View Full Version : After 30 years, the Marines are returning to the Colt .45 pistol

The newest Colt .45-caliber pistol is touted for its durability and design.
It is tested to make sure it can be dropped in water, covered in mud, immersed in sand or ice, or left in a dust storm — and still be able to blast off a round when you pull the trigger.
"Virtually, it's indestructible," said Casimir Pawlowski, who works in international sales and technical sevices for Colt Defense LLC. "You can drive over these things with a Humvee and they're still gonna work. It's like a brick that shoots bullets."

Interesting tidbit from the article for those who don't have time to read it all.
Colt gives a pair of customized guns to each standing president, though Bill Clinton was the only one not to accept the offer, Hinkley said.

There's also that part about the military's longevity.
Which would include a necessity for fresh replacement of recruits.

The only gun to come on the market that IMHO re-invented the market is the Kriss Super V
How it works.

This is a video of the Kriss which is caliber-ed in 45 at full auto

Now here's the Thompson, you'll see how it bounces around a lot more.

Too little recoil becomes a spent ammo problem.
.45 vs 9mm in that supper V gun, he might have had twice as much time actually firing between clips.

Soon it will be raining Glocks, as Glock owners, already known as mindless trend-followers, dump their plastic to buy the new (real) thing.

Yep.
Give me a German manufactured 9mm any day of the week. Watch me smile! ;)
Soft recoiling, ultimately reliable, plentiful and inexpensive ammo, high magazine capacity, accurate, and (with the right load) plenty hard hitting. What's not to love? ???

When it comes to defending my life, I am worth a more expensive ammo.

Or a girly man. Real men can handle a .45 for hours on end and enjoy it. I do. :)

Actually no. The best thing about a Glock is the lack of a manual safety. 1911's are great guns and fun to shoot, but a Glock is a better battle and self defense pistol. Once you go black, you never go back.

Go handle an Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Les Baer, or Wilson Combat 1911. Then tell me how great Glock is.

But with the 1911 when you miss the target,
you can just throw the pistol at them & do extreme damage that way...

Plus, if the 1911 legends are true, the shockwave of the bullet missing the target is enough to collapse ribcages and crush skulls! ;D

If your pistol was just run over by a truck, where would that put you at?

I'd be annoyed that my pistol got very minorly scuffed up under a truck tire, but the gun wouldnt mind one bit.

Glock, built for the 9mm, which the Marines are now (finally) admitting their mistake regarding and are now abandoning.
1911, still going strong after more than 100 years, with an ever-increasing following, with 1911-style guns now being built by major manufacturers S&W, Ruger, Sig, Taurus, Dan Wesson, Springfield Armory, Kimber (bleah), et alia, in addition to a host of popular (Ed Brown, Wilson, etc) and some not-so-popular others. Built for the .45ACP, which the plastic Glock frame / system demonstrably has trouble with, and for reasons easily comprehended by anyone. Anyone, that is, except for Glock fanboys, "certified Glock armorers," sponsored Glock shooters on Youtube, and the like.
Glock people: admit it, you've built your arsenal around yesterday's pointless fad, money sucked out of you like a traveling carnival midway.

Yeah, you're absolutely right - those lameass Glock 21s in .45 ACP are such huge pieces of shit, some people are driven to bury then in their backyard for a couple of years -

And some people buy into the myth of Government Model. lol
I've been around Government Models, pisterlos/race gun types, custom pistolsmiths, seasoned peace officers, etc. for 30 years and I can tell you that the consensus among all RKIs is that a Government Model/1911 (of ANY brand) will not reach a sufficient level of reliability unless and until you sink several hundred dollars worth of custom parts and custom work into it. Why do you think people ROUTINELY spend well in excess of $1,000 for a *reliable* Government Model or 1911 variant?? Why do you think people ROUTINELY spend $2-4k for custom Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson, etc. Govt. Models and 1911 variants?? (which despite all that money being spent on them they are STILL limited to single stack magazines - unless one springs for something like a double stack STI, which btw I happened to hang out with Virgil and Fred Tripp in the mid '80s to the early '90s, the two brothers who originally developed the company that ultimately became STI - http://old.stiguns.com/History.php - I got to handle the very first Tripp Research double stack Govt. Model prototype)

So your main problem with 1911's is that you have to buy a good one and not some piece of crap?
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. There is a host of 1911 wanna-be's who make things that look like 1911's but that don't work and give the platform a bad name. Like Kimber.
It's like if Bersa or Charter Arms would make a Glock clone. Patents not having expired are probably the only reason it hasn't been done. Give it time.

The thing is that I can buy FOUR low round count used gen 3 Glocks for the price of ONE 'entry level' Govt. Model. lol (and not be the least bit concerned with reliability).

Because they're so popular there are TONS of them available in the secondary market. I also note that on texasguntrader the number of people unloading 1911s is about even with those unloading Glocks. I don't track what the 'generic' (un-modded) 1911 pistols go for or how long it takes for them to sell, but generally if a Glock is listed at $475 (including Gen 1s and 2s) or less it is snatched up fast.
