 1red led) has a swivel mount, and emits a nice light that isn't too hard on your eyes. the set also included batteries and only cost $12.99 cdn.

my point being, you don't have to spend a fortune on a headlamp to have one you're happy with.
i also will say that i prefer a headlamp that is not blindingly bright, because it's hard for your eyes to adjust back to night vision when you turn it off...

a flashlight needs to be super bright to illuminate @ distance, but a headlamp is for more close up use, therefore longevity is more important than brightness...imo

remember, not all of use have the disposable $$$ that you do. ;D for myself, i own probably a dozen flashlights, and three headlamps, and until one needs replacement, i cannot justify spending the extra funds on yet another flashlight...lol

there are many headlamps out there from cheap to turbo expensive...

personally, i have used many different ones over the years from petzl to coleman. that being said, my fav one to use is a cheap one that runs on 3AAA batteries that came from home depot. it came in a set of 6 led flashlights, 2 headlamps (2white leds, 1red led) has a swivel mount, and emits a nice light that isn't too hard on your eyes. the set also included batteries and only cost $12.99 cdn.

my point being, you don't have to spend a fortune on a headlamp to have one you're happy with.
i also will say that i prefer a headlamp that is not blindingly bright, because it's hard for your eyes to adjust back to night vision when you turn it off...

a flashlight needs to be super bright to illuminate @ distance, but a headlamp is for more close up use, therefore longevity is more important than brightness...imo

All good points there FS. I agree and I hoped someone may have come across a gem, good value (cheap) while still doing what you want or more. I have a zebra lamp. Handy, lightweight but I think there is much better for that kind of money and much better for less. Some of the big brands kind of missed the boat on headlamps IMO. Reliability is what I aim for. And something that does AA.

so looking for recommendations from personal experience. Good on ya Ponce. Cool idea. Does he have a tail light?

I picked up 2 of these for around 10 bux each: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-UltraFire-1000LM-Lumens-CREE-XML-XM-L-T6-WF-501B-LED-Flashlight-/160863134579?pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item257430a373 One is brighter than the other but besides that they don't seem to get hot and they claim 1000 lumen. I also picked up a 300 lumen that comes with 2 batteries and a charger on the cheap.

BUMP.

I've been going through ALL my gear. Dunno why but I've had some heavy internal sense of urgency to get my shit together. Needless to say all of the standard batteries were dead, the AA and AAA. All except the Streamlight it uses two of the CR123A batteries which came with it.

So I ordered a 60 pack of AA's and a 60 pack of AAA's and 4 of the CR123A's from batteryjunction.com because they seemed to have the best deal. Everything with shipping was $62

I also ordered this for the light.

On a side note the flashlight is a few buck cheaper.

General, think about going rechargeable for the long haul. With solar, and inverter, you can recharge these eneloops.

I better put my Flamesuit on

But I am very much a junkie for FENIX flash lights

They are very much cost effective for pricing on their E line series .

Plus alot of there products are water proof.

Amazon has their products being solds as packages with eneloop batteries

I think the 18650 lithium ion batteries are good, you just can't buy the cheapest ones. You'll spend too much money if using regular batteries if the flashlight is bright.

There are two types of flashlights you can buy, the usa-made fenix ones that TT mentions above (or surefire, there are several brands), or cheap chinese ones.

I got this cheap one (http://www.meritline.com/zoom-cree-t6-5-mode-white-led-flashlight---p-85454.aspx) for $15 when it was on sale (I actually have two), and it works well for me. It takes 2x18650 batteries, so it has a little bit of weight to it and lasts a long time. But if you're looking for reliability, then take TT's advice.

I have bought several 501-B lights, they have different ones with no sub model # lol... same shit different name, comes in 3 or 5 speed. Tried both the bulb and LED chip, the LED uses less power, is cooler and lasts 4 times as long. Bright enough for me, I usually turn it to low cause I don't need a spotlight going on. Think they were 15 bux. This is similar to:

It takes 1x 18650 lithium ion cell. Its definitely worth getting a couple 18650 batteries and a charger if you don't have one, imo.
