Strong 7.9 quake hits Costa Rica, tsunami warning issued


(Reuters) - A strong 7.9 earthquake rocked Costa Rica on Wednesday, rattling buildings and cutting power in some areas of the capital of San Jose, a Reuters correspondent and the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit close to Samara, a coastal area on the Pacific some 151 kms (94 miles) from the capital city.

A Caribbean-wide tsunami watch is in effect, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Alright here, was a long 45 seconds though. When they hit the beach they ain't so bad up here in the mountains, though it was probably the longest & forceful I've ever felt. The one a few years back was a shaker, this one was a heavy roller... Gonzo's here in Costa Rica, I had thunk he was pick'n with my homies in Kentucky?

Good to hear you OK, any damages? Aftershocks? They had a hospital's walls fall of on a couple rooms down by the beach, is all. I'm in a 4 story apt. was thinking of slinging myself out on the power lines out front if it went down. No aftershocks yet.

Things are quite a bit different in the mountainous regions of CR, a good rain causes mud/mountain slides and even a slight EQ can cause the same. If you mix the two it's a crappy combination if you need or want to go somewhere, it can take days to clear the passes and it's still dangerous as hell! It's nothing to see a several ton boulder cross in front of your path...it will either sober you up or reaching for another.

That will only happen if they fail to comply with International Law, or in the case of Costa Rica at least pretend and try to really hard. :)
