OLD BRIDGE — An ex-marine fatally shot two co-workers at a Route 9 supermarket in Old Bridge, then turned the gun on himself, the mayor said.
Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry said the shooting occurred at the Pathmark around 4:30 a.m. today.
He said the male and female victims who were killed this morning were young, although he did not have an exact age for them. They were both from Old Bridge and both worked at the Pathmark, which was closed when the shooting occurred, the mayor said.
He said the ex-marine, also an Old Bridge resident, had worked at the store for about two weeks. He left the store this morning, and then returned a short time later, dressed in camouflage and armed with an AK-47 and an automatic pistol, the mayor said.
The ex-marine’s fatal wound was self-inflicted, said Henry.
The mayor said his thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. He said the call he received early this morning from police, alerting him to the incident was the worst a mayor can receive.
He said police are now in the process of notifying the families of the victims.
A nearby park-and-ride was closed for a period of time this morning.
