By David Lazarus August 30, 2012, 9:31 a.m.

Just in case you were beginning to think rich people were deeply misunderstood and that they feel the pain of those who are less fortunate, here's the world's wealthiest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart, with some helpful advice.
"If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain," she said in a magazine piece (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gHAYO6YzqDthLAj0YM2CK_8dFccw?docId=CNG.fb8dd 20e4b2a34dde01d223b54e3399b.01). "Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working."
Yeah, let them eat cake.
Rinehart made her money the old-fashioned way: She inherited it. Her family iron ore prospecting fortune of $30.1 billion makes her Australia's (http://www.latimes.com/topic/intl/australia-PLGEO00000163.topic) wealthiest person and the richest woman on the planet.
"There is no monopoly on becoming a millionaire," she said by way of encouragement.
"Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others."
Boom. Almost too easy.
Why are people poor? Rinehart blamed what she described as "socialist," anti-business government policies, and urged Australian officials to lower the minimum wage and cut taxes.
"The millionaires and billionaires who choose to invest in Australia are actually those who most help the poor and our young," she said. "This secret needs to be spread widely."
And now it's out there.

Thank you, rich people. We're not worthy.

On one hand, I agree with her. If you want something out of life, don't be jealous of others, go after what you want and get it.

On the other hand, she assumes everyone wants money. This is where I disagree with her, money doesn't equal success. There's a lot of folks who find richness in life without chasing money. In some ways, having that much money can be a burden. She sounds miserable, I bet most folks are happier than her anyways.

You can't make this shit up.

Competitive Eating In 1986, she won the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, New York, but lost in the subsequent year. In March of 1992, Gina Rinehart set the Guinness World Record for most corn dogs consumed in a 10 minute time frame at 72, and later that year, she won a prawn eating contest in Sydney by consuming 6.2 kilograms of prawns within the allotted 15 minutes. She retired from the competitive eating arena to be with her family after setting her record. It has been long rumored that she plans to regain the title at Coney Island in 2013.

And BTW I do agree with her concerning climate change, however her reasons are in her own interests.

Funny, but it appears to be fake. The entry is under "personal wealth"...doesn't make sense in that subsection. There's an extra space above the heading. Also, no citations...something like that would most definitely have to be cited. Also, it was added today.

How many prawns is that? 6.2 kilograms? Sounds like a lot. I've never heard of a prawn eating contest, that's something new.

She seems like a grumpy ol' gal with a hearty appetite, I believe she'd do well in that contest. I guess, with an appetite like that, you'd better have some money to back it. It's like a bankster asking for a bonus without a bailout. You can't feed the beast that much without a little help.

From what Ive heard bhp is cutting back on Olympic Dam which isnt going to be developed now, thats uranium .OZ has been doing well because of China but china has to flatten out a bit ,and it seems their banks are as bad as everyones.

Mining slowdown in Australia will cause problems as thats all its been prospering from the last few years and it looks to be the time to cut back in mining at the moment.

OZ dollar sinks in this case but holding g/s can protect here.

Forgive my ignorance but why is what she said upsetting?

If you want more money you SHOULD work harder. Also it is the socialist/collectivist govt that makes people poor ( or nearly impossible to climb out of)

The richest people I know work the hardest/longest/most hours and have the most responsibility. The poorest people I know work part time and have zero responsibility. And the middle class folks I know have one or the other, they work hard but don't have much responsibility (oil and gas drilling/coal mining) or they have a lot of responsibility but don't have the hardest jobs around (IT folks/ middle managers)

Right...but working hard is just the first step. Once you work hard and have extra money ( that the government doesnt steal) then comes the investment part (either your business or someone else's). Obviously you will not save 10 billion just by working, but working hard is the first step to getting out of poverty. You can become "not poor" on hard work alone.

I get that SHE didn't get rich from hard work but that doesn't mean it isn't a way out of poverty.

Gina's father Lang worked hard in a harsh environment, and as his only child she followed his footsteps. The opportunity for wealth from the mineral resources of Western Australia provided the basis... but both dedicated their life to expanding their resources. Name calling and insults re her weight is hardly appropriate nor relevant.

Meh. This is the old liberalism vs conservatism debate, and what's right goes back and forth between the two in cycles. One side says work harder and you'll be better off. This is true. The other side says maybe there's some importance to quality of life instead of just putting your nose to the grindstone your entire life. Also true.

I don't accept blanket statements on either side. We've all seen situations where one or the other is right, and other times where it's wrong.

"The evidence is inarguable that Australia is becoming too expensive and too uncompetitive to do export-oriented business," Rinehart said at the Sydney Mining Club. "Africans want to work, and its workers are willing to work for less than $2 per day. Such statistics make me worry for this country's future."

I once saw a PBS Frontline program, years ago about wealthy people in Mexico. They interviewed a Mexican billionaire who lived in Monterey, and had his own private zoo with all kinds of exotic animals. And they asked him if he had any advice for people who wanted to get rich. He said: 'Work hard, and always be on time and save your money.'

It made perfect sense to me. If I was a rich person, that is the advice I would give to people. It wouldn't be smart to tell them to 'lie, cheat, and steal' if they wanted to get rich.

I'm pretty sure that Gina Rinehart's parents taught her just that little bit of common sense. I also think the people who amassed the fortune that Gina inherited probably did work hard for it, and got a lot of help from the government and a host of bankers and lawyers. Hard work is for slaves--not the masters. Anyone who believes Gina or any other wealthy person about hard work is wearing invisible chains.

There is some truth to what she said. You will almost always be better off if you work hard, don't waste your earnings and invest wisely whether it be in a business or more conventional investment.

On the other hand, people that follow that formula are almost never ever going to end up filthy rich. Maybe net worth in the 10 million range but not in the billions. To get to the billion range you have to be super smart, willing to take huge risks and gambles which often break you and well connected unless you inherit your wealth. Either that or you need to be a crook.

Some people are just super lucky. I know a person who came up with one invention 20 years ago and has been riding that success since then. From what I can tell he has no business sense, or ability to advertise or promote his product and his business seems to be on the decline. He hasn't come up with any major new products or innovations since that original idea and is getting frustrated that everything isn't falling in his lap. Things were easy in the beginning but he cannot replicate his original success. This is a case of someone who basically won the life lotto and just got lucky. How many other people invent something or start a business and it goes nowhere. If he doesn't get his act together I could see him being broke in another 5-10 years.

So that is my perspective on it. I am not saying not to work hard and start businesses but people shouldn't expect it to be easy. For someone who inherited great wealth to tell those less fortunate then herself that they should stop being so lazy if they want more money is a little comical.

Assholes. Isn't that why most of us here take what excess flat and put it into metals? Of course most sheep do not even think along those lines. Think most that play the stock markets are looking for their investment to grow, and as you said it is rigged toward the big trading houses, the small investor does not stand a chance.

Every spare flat dollar that comes my way gets converted into metal, and so far it has been all good, can not argue with a 100-200% return on my investment.(less now % wise) But that was not the intention, conserving value\wealth, was.

I look at the stock market as said above this post, it is rigged by the big players for the big players. Sure spot on metals go up and down, but who buys and holds metal to make a quick buck, some do, nothing wrong with that. But as an over all guarantee that the wealth\value of the metals that one holds does hold or rises in value over the long run IMO can not be beat.

As far as the o/p goes , that woman inherited the majority of her wealth, nothing wrong with that, but she is still ugly inside and out. One can be ugly by ones act's alone, regardless of the physical.
