Moments after his motorcycle struck a 4-year-old girl, an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed the girl’s irate father after he allegedly attacked the officer, the Chicago Sun Times reports.

Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden identified the officer as a 43-year-old veteran of the Chicago Police. The officer was headed home on Saturday evening when the horrifying incident occurred.

As he was driving home, the officer says he saw a child unexpectedly run into the street. In order not to strike the girl directly, the cop jumped off his motorcycle, pulling it down on its side on the pavement. However, the motorcycle skidded and flipped, hitting the 4-year-old girl and her 18-year-old cousin, John Passley.

As the officer attempted to provide aide to the girl, her father, identified as Christopher Middleton, 26, came running out of a nearby restaurant and aggressively approached the officer and began shouting, officials said. The cop argues that he identified himself as a police officer but Middleton still hit him in the face and knocked him to the ground before striking him repeatedly.

According to the Daily Herald, the officer said, “Take it easy, I’m the Police.” But Middleton replied, “I don’t give a f*ck who you are,” and punched him in the face.

Passley reportedly began kicking the officer, joining Middleton in the assault. Shortly after, the officer drew his weapon and fired once, fatally wounding Middleton. He was pronounced dead at around 10:14 p.m. Saturday at Loyola Medical Center.

“At that point he’s defending his life — he’s on the ground, he’s about to lose consciousness from the people who are beating him and draws his weapon in defense of his life,” Camden said. “The officer responded accordingly.”

From the Chicago Sun Times:

Middleton’s sister, Tina Middleton, said her brother lived in Elgin with the mother of his daughter and was visiting relatives in Maywood, where he grew up. “He was a good person,” she said. “I know for sure he wasn’t out to harm the man. My brother would never harm anybody. I could understand him [the officer] being upset, but two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Middleton was due to be married Aug. 18th, his sister said. Besides his daughter who was injured, Middleton also had a 6-year-old son and an unborn child, his sister said.

Middleton’s daughter suffered contusions and abrasions and was hospitalized overnight for observation.

Passley was being held by Maywood police for questioning, Shapiro said.

The officer is expected to recover from his injuries, which include contusions to his head and body from the attack and as well as a broken leg and broken shoulder from the crash, Camden added.

The Independent Police Review Authority — which examines all Chicago police-involved shootings — is investigating the incident, said Larry Merritt, an IPRA spokesman.

George Zimmerman. On the ground. Getting hit. Getting pummled, Pulls gun/shoots assailant . NOT justified even though he felt his life was in danger.

"I don’t give a f*ck who you are"

Words that statists should hear much more often.

I don't believe for one second that this is what happened. More than likely the pig was upset that he dropped his bike and took out his frustration on the nearest target.

Pretty sure buddy did not mean to run over anyone. Two people out of their heads pummeling on you after you bail on a bike is no accident.

War is but the continuation of politics by other means. This appears to be applicable on a micro level as well. This is to be expected form a member of an organised gang that shakes people down, and kidnaps and puts others in cages.

He's speeding, didn't see two people, doesn't have time to avoid them so he drops off the bike. It hits the people anyway so he starts getting beat up (because he was at fault), kills the dad.

I don't believe he was assaulted by the father or the other guy. The article states that the cop suffered a broken leg and shoulder from the crash, and "contusions to his head and body from the attack". Whatever, he was able to pick and choose which injuries were caused by the crash and which ones were "caused" from the "attack" to make his version of the story more credible. The article states that the 18 year old man who was hit by the motorcycle joined in the attack, kicking the officer on the ground, but he wasn't arrested for this? He was just questioned? And why is his version of the story nowhere to be found in the entire article, just what the cop said? Again, I don't believe for a second this pig was assaulted, he was pissed that he wrecked his bike and took it out on the poor child's father.

A 4 year old child is gone......INCREDIBLY sad.

We can all speculate as to what happened, but we will never know, as the only side of the story we have is the Officers.

Its like the boy who cried wolf - Cops have been so Unlawful and abusive, that we never know if they are telling the truth about situations like this. This Cop may be innocent, but since he voluntarily chooses to hangout with known violent criminals, his story is going to garner much suspicion.

So sad.......

On a side note, when was the last time you saw a Cop admit he was in the wrong when there is a dead body? Especially a small child.

Apparantly, no Cop in the history of America has ever been in the wrong, according to THEM.

Can a citizen shoot and kill Cops when they are beating him on the ground?

Sui - the little girl didn't die, the officer shot and killed her dad as he rushed to the scene to ensure his daughter was ok.

If this cop gets off, and Zimmerman does not, things could get very ugly, very fast.

Given the docile blubber chasses that populate this accursed country, that is unlikely to happen.

Good insight, hopefully this isn't what happened, but it seems likely based on what we know

Guys already got a broken leg and shoulder?

Nothing like beating someone when they're down...

The officer reportedly identified himself as an officer, but Middleton allegedly said that he didn’t give a (expletive) and punched the officer in the face. Another person, allegedly with Middleton, hit the cop in the back of the head. The 18-year-old cousin allegedly joined the attack of officer who was on the ground at that point. The officer, who has not been named, reportedly felt his life was in danger at that point. So he took out his weapon and shot Middleton in the groin.

Tonya Jones, who says she is Middleton’s fiance and the mother of the 4-year-old girl, said she came outside after the fight had begun between the two men. She says when the two men were getting off of the ground, the officer shot him.

The Tribune has more:

“Chris asked him, ‘Why did you shoot me, why did you shoot me,’ ” Jones said.
The officer was still pointing the gun towards Middleton, who was on the ground at the time, when Jones said she ran towards him and told him, “Please don’t shoot him no more.”
Then Jones laid on top of Middleton with her back up and dialed 911, she said.
“I saw him take his last breath,” said Jones. “He was a father trying to protect his daughter. He was never a violent person.”
Middleton died at Loyola University Medical Center just before 10:30 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the 500 block of South 2nd Avenue in Maywood, the spokesman said. The 18-year-old is being held for questioning, Shapiro said.
The 4-year-old girl was taken to Loyola hospital for observation with bruises and contusions, Camden and Shapiro said. Camden said the officer’s decision to bail from the bike prevented a head-on collision.
The incident is currently under investigation.
Middleton leaves behind a 6-year-old son and a baby girl who is scheduled arrive in December. Jones, who is five months pregnant, says she and Middleton were scheduled to get married next weekend.
“He wanted to do that before we had this child, because we were getting our lives together with God and we were trying to do the right thing and then this happened,” Jones said.
