Just got back from shopping. From a mile away, I can buy just about any type of food imaginable, including fresh produce from thousands of miles away picked just last week, at a reasonable price compared to what some other $hit costs.

Pre-doom appreciation. ;)

I know this is a grocery store appreciation thread..but I must say, every time I go to the grocery story I don't feel appreciated at all. Not in the least.

Especially after our weak garden results this year! Farmer's Markets are a huge blessing as well.

Horrible garden this year. I have NEVER had problems like this before. Very disappointing.

I have a great FM near me, a bakery and an excellent butcher.....although his sausages have slipped a bit. There is also a small market near me that is maybe 20% the size of a supermarket but the people are nice and service is excellent. Family run place. Cost maybe 10% extra. Go there when I can. It's a small detour. I prefer to spend at the smaller places and support local food makers. It's orange season down here and the area where I grew up grows great oranges.

Big juicy navels for a good price. Actually better than normal so maybe the export market is not so good. So much for global competition.

Yes, the world we live in today is very impressive. A grocery store in an average neighborhood has more variety than what kings had in ancient times. Unfortunately a lot of it is laced with crap.

I agree with you Sparky, the division of labor is an amazing thing to behold. Thousands of companies producing what they think will best satisfy the demands of the most people, in order that they may make a living. Like Adam Smith said, "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages".

I love my grocery store! It's probably about a mile away from my house, and it has everything . . . and in the same spot every time I go there! Most of the people that work there speak English as their second language, yet they still speak English to the customers. Their first language is usually Spanish, but the last time I went, I had a bagboy that sounded and looked like he was from the Congo. He was all smiles and it seemed like he really wanted to understand the words that I was saying as I was directing him to my truck.

Almost everyone that works there seem really happy, always smiling. The exceptions are the deli ladies, but I don't have to see them anymore since I cut processed meat out of my diet. Really, my grocery store rocks!

I do try to think about and appreciate how easy life is compared to what it could be, and likely will be once the dollar scam is revealed. The grocery store is a great example of how incredibly easy we have it right now.

I love the grocery store and farmers' markets and have several that I visit on a regular basis; each one for specifics items. Yesterday was the high end market frequented by rich, single, older women; today was the Mexican super store where I stick out like a sore thumb.

This is the first year in many where my little garden is rocking, too bad I wont be able to reap all the later fruits and vegetables. Cucumbers already fill more than half the canning jars, tomatoes... wow, be a week or 3 before they are ready. Hey I'm gonna be outta here anyways, if anyone wants free stuff send me a note... I would sabotage the garden but it isn't the plants fault or the soil that I hand dug... you know.

North of detroit 60 miles, 10 miles N off exit 91 on I-75 just in case anyone is in the area.
