Reg Mead and Richard Miles, two English metal detector enthusiasts, have discovered a trove of approximately 50,000 coins dating back to the Iron Age (2,000 years ago). The discovery comes after 30 years of looking for the stash, a hunt that began after a woman told the duo her father came across coins in the field many years earlier, reports The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4396405/Metal-detector-buffs-strike-gold-with-Iron-Age-hedge-fund.html).

Officials estimate that the coins, which weigh three quarters of a ton, are worth around 10 million British Pounds, or $15.6 million.

As a fellow metal detector enthusiast, I cannot fathom how incredible it would be to unearth over $15 million in buried gold. But the thing is, if I ever found anything like that, you'd never hear about it.

i wonder if they used a metal detector.

metal detectors remind me of what Charles Revson said about cosmetics, when interviewed about Revlon, the company he founded.

he philosophized that what he was really selling was 'Hope', the hope perhaps that accompanies the ritual practice of applying make-up.

well, it seems like for a LOT of metal detector purchasers, they are buying the detector sometimes because they HOPE they'll find something.

of course, as the cache of coins in Jersey shows, sometimes Hope (& hard work) are rewarded.

it sounds interesting, like the story of the recovery of the tons of gold from the SS Central America, as documented in "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea".
