was going to post this in anecdotal evidence, but thought i'd do a stand alone for visibility.

since monday i have had:

a) my brother in law, who i'm not too close with (we get along fine, just no common interests + he's halfway across the country) call me and grill me in depth about how to buy.

b) a retired millionaire buddy of mine call me. he wants to liquidate 250k of stock and buy silver. wanted to know how.

c) a guy i've fished with in leauge for 6 years call me and want to know where + how he could buy silver.

hmmmm. in the past, these guys have always ribbed me about it, now suddenly...they are buying.

fwiw.

at least you have a few that are waking up ... and also this is good for the price of silver . then more we take from there hands the more control we may have

thing is, i gave up trying to wake them all up at least 3 years ago. just goes to show that people remember i guess. all of them were quite emphatic that "they were going to do something by next week." $35 ag and QEinfinity must be waking people up or something.

From a societal standpoint, this in encouraging that people one by one are finally starting to wake up. I think each of us has a different pain threshold and sense of awareness. Many have watched their pensions and savings get savaged with no end in sight and finally realized that to not react is a financial death sentence. If you haven't already Chad, I would tell them that they shouldn't buy silver until they fully understand the fundamentals and the nature of the white metal vis-a-vis volatlity. While you obviously recommend silver investment, they need to purchase it as informed investors, not merely on the recommendation of the friend. They need to understand that the buying of silver is their decision, not yours. This way they are not whining at you when silver corrects down to $32. Also, the only people who sold silver during this most recent consolidation were professional traders and amatuers who bought silver without a full understanding of the fundamentals and panicked. These latter folk missed out on this most recent spectacular run. As you well know, silver corrections can be excruciating. Only a full knowledge of the silver story can carry one through the dark periods and allow him to hold on for the long term.

Chad- you planted the seed 3 years ago. The soil was fertile for growth of these ideas, and finally a bud has sprouted. Hopefully, the field will be maintained, fertilized, etc.

I remember I told a friend back around 2000 that gold was cheap (~$300/ozt.). I told him gold could see $1000/ozt. He bought a few ounces. I thought, great, good for him. Later I found out that when the price hit ~$450 he panic sold it! But in any case, he rebought again, and has been actively stacking on a small, but not insignificant scale since then.

If your friends new that my average for my few little oz of silver is of $5.16 they would shoot themselves.....hummmmm

On top of mamboni's advise, I'd advise them to split their purchase into at least three transactions over time. That will soften the blow of any pullback. Recommend that they buy now at $35, then buy again after some fixed amount of time (maybe 90 days; just pick some fixed period that's at least 45 days) or at a 10% pullback, whichever comes first. And then repeat that rule a second time.

Now, the downside is that they may have to pay a higher price. But psychologically, if you have to buy at $35, $38, and $41, you're really not feeling so bad as if you were to go all in at $35 and have to watch the price languish at $30.

BTW, chad, your anecdote would also be appropriate for the Notice Any Awakening? (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?58060-Notice-any-awakening&highlight=awakening) thread!

Yeah but you got most of your silver during the great Nevada silver rush of 1858 :D

i think the main reason they've never bought is that i always preach about how the second you buy "it'l drop $10 an ounce." that's why i'm so surprised buy it. they've always been really, really scared of it, but now, the possibility of qe3's effects are scaring them even more. i'll give them the big gs-us standard speech this weekend again, and thanks for all of the tips, i am forwarding them to them.

I went to a local coin shop this week with a first time buyer (at his request) that recently "woke up". He bought 6,000 in silver bars and rounds.
He asked me to accompany him since he wasn't sure of what to get how much, etc. While I was there I asked about business, more buyers than sellers for sure.
I asked if they had any Gold sovereigns (my fav gold coin) and they said they sold "IT" the other day. "IT" as in one, ONLY one. This is a place that always had many at any given time you would walk in.

FYI: The video that woke him up was one called > The end of the road. I never even heard of it.

lol, I didn't realize how desensitized I've become. At this point I'll be happy if at the end of the day I've got at least 60% value of everything I've saved at any given point in the future.

Be sure and tell them to TAKE PHYSICAL DELIVERY and to KEEP THEIR TRAPS SHUT. Buying without a paper trail is good, too.

When silver was trading in the $26-$27 range, there was not much business (buying or selling) going on at the LCS's in my area. Since silver rallied from the $26-$27 range, the local demand for physical silver has picked up to the point where it is very hard for them to keep it in stock. Even if/when spot silver takes another dive down, then there will also drive local demand but not as much as right now when it is going up. I will also have that, at this point, there are more buyers of silver than sellers. There are 6 LCS's in my area and most of them (as of last week) were cleaned out.

During the coin shows that I attended so far this year, there has also been some pickup in silver (and gold) buying. I suspect that more people will "wake up" and buy more PM's. If silver keeps going up from here, then that will also attract more buying IMO.

they've always been really, really scared of it, but now, the possibility of qe3's effects are scaring them even more.Whenever I talk investments with people, I use the powerful words "paper assets". When mass corruption on Wall Street, in media and government is all around them, what can be more scary than paper assets?

"Paper assets" really gets them thinking.

Yes I think his investment is in physical paper, not paper representing a physical investment, one is an asset for asses, coming to think of it both of them are! ;D

yes & no.

under the circumstances, it sounds like some of them are 'chasing momentum', i.e. buying silver because "it seems to be going up".

just out of curiosity - did any of the people who called say anything like, "the US $ is toast ?" - anything to indicate understanding of long-term fundamentals, willingness to hold silver purchased @$35 if paper price drops to $25, etc. ?

Just think of the irony; rather than buying physical paper, you can buy a paper representation of paper. I guess that would be like buying stock in Kimberly-Clark or something.

all of them wnated to buy because there perceive the dollar as losing value + silver being something that could "save their money." gold was too expensive for all of them.

That's awesome chad !! Feel good about yourself for waking people up ! I recently had a lady (who is a bigtime city slicker !! ) ask me questions about
gardening, farming AND she wants to cash in a 100K retirement account. I was soo shocked and so happy that over the years people did actually hear
me when I thought nobody was listening.
